An episode in which not a lot happens but I have a look at the first lot of products to have arrived for my campervan conversion (being tinted side windows, a can of WD40 degreaser and some self-adhesive sound-deadening mats).
I then ponder what it takes to re-register a panel van as a camper van with the DVLA and consider the issue of insurance.
If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

Got to love the insurances ^^ you are lucky to live in UK with your campervan project. Cars and anything with motors is unbelievably expensive here in DK. You need to pay registration fees when buying a new car of the same amount the car costs. It is ridiculous. If you need to replace the engine of the car, the car needs again a new registration.... they are absolutely crazy... maybe this is why there are so many rust buckets on the roads....🤔

Another great video David. I’m not sure if I’m too late, but a good tip would be to soak the tubes of window adhesive in hot water before you start. When I did my windows, I needed a bionic grip to squeeze the thick gunge out of the tubes, but when you heat the tubes up, it comes out much easier. Also, when you come to insure your van next year, A-plan do a “modified commercial van policy,” that will cover your motorhome for commercial use as well.
@Vandemonium

Thanks; useful to know. I haven't done the windows yet, it's been too cold for the adhesive (and doesn't look like it's getting any better)

Hi... Enjoying your new blogs. As regards your no claims bonus the Insurance people are very clever you cannot use your no claims on your car for your van, but if your where to claim on your van it will effect your claims on your car and vice versa. I had this when my car was stolen and my motorcycle insurance doubled the following year.

I customized a 1977 Dodge Tradesman 100 van a number of years ago. I used the aluminized bubble wrap as wall insulation at the time. It worked well keeping the noise down. As far as warmth there were a couple issues, The front heater Dodge used really wasn't strong enough to heat the entire van unless it sat parked and running for about an hour. Air movement in the van was surprising, I would drive about 12 miles to New London Ct, stop at a traffic light and you could feel the cold air from the back of the van rush forward and the warm air disappear up and back. The only other issue I had with the van was winter. You need to create a vapor barrier in the roof. I used stick on foam insulation and then covered the roof with cut sheets of linoleum.Finished it looked great accented the wall carpeting. I was riding around in Providence Rhode Island one night in a winter storm. The heat was on but the snow was building up on the roof. Then my third passenger (riding in the back) started complaining of rain. Seems snow on a roof and heat inside creates ceiling condensation..ie "Hey !!! It's Raining in Here!!!"

A great video once again. The sound dampening is nice, it will provide a bit of a proof against condensation between the cold sheet metal and the warmer insulation, that is good. The windows you bought are probably not insulated. You should think about getting/making good insulating drapes for them. Two layers of nonwoven cloth work wonders in experience. We have a similar curtain between the living area and the cab. It was nice and toasty inside, I had to remove ice from the window`s insides at times.

I'm sure there will be. Once you cut a hole in that entirely good van metal and insert the gasket and prep the area, you will be ready to apply the glue. That could get sticky, and if you drop that pane, you'd be shattered. Yes, plenty of room to have 'pun' with language.

Hi there, the wiring in the back is for towbar connections. The small cables go to the can bus control and the thick red wire goes directly to the battery compartment. Under the live battery connection there is a large " bus bar". The end of the red cable should be floating around in there somewhere. That's if it's the same as my Citroen of course. Keep up the good work, I'll be starting mine when the weather gets better.
@Vandemonium
@Vandemonium 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. Thanks for this. I'm very interested in this information but a bit confused. I saw (on the nearside) a multi-pin connector at the back corner with lots of thin wires in it but no sign of any thick red wire (and certainly I hope it's not floating if it's connected to the battery +ve!). It should be identical to your Citroen if they're the same era (mine's 2013)
@richardbrown9529
@richardbrown9529 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there the multi pin connecter is to join in for tow bar wiring. Try the towbar wiring diagram on pf jones website. If your not fitting a towbar ( as I have) you can just stash the wires complete with the plug out of the way. On the Citroen version they're just left loose behind the panel anyway. There should also be a thick cable (mines red) on its own in a separate plug. This is a battery fed aux live, apparently for things like a hoist ect. It's a 30a supply so may come in useful. I hope this helps. Cheers for now ,Richard
@richardbrown9529
@richardbrown9529 6 жыл бұрын
If you've no thick wire don't worry about it but if you find one lurking about the other end isn't connected it's just there hanging about in the battery box with a fuse terminal on the end ready to connect to the live bus bar. Hope this clears things up a bit. Cheers
@Vandemonium
@Vandemonium 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Richard. Thank you for that detailed reply. Are we both talking about the same thing though, about half way up the nearside upright corner "strut", behind where the wheel wrench is hung? I'm not planning on a towbar but as you say the 30A supply wire could come in handy so I'd like to pin this down. Mind you, I've smothered it all in loft insulation now!
@richardbrown9529
@richardbrown9529 6 жыл бұрын
The easiest way to tell if you have the 30a supply is to check in the battery compartment. If it's the same as mine you need to disconnect the battery (neg first ) and lift the pos terminal upwards. This should reveal a bar with a row of male spade terminals on it. Somewhere in there possibly connected to one of the terminals should be the 30a supply if it's there that's great it just needs a large size fuse. If it's no where to be seen then at least you've found where you can take a direct supply from your battery. Just need to remember it's not part of the really annoying energy save mode so flat battery a possibility I just need to say, mines a Citroen so it may all be different so for you project I might be blathering on for nothing. Sometimes with these multi brand efforts it's only the shell that's the same and nothing else much, not just a "badging" exercise. Good look with your project I'll keep watching with interest. Roll on the warm weather Cheers

Hi David. Really pulling for you to find or be given some garage space so your windows can go in. Maybe an exchange of a weekend or day trip in spring on the narrowboat with you at the helm of course for use of a garage to fit the windows. You'll come up with something. Here in the states it's usually the opposite with the registration and insurance. Cheaper to keep it classified as a van. Funny old world. Onward and upward.😉

Excellent stuff. I also watch your boat vlogs. There is great sense in having a livaboard boat and a small camper rather than a car. I am currently doing a kitchen (galley) rebuild on my boat and have decided to go for a diesel cooker which also doubles as a heater with an air blower (Wallas) as I really don't like using gas for safety reasons - also means reducing the different types of fuel needed. I noticed that the DVLA screenshot stated that you had to have a fixed cooker which was either gas or electric. Disallowing a diesel cooker would be a show-stopper for me if I get rid of the car and convert a van. I look forward to seeing how you get on.
@Vandemonium
@Vandemonium 6 жыл бұрын
I hadn't noticed the DVLA requirement for gas/electric! Interesting. Might be worth querying with them. I think the only trouble with the diesel stoves is that they takes ages to heat up. Do you watch HughTube - he installed a diesel stove and did some experiments with it.

If you don't tell them they won't know :) basically they just want to know it's a motorhome/camper and looks like one - at one point they became obsessive about the "looks like one" but are now more rational - people also obsess about the bed being at least 6ft, but they don't measure it. Have a look at some of the example letters/photos people have posted on the web.

Does it help you out when we"like" your vlogs ? I occasionally forget to. You mentioned KZbin slow in paying, that's why I ask. Also , I've noticed a few other channels have mentioned the same thing about not getting paid. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
@Vandemonium
@Vandemonium 6 жыл бұрын
It helps KZbin to know the video is liked and therefore they are more likely to promote it. It doesn't make a difference as regards money. And yes, KZbin are being very tardy about enabling monetisation on the channel (not the individual videos - the entire channel is awaiting their approval!). Merry Christmas.

I did the same for T5 when I had it, one thing you said which wasn't right, the table can be removable (as part of the list of minimum features) plus if it wasn't you wouldn't be able to have a bed because the table would be in the way...
@Vandemonium
@Vandemonium 7 жыл бұрын
We're both right - the table base must be fixed into the body of the van even if the flat part of the table itself can be removed.

Like here in Germany, registered as panel van, you can't take over you percentage from the car insurance, you will start on novice-driver-level... Fortunately, the standing height regulation has fallen, but i heard rumours that the m² of the floor can decide if your converted van would be registered as camper... Yes the weather keeps me mostly from starting my Tourneo conversion, too wet, too cold...hope you will find a heated place for cheap to glue in your shiny windows! They are the standard ones from toyota? Why no insulated campervan windows? Have fun& thx for the vid!
@Vandemonium
@Vandemonium 7 жыл бұрын
Not Toyota windows, they're from a camper specialist. Most of the self-converted vans here seem to use this type of bonded window; only when you go up a size to Ducatos and large Transits do people spend the money on "campervan" windows.

Might the cutting of apertures to accommodate windows compromise the structural integrity of the body and weaken it? As always I enjoy your vlogs, whether on land, water or - very occasionally - in the air. Go well.
@Vandemonium

No; it's a very common practice and there are versions of the van available from Toyota that already have windows in place. Plus I'm only putting windows in the doors, not the actual van side. Cheers.

The structural integrity of the roof is maintained by the front, center and rear interior corner pillars. The sheet metal merely keeps the weather out.

Hey, great Video as always. Just curious, why didn't go for regular Caravan / motorhome windows? You know, the ones that open upwards. Just thinking because i wished i had done that since they are usually better insulated an can be opened during rain.
@Vandemonium
@Vandemonium 7 жыл бұрын
I think they're more expensive but also most of the compact campervans I've seen (eg VWs etc) have these bonded ones. The caravan ones only seem to be used on bigger vans like Ducatos etc

You didn’t mention VAT. I understand that you are required to pay this once you add windows to the loadspace as this converts the vehicle from commercial to private. Is this true please?

VAT is irrelevant. The van was privately owned from the outset when I bought it (used)

Hi David. Are you sure you've got the correct seals to go around the window openings? I can't understand at present how you're going to glue the windows and make a watertight seal. Shouldn't the glass fit within the seals?

The biggest reason there is a difference in insuring a van versus a camper, or motor caravan is "risk". As a commercial or delivery van, there is an assumed increased risk, due to it being used daily and possibly by people who are not the registered owner. The motor caravan is assumed to be lower risk as it may be driven occasionally and mostly by the registered owner. Decided to come check this channel out from Cruising the Cut. You have pleasing way as a presenter.

They're called "Shield Total Insurance" but beware if you call their 0800 number - it's actually on the Isle of Mann or something and Virgin Mobile charged me a premium rate £14 for 15 minutes!! (they refunded it after I complained, but apparently the 0800 number "only has 10 digits instead of 11" and somehow I was supposed to know that meant it's not a UK freephone!!
