I think the potential to overlay and process additional image on the groundstaion versus an analog OSD is one of the biggest, least-talked about benefits of digital. Current place in the race, an automated lap-time system, a small minimap overlay to show you the next turn coming up, etc. There's so much potential to expand on this system, and I think your coverage and editorial at the end is so much more representative of the future, more so than the very traditional "it looks better but it's kind of laggy" review.

Great video Paul. I was wondering though, how do you make those gates. Looks like pvc pipes and some pool noodles but how do you make them stay up like that? I'm looking to make some cheap simple gates just like what you have.

Hey Bulbufet you should take a look at "hyperthin cables." Used them with the DJI Z15 Gh4 in order to bypass using lightbridge when the connex was first released. The connex is a Great AP product but it needs more work as you mentioned before it can hit the market as a zero latency racing feed option

i don't really know anything about digital systems, but it seems the thing thats good about them is the buffer and check signals and correct errors against a known signal, so if you remove this buffering and checking you lose whats good about them. ps. has nobody thought to add a flipper like robot wars, for when you land upside down?

now this makes me wonder why everybody is excited about overlaying information onto the image on the groundstation when it is actually possible with analog video. One could just use the telemetry of the radio link to transmit the information like voltage and then let a groundstation osd overlay them. Same with race positions, it would need to be done with an independant system anyway, that somehow figures out which quad is where on the track. Put that osd module somewhere between your grounstation and your goggles and youre done...

You should totally check out HDMI ribbon cables, they would clean up your rig in a big way and get some of that weight off of you goggles.

Hi, first thing i notice here: be careful not to get unneccesary latency with routing hdmi thru dvr and then to the goggles. At least you should make a letncy test with and without dvr.... now i will continue watching :)

I've done both. They feel the same. I'm 99% sure the DVR just splits it inside, and sends output from HDMI into the DVR device and passes through the output straight to me. But.. if that's not the case, I also have a splitter that I've tested with. Both feel pretty much the same.

ok good to know. guess hdmi is really just passed thru while on my analog dvr it got a considerable ammount of latency. interesting aspects covered here. I guess connex cant win with just the video quality (which isnt that much better if you want low latency). good to know where the hobby is gonna head towards. DJI with occusync (on the mavic) also decreased the latency a bit while delivering REALLY good and crisp 720p or 1080p live video, totally smooth, no breakups... massive range...
