Tag Along for the rest of the week & a little closer look at our 2 man setup using the Kuhns Accumulator and Tie-Grabber.
In four days we put up 5300 small squares!! In between having a mower go down- the baler trying to eat a t-post that got left in the field and was raked up!
I discuss how we stack hay in the barn to get the most quality under roof.

If I learn how to do it, then I will have to do it. lol. Isn't that the story of life. That KN615 is pretty interesting in that it wraps the bales with twine and ties it. That is one beautiful stack of hay in that barn.

Wow, that is a cool accumulator and also I like that grabber that you use in the field that wraps twine around the accumulated bales. That's cool too. I've got a neighbor down here that does custom small square baling (a little bit of it still that is) but his accumulator is quite different, however I think it does the same number as yours does. Also, he just has the regular grabbers that don't put any twine around the bunch of bales. That twine around it is a good idea. The farmer I work for just does big round bales. Back when I was young I bucked many a small square bale of hay, this was before the big round balers were in existence. Aren't you glad technology came up with the accumulator and grabbers so y'all don't have to buck all those bales? Oh my goodness, that's SO much more labor involved in bucking them by hand.

If we didn’t have the accumulation system. There’d be no way that Just Jason and I could do nearly 30k in small square bales each year ... we made the change to the Big Square in 2020 - we sell primarily to Equine people. And going that route has made life easier on our own farm too.

Oh, another side note. I don't blame not wanting to take that CDL test. So far thankfully, since Carl (the farmer I work part time for) doesn't haul grain in his 18 wheelers for anyone but himself and it is strictly farm use, we don't have to get a CDL. Yea!!!!!!!!!!! But, I do LOVE driving that Freightliner and 33 foot grain hauler every now and then. The trailer is 40 feet long on his truck.

My comment was getting long winded but I wanted to add a question. I was curious about the kind of hay you raise for your small squares, then you said it was a mixed grass. What is the mixture? I'm sure you sell many, or possibly most of your small squares to folks with horses, and I know y'all have some horses too. I know horses normally require a higher quality of grass hay than most farmers feed their beef cattle. I know the farmer I work for feeds his beef cattle,fescue and crabgrass hay. Do you grow brome and orchard grass mix? Or maybe brome and something else? I can't tell you how much I enjoy your videos Kayla, I feel like y'all are my neighbors even though we are several hours apart as I'm in southwestern Missouri. Thanks for sharing your lives with us!

To be a little more productive and storing more hay, why doesn’t Jason modify the loader to pick up two rows (30) bales at a time. The amount of savings and time saved will more than enough to pay for the slight modifications needed.

Moisture & if we was to run preserver on the hay (which we never do) so it’s not currently hooked up. We have a Gun to test it if need be but majority of the time Jason and I can pick up bales or touch / see the hay and “just know”.

We raise teff hay and was watching this video and saw you laying the tarp down in barn. Does that sweat the bottom run of that hay ?
@ChroniclesofKayla
@ChroniclesofKayla 3 жыл бұрын
Sweat from the hay rises in the barn. When we put fresh hay in and if the next morning is cool sometimes we see the sweat rising off the hay. When we lay tarps down, we see our best results from no ruined hay of the bottom layer from about mid June on. Earlier hay seems to still have a mold layer on the bottom due to the first hay in being last hay out of the barn.

@@ChroniclesofKayla I've been thinking about concreteing mine but I was told that blacks the bottom of it too. Best result we have had is rock about the size of a tennis ball packed in the bottom of the barn

Jason was reading sometime back on hay kings on Facebook. He said one guy on there said that Sandy creek gravel works good too. So we tried that last summer and hay that we set on there with no tarp down, the large square bottoms were not ruined at all!!!

What do you think of tie grabber? Worth the extra money?
@ChroniclesofKayla
@ChroniclesofKayla Жыл бұрын
Hands DOWN the best money spent. If you’re doing the square bales the way we are. He’s drive 3+ hours to get a part for it one afternoon so we didn’t have to hand stack them in the barn. If that tells you anything. We don’t go anywhere without the tie grabber

Why do you tie the bundles together, what is the advantage??
@ChroniclesofKayla
@ChroniclesofKayla 4 жыл бұрын
When we stack in the barns - we can fit 6700 in a single barn. It also helps for when we deliver loads of 420/450 depending the trailer. The bales stay uniform and it reduces them from falling in the barn. Our hay is top quality- last year we put up 42000 ... our small squares are all sold generally- that is our sole farm income.
