Omg thank you for this!!!! IM EXT is one of the tanks I’ve been looking into. Super excited to watch these two tanks develop!!! Thanks for the great content!!!
@robdave15 жыл бұрын
Instead of painting, you could take it all to be professionally powdercoated, would probably be cheaper and just as durable
@Mebeknob5 жыл бұрын
robdave1 since they are aluminum I’d say get them anodized
@muffemod5 жыл бұрын
anodizing fades over time with handling
@Mebeknob5 жыл бұрын
You are correct it can be rubbed off since it only goes a few thou into the surface. But you have to ask... they are currently anodized... so if the manufacturer anodized them, it might be a good choice. But after looking at the comments plasti dip might be a cool idea.

I've painted metal before with rustoleum spray paint. Works really well and holds up against the salt too. You can get it in a huge variety of colours, even textured stone, and hammered copper. Gloss or satin ( matte) are in most colours. Rustoleum is a USA brand too so should be cheap there. You don't even have to sand it, because the rustoleum is designed with paint molecules that cling into the material it is sprayed onto, plus it has primer in it. Just give it a quick wipe down with an alcohol wipe.

sand it, use white primer, then a white top coat. Get an HPLV sprayer and a regulator from harbor freight, to get the mat finish use a mat clear coat. Duplicolor automotive paints work really well on metal.

Rad, congrats on the new tanks! I really like the EXT systems, I have the 50 gallon here in the office and having that external overflow is nice for switching out sumps or plumbing to a central sump or just working on the plumbing after its full. No clue how to paint metal....but I would say anodize it with Camo....LOL. Stoked to see what you can do with a spinning tank, I am not too keen with fluid dynamics but it will be cool to see how the movement affects everything in the tank. Keep it up buddy! -Robert @ MD

I see several people have suggested Rustoleum. I have to agree. I have used it on old tractor parts that have to endure the weather, and can state that it adheres and works well to protect metal. I have no idea how aluminum holds up in salty conditions, but the extra protection should extend the life. My second choice would be epoxy paint. Have fun!!!

Hey this question is off the beaten path but I saw you at interzoo on the waterbox channel...what are your thoughts on those tanks particularly the the 170.4/5 I am in the market for a tank. I was looking at the nuvo int 100 but I need a white tank stand.
@willhowell51045 жыл бұрын
wet sand the stands with super fine grit sandpaper till its dull looking and sand the corners well then spray paint them with metal spray paint. and let them cure for about 24 hours in between coats then when theirs enough coats let the stand sit for 48 hours.

Is the overflow box sticking out past the rest of the back or is it flush with the back of the tank?

You will definitely want to use spray primer first if you are trying to cover black with white. You can even go with a white primer if you want, it leaves a matte finish but you don't want to leave it bare as primer attracts stains and dirt terribly. Then paint with your preference but it's hard to beat the rattle cans for projects like this. I would not bother with a sprayer setup unless you plan to cover a huge area with paint (like walls and ceilings), especially if you don't have all the peripheral equipment already like compressors and tanks. You can also get great results with careful roller and brushwork. I use 2-part epoxy paint regularly for the fish room. Its really easy to work with, rolls on like butter, and is super durable, but it is a little pricey.

I work at a body shop scuff it with red scuff pad go to a paint store ask them they know what they are and use them to scuff the black till there is no more shine then paint then with a nice flat white. Just do spray paint a spray system will be a big chunk of change

If you looking for quick and easy I would go with a rattle can but be sure to degrease and profile before painting. The key to a good paint job is all in the prep work! And if you get a round cylinder tank on that turntable that would be cool or water proof it and stick it in the tank?... maybe spinning coral reef?!?
Ugh this is SO exciting and I haven’t even watched it yet!!
@edgidner665 жыл бұрын
Changing from black to white is going to be a pia. I would scuff the black paint with a scotch bright pad then use a light colored filler primer. The white top coat should tell you what grit you need to sand the primer to get a nice finish. Because the APS is aluminum and I am sure the paint is highly sealed it will take some elbow grease to get anything to adhere to it. Alternatively you could try rolling on some of the white Flex Seal and crossing your fingers.
@MW-ut3dk5 жыл бұрын
You don’t need to drill another hole for the hybrid return/closed loop-just put a tee onto the outlet of the vectra, attach a gate valve to the pipe going straight to the tank so you can adjust the flow on that pipe, and go up and over the sump wall back to the tank as your closed loop pipe.

Use Rustoleum white. Rustoleum is made for metal, and weather/waterproof. They have both cans of paint, or spray paint. Might need a few coats painting on black. But I am no expert, so I would hate for it to go wrong. lol
@masiehmitra82735 жыл бұрын
you could spraypaint them with plastidip. That way the stands will remain in good original state. And if you ever want to sell or change it back to black, you could easily peel the color off it. sanding for a new coat of color might damage and create spots fo rust

When you paint make sure you use a primer. Spray paint will be ok. Just make sure you let it breathe/cure after you are done painting. It may be difficult to find matte white spray paint though. That would be the easiest route.

You can definitely do white automotive paint. An air gun for the paint. Lightly sand and scuff the metal then apply coats until finished. Powder coating would be a much better looking and more durable finish though.

Hey Jake, looking great! I'm almost uploading my first channel video, and my whole system will be white. I used a turbine FUJI mini-mite 3 sprayer for Rustoleum satin white enamel (thin with 10% acetone), works killer on metal (and lots of other things too). I painted an entire metal spiral staircase kit with it. They have the same Rustoleum satin white enamel in spray cans too (one of the reason I chose it), which makes touch up easy. Satin still looks pretty flat (I hate glossy too), but is MUCH easier to clean/wipe off than flat. You can also just grab a bunch of spray cans and skip the sprayer. If the stands are painted aluminum, you might be able to just give them 2-3 coats without primer, maybe test the back of the stand first. But, beyond all that - LOVE THE HAMMOCK! Totally awesome. Living the dream! : )

Jake, the IM tanks are a hit. Very sleek looking. You can use a matte primer & paint and it’ll adhere well.

Im a pro painter. All I would do is scuff it with a RED 3M SCOTCH BRITE PAD , then blow it all off. Wipe down with wax and grease remover. Tack rag it all, then paint with a single stage white paint. Paint gun obviously would be best, just a cheapo from Walmart will do. Use rustoleum paint, $30 gal. Reduce it some probably, read the can.

If you sand through to the metal you need to use a self etching primer before you paint the color as I'm assuming those are aluminum stands if its steel you can just use a regular sanding primer but since it'll be around salt water I would use an epoxy primer if its steel then sand re prime any spots you cut through to metal again, sand with 320 prior to primer and atleast 400 or finer pre paint if you want a smooth finish and clean with a degreasing solvent before priming and painting the base coat, if your going to use a clear coat as well no need to clean after the base coat unless you sand out a run or something (make sure its completely dry if you do sand the base), just keep the base coat clean no oil no bare hand touching lol. If you are going to use a spray gun same prep applies just adjust the spray pattern on some cardboard or paper to be about the size of the tubing, first you adjust the fan size then adjust the air. you want it to basically look like its misting on not spraying little blotches, the smaller the spray pattern (fan) the less air you need typically. If you want to do it fast you could just use a red scuff pad (any paint store should have some auto parts stores as well) clean it spray a primer SEALER and the spray the color right after it flashes, it'll be more textured this way though not as smooth as the previous ways. Just do light multiple coats no matter which route you choose and make sure the products your using are compatible with one another, that and be clean is the main things. Good luck let me know if I need to clarify anything this is quite a long post lmao
@Bluejillo5 жыл бұрын
Just to add, when I used to paint cars we would use lacquer thinner to wipe down the panels making sure any body oils, etc., were cleaned off and then just before painting we would use a tack rag (sticky cheese cloth) to wipe the panels again to make sure there wasn't any dust that settled on them. If you end up using lacquer thinner, I would test a small spot to make sure it doesn't remove the existing paint before doing this though. I'm sure it's probably a bit different than automotive paint.
@bsmbB5 жыл бұрын
Bluejillo lacquer thinner doesn't remove everything ime and with a degreasing solvent you can see all the oil rise to the surface and you can see if you need to clean more. But +1 on the tack rag. Also I forgot if you are using a spray gun make sure you use a pre filter to get the water out of the compressed air. I also used to paint cars
@moonrockreefery5 жыл бұрын
You should consider using metal for the stands. Idk if you’ve seen the stand FishOfHex has on his 300. I spent $90 on metal from a local distributor. Don’t buy at lowes or home depot because its a-lot more $$. The distributor only had 30 foot lengths of square pipe and they kindly cut it into 10ft lengths for free. Then I found a friend on social media who had a welder and bought him a 30pack of beer to come over, hang out and weld me a stand. I got a quart of the rustoleum paint and put it on thick with a roller. No problems at all, you spill water on it and you just wipe it off. It will hold massive weight, look good, easy to clean and last a life time. Don’t have to worry about rust and it was actually pretty light. Since the square pipe is hollow on the inside you can drill holes into it and use it for cable management. You just have to fish the cables through with a fish line and you don’t see a ton of cables laying around.
