I do not have Neem oil for sale here. I use alcohol and I use it pure because my climate is cool so it does not burn succulents, cactus or even orchids. If I mix it with water it will not evaporate as fast in my cooler temperatures. The alcohol works on mealies and scale because it dissecates their bodies by evaporating action. Very good vídeo, Ana. And very useful too.Thanks for showing my name channel on the screen. Happy coming week ❤️

@@CactusCaffeine Using 70% isopropanol on the cacti is not a good idea for most of us. It really weakens the plant's waxy membranes, and makes spider mite infestations much more likely. I speak from sad experience... I think using Ana's 33% alcohol solution with the couple drops of soap is much safer. I'm going to try that.

I caught a Mealy bug and put it into a tray to see how fast they move... They move as quick as Ants!! Solves the problem of why they suddenly appear so quickly on other plants... have been final checking my Cactus and a few had them on their body (ones still in their nursery pots still waiting for repotting🙄) so I submerged every infected one into a water bath of Cinnamon Oil and a drop of dish washing soap and a final rinse under running water then dried the roots with towel and repotted into dry mix 😆 great video Ana and very informative 👍🏻☺️🌵

I never noticed that. When I see a mealy, I squish them right away! 😁 I haven’t tried cinnamon oil. But I use cinnamon powder a lot. Does it kill a bug on contact?
@CactusCove4 жыл бұрын
@@CactusCaffeine I love cinnamon powder too 👌🏻 Ceylon Cinnamon powder is more potent and a purer form which is what I use 🤫... The Cinnamon Oil is known as a "hot" oil so you cannot use it straight onto Plants leaves/or Cactus body because it will burn the skin. It has to be diluted always to the ratio of 1 percent oil to 99 percent water (you can use dish soap to amalgamate as you did with your neem oil) otherwise just a good shake before every squirt. Yes the oil does kill many bugs/pests and larval stage etc, it's very good. But don't get the oil directly on your skin or breathe it in undiluted, and it must always be diluted before using on any plants 😉 I dispense one drop from my little bottle so it lasts a while. That's what I've researched before I started using Cinnamon Oil and over the Summer that's what I predominantly was using as an alternative to off the counter bug sprays and it worked on the plants I applied it to. I do use it on my new cactus if they have pests and bathe them in the mix for few minutes😂

The one thing that I have found that (gradually) eradicates mealybugs is Bonide's Systemic Granulars Insect Control. I sprinkle some evenly over the top of the soil/dressing which allows a little bit of it to be dissolved and absorbed into the plant each watering cycle. I originally started with only the plants that had visible mealybugs but eventually just added it to all the succulents and cacti to ensure the mealybugs couldn't just migrate from plant to plant. I haven't had any mealybugs for a couple of years now and continue to use the product to maintain that clean state.

Great video Ana!!! I don't have a big problem with mealy bugs. Although I had a small Matucana I bought at the farmers market that when I went to repot it I found root mealies. I washed the roots and repotted. My main problems are cactus scale, citrus scale & spidermites. Im battling spider mites now! They got on one of my lacteas pretty bad. Used the diluted alcohol the first day , then used neem oil the next! A double edged sword! I will hit them again tomorrow with neem oil!! I had scale on my Cereus spiralis, but got them with neem oil & a stiff little paint brush!!! All gone😊👍💥🌟I use quite a bit of neem oil during the year!! I have to keep up with the ants farming scale & mealies anywhere they can!! So I use several bottles a year!!! And with the ants, scale & some mealies sometimes I use heavy concentrations on infestations. My tangerine tree was taken over by ants raising citrus scale last winter. So in the spring I pulled it out of the pot. Washed the roots of ants. Cut the tree half way back so I could reach the inside, and sprayed a very heavy load of neem on it . then the next day I took an old tooth brush , dipping it in the heavy mix and scrubbing the branches& leaves. It worked!!! The tree is growing scale & ant free!!! I was ready to scrap the tree. But I was mad at those ants!! Hahaha!! I won!! Thanks for sharing this great video Ana!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks out to Las Vegas, have a great evening Ana!!!! GET THOSE BUGS!!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!!✌💖🌵🌸🌷🌴🌻🌿🌹🌳

I had one plant that was indoors and it absolutely refused to stop getting those monstrous little ghost berries. I would spray it once a week with alcohol; strong 90% alcohol and they would die and within a week they would come back. This went on for months until one day I went downstairs and I saw mealy bugs back on the plant and I got so pissed that I doused the plant with very very strong bug killer. Needless to say the only thing that was killed was the plant. I was sad because it was a plant that belong to my late mother. I had gone through so many challenges to save it and I had brought it back from the brink so many times. It’s ironic that in the end I was the killer. There is a recipe I saw on KZbin that consists of alcohol, Hydrogen peroxide, peppermint Castile soap, tea tree Castile soap And I think a little water. I am going to try it. I hear that the peroxide basically gets in and cuts their little bodies up which would be a joy to see under a microscope. Good luck in your heroic battle. We mealy warriors must stick together to eradicate the threat. Peace, AM

If you’re forced to go the chemical route there are alternative systemic products that don’t smell. One is by the Bonide brand. It’s their Systemic Granules. They smell a bit but they are applied by digging them into the soil. Once buried a little, you can’t smell them. A product I use when desperate is Bayer Tree and Shrub Systemic. It is liquid, has no smell, and you simply add 1 tablespoon per gallon of water and water your plants with the solution. I feel that a systemic that is applied to the soil is easier and more effective than spraying and a liquid product is better than granules because it is immediately distributed throughout the pot , whereas the granules only gradually release the chemical with each watering. The two alternatives I mentioned contain Imidacloprid. The spray you are currently using contains Acephate, which happens not to be sold retail in California. I have found one application of the Bayer Tree and Shrub product to be very effective and long lasting. Rarely do I need to do any follow up treatments.
