Kudos for all of the hard work. Changing tires isn't easy. First, the wheel is made to take the tire off from one side. If you look at the rim of the wheel, you'll see the side with valve stem is much shorter. Both tires beads should be mounted from that side. Much easier. When you install a tube, all you need to do is break the bead on the short side of the rim, stuff in the tube, use a pair of locking pliers to hold the valve stem, and install the top bead back on the tire. The comment below about airing up the tube and then letting the air back out to straighten the kinks out of the tube is golden. Finally, it would have been much easier and cheaper to put on a set of chains on the back. I felt bad for you working that hard. But every challenge overcome is experience gained.

As someone who owns what feels like a fleeet of equipment (tractors, mowers, skid steers, UTV, motorcycle, chainsaws, trimmers, generators, cars, trucks, etc etc) each with tires, oil and oil filters, carbs, grease, alternators, air filters, fuel filters, hydraulic oil and filters, etc, I can tell you with absolute certainty that only people with your type energy level can possibly pull this off. As I'm sure you're well aware by now things are always breaking or in need of repair and learning how to do this on your own is the only way. When I saw you mount and dismount the tire over and over I can assure you I've been there. This summer alone I've dismounted a tire over 20 times. You're on the right road. Keep it up.

​@@Meg.AugustLove this video! Brings back old memories. Here's a pro tip from 60 plus years of doing field mowing. Too dramatically. Improve The cutting performance of any field mower. If you take the blades and cut anywhere from 1/2 in to 1. In off of each end of the blade and rebalance it will cut like the engine is three times the horsepower. Obviously each pass you make is not as wide but the speed in which you can do it will more than make up for it and less stress on the engine.

I did this exact job on my old Bolens tractor recently for the exact same reason (the turf tires have very little grip) and I do NOT envy you. The tires I chose were extremely stiff so I ended up having to take them to a tractor shop to get the tires mounted. (They were also 2 inches wider than the original tire, so that made it extra hard.) But yeah, geeze, extremely good on you for doing it by hand. Also, for future reference, when the tires are off it's a good time to clean/paint the inside of the rim to prevent any future rust. :) Also, you can put a tiny bit of air into the tube when putting the other bead on to help prevent pinching the tube. Also, some tubes have a nut on the bottom to prevent the stem from falling into the rim. :)

Doing a good job Meg, I’ve never seen a tube put on before you put the tire on the rim! I usually just break the bead and push the tube in working it around the rim, air it up without a valve core fully and let all of the air out and then air it up again! That straightens the tube out so it doesn’t pinch! The tubes with a locking nut are usually the best ones!

Next time, mount the tire halfway, install the tube, inflate it partially, mount the 2nd half, and inflate fully. A pair of needle nosed vice grips can help hold the valve stem in place while mounting the tire. Inflating the tube partially helps too.

@patrickduncan9724 this size of tubes rarely comes with threaded valve stems. I used to carry a special nickel plated chain that'd thread onto valve stems to ensure they wouldn't get lost in the tire

A zap strap (zip tie) around the valve stem will keep it from falling back into the rim...

The other side of your valve core removal tool threads onto the valve stem (where the cap goes when you're done) to keep it from falling inside... then use the needle nose vice grips (or zip tie) to hold it while you inflate.

Just some advice for later... Extend your backhoe bucket and then use your hydraulics to pull out your mower... Your hydraulics are a lot stronger than the backhoe for pulling and it will keep you from getting stuck so easily too! 👍👍

You do a great job, and don’t give up. I love it! When cutting tall grass and weeds keep discharging to the already cut side so you don’t add material to where you are cutting. Some times I will make the first pass through the center then keep blowing the grass/weeds towards the cut area. It will also help save your belts. Sharpening the blades also helps a bunch. You have a beautiful place, enjoy!

Great determination and effort 👍The right tool for the job is the one you either have in front of you or can afford👍. To make things easier and put less strain on machine keep those blades sharp as it cuts with less effort and pushes grass out of the shoot. An old bloke also gave me a great tip which is to clean under deck spotless then when dry spray furniture polish. Grass does not stick and again helps with shooting grass out and very easy to clean when done. Great tip for long days of mowing .Plus less resistance means getting stuck less as grass building up acts like a huge brake. Like others have said cut as high as possible on first pass with such high grass.

Just FYI - wire-wheeling the rust off gives you a polished surface for the rubber to seal to. People put anti freeze in the tires for weight but it also rusts the rim as yours was after long periods of time. Putting the tube in and trying not to damage the tube while putting the tire on is also a trick. Just found your channel and I love your determination. Changing tractor tires is not easy, ask me how I know. For the future if you get small slow leaks, try putting ATF auto tranny fluid in it, it’s designed to swell rubber which will seal slow leaks. I’m subscribed.

No, my vintage Sears SS-14 would have no trouble here. Same as my newer (2004) Craftsman GT5000 (last of the real gear drives. The atv tires was smart. Best would be to add a counter weight onto the back... takes the weight off the front wheels and deck and she can basically roll over anything she wants. Also a tip if she sees this.. do Not use water to mount new tire beads... use OIL. The oil will get absorbed by the rubber and dissappear and you won't have water trapped in the wheel rotting it further. Lastly, if you plan on doing this regularly, get a thick Seat... you only have one spine, young love ~

I have been in the Property Maintenance business for over thirty years. Started with very little equipment and had to learn just like you. Just to help, you are going to reduce the life of your lawn tractor mower using it to mow down the currant highly overgrown acreage. If you get what you have down to manageable height first then your mower can probably handle it, if you stay on top of it. If you are able to rent a field mower, mow it down this time. Then when you mow with your mower, keep the discharge opening away from the tall material and just take small swaths at a time. That will help the mower deck to clear material easily. Next, keep the blades sharp, get a second set and change them out twice a day then learn how to sharpen them yourself or take them to be sharpened at a mower shop. Using sharp blades will help your mower live longer. Also, when you change out your blades, use a good putty knife to clean the underside of the mower deck. At the end of the mowing season, remember to go over your machine and clean all of the material buildup off and service your machine before you put it away for winter. Wishing you good luck.

I live somewhere rural and mountainous, a lot of times those tires with liquid in them aren't just to add weight but to keep you from tipping over if you mow on a hill like I do. Also wondering where this is, because I'd have to have on boots to my knees to walk thru that much brush around here or risk a copperhead or rattlesnake bite. I've done stuff like this all the time, only daughter of a US Army trained mechanic who went on to work on equipment at the coal mines and for his farmer friends plus I'm subborn and don't like asking for help and don't like paying anyone to do stuff I can try and always succeed in doing myself. Great video, glad your channel popped it. I don't blame you for not weed eating with a brush blade that mess, it sucks and takes forever but that's what I have to do a lot of places due to the steep hills.

Your tenacity is amazing. Maybe some traction boards to get you out of the ruts. I use cheap tiny "emergency" compressors with the screw on to valve hose to keep from losing the tube in the rim. I definitely used your 4x4 and car trick to debead my tire at home since my new shop wont let us use the tire machine. That 322 wouldn't get stuck all the time if you put a set of ag tires on the back. I actually used to cut brush so tall with my 120 that I had to go BACKWARDS. I'd slam into it , go forward then back up and slam into it again. 😂 It sure was sweet when I got an 8n with a bush hog ! Obviously I wasn't far enough along in the video to see the atv tires . I have similar ones on my zero turn. Try holding the valve stem with a vice grip while airing up the tire. I'm surprised you have enough clearance between the larger tires and the deck to not rub it. I'm loving this video. It's so refreshing and sometimes frustrating watching you learn in such an excruciating manner.

I love the videos. As an owner of several John Deere garden tractors of that vintage, I wanted to point out that you should have the throttle down at "turtle mode" when you engage the PTO (mower deck). The PTO is like a clutch so engaging and disengaging at full throttle is like dumping the clutch in a stick shift. Thee electric PTOs are expensive to replace. Generally, you want to also idle down before you shut off and when you start up. Finally, if you have to push/pull/drag the JD, there's a release lever under the right side rear fender to put the hydrostatic transmission in neutral. If you don't do that, you risk damaging the transmission. Just trying to help that old girl last as long as possible for you guys!

Your determination is impressive. As an old man now, it is hard not to yell at the screen and think to myself how much I want to show and help you how to do some of those tasks in an easier, quicker, safer, cheaper way, but then I realize that your just a 45 year younger, female version of me. I am the guy everyone comes to for how to do this or that on a huge variety of tasks, but I know how to do those things or have the correct tool, because I learned how NOT to do it first. One quick tip is to think about how you can utilize the boom on the back of the backhoe, keeping in mind the range of motions available. You could have used that for breaking the tire bead, extending the boom and retracting it to pull the john deere out and I am sure many other tasks you have.(This is your first video I have watched) You are a VERY IMPRESSIVE, determined young woman, that I would be proud to have as a daughter-in-law 😊

Great tractor I have the same unit at my house. You do not need to hitch on the back For tiller. Your tiller runs off of your PTO and brackets in the rear. Good video and I love my deer.

@@Meg.August no you don't you just have to put those two brackets that you pulled off. The two brackets that were attached don't forget you need if you have a bagger it is that bracket that's on top of your hitch the little square opening.

Hope you’re well? As you have a spare tube you could take it into town and see if you can get 2 small nuts that match the thread on the valves so when you put the valve though the rim you can bolt it in place.

Oh my goodness. Im an ex mechanic and I would not even bother with those tires. I 🛞 already know without the proper tools it would be a pain in the 🫏 . I’d spend my time or in your case your day doing things I know how to do. Sometimes your time ends up being more of a loss than the money we spent. But I’m so impressed with you and your work ethic. Ambition and determination to learn as you go. Incredible really. Too bad we can’t get your generation to all just work hard like we did back in the day. The world would be a better place. I just came across your videos yesterday with the well drilling. It was amazing how you managed to do that. Today I saw this one pop up and don't take this the wrong way, but I couldn't stop laughing at a couple points. You did manage to come up with some ingenious ways of doing things. You are amazing. I remember starting our farm with bare bone minimum and strapped for cash. I bought a used tractor and bushog at a farm auction. Not only did it eat up my cash reserves, but I was constantly spending money on breakdowns. One day, John Deere had a 0% finance and no payments for 36 months offer and they also had a special for a free attachment. I purchased a 5045D 2 wheel drive tractor and opted for the free bushog. I got a lot of land cleared in 36 months and paid it off in 36 months so it was a free loan. Best of luck!

I have operated many different types of equipment. I'm watching you try and get out of the hole with your back hoe and you worked so hard but your back hoe is almost impossible to get stuck in most cases. It would really really benefit you to get an experienced back hoe operator to give you some tips and do's and don'ts this would save tons in labor. Also safety things you need to know. You are a hard worker.

What I love about this video is the amount of times you hit a problem you adapt and overcome it's fantastic and I also had no idea you could get a tyre off a rim like that what an idea, I usually use a bit of angle iron and a sledge hammer but this is so easy

After all that hassle, are you rethinking renting a brush hog? I rent a house, but the land lord let me brush hog a 1.4 acre for a shooting range, took two hours with a walk behind machine, and was shooting a hour before dark. I'm 65, a disabled vet, and it takes me a lot of rest breaks to get things done, but shooting is my relaxation, and stress relief. Carry young lady, have fun doing what you love, but do try finding easier ways to do it. Now that the fields are mowed, get a local farmer to plow it, to get rid of the wheel ruts, then disk it, to level it out, and plant grass, or wild flowers to keep the soil rich, and healthy. Oh, and get to know old farmers, they've know how to help, and are usually glad to pass on their hard earned wisdom.

A locking air chuck is your friend. It will make sure the valve stem doesn't fall in while you are putting air into it.

What channel did I stumble into? I wasn't enamored by the title (_(Attempting To Mow 3 Acres of Brush) with subtitle _(Mower Modifications JD 322)). But, like a priceless treasure, first impressions don't count. Meg is amazing! She never quits! Her engaging videography style, even when doing dismal dismounting and mounting of tires, keeps it interesting! Someone needs to get her a better camera to avoid camera overheating, which adds zero to the experience. Then there is *Meg* herself! Extremely articulate and well educated. And extremely easy to watch for hours! And apparently oblivious to the masses enjoying her presence! Truly amazing! Then there is her tenacity and grace! And she does it all on her own, at least in this video. Her well drilling episode was the first hint that she was not on her own, but still led the effort! (I am drooling!)

As far as the lawn tractors go, mostly the pre 1990’s are that solid. The JD’s sold at the big orange and the big blue stores are crap, a lot of them were actually Scott’s brand that JD had bought out and just changed the color and name on them. Nowhere remotely close to as good as a true Deere product. Post 1990’s only the new ones from an actual dealership were really good. I still have a preference to pre 90’s dealership tractors. I am a former JD dealership mechanic. Worked at dealerships for many years. Will always believe that true JD products are the Cadillacs of tractors (kind of like the Honda Goldwing is the Cadillac of motorcycles).

Unfortunately that backhoe she has isn’t a TLB style (tractor,loader,backhoe) so no rear PTO or 3 pt potential. Honestly a walk behind sickle bar would be good for knockdown. I use one on 10 of my 100 acres (cows do the rest)

Hi Meg, just found your videos and love them! Take the valve stem out and over pressurize the tube until the bead seats. Then reinstall valve stem and pressurize to proper psi. You're doing great!

Most of what I wanted to say has been said below, esp regarding installing the tube - I''ve pinched plenty of them and the advice below is well taken. I'm new to your channel, but hafta say you're hell for stubborn. About the only thing I could add would be to check out a valve core tool that looks like a small "T" about 2" across. That will hold the valve stem out positively. I've done my share of fighting those PIA things and that little tool saves a lot of frustration. The comments about renting or buying a "real" brush hog to mount on the big tractor are very well taken. That little JD did yeoman service for you but it was really greatly outclassed. Next time, if you use it again, check the cutter blades for sharpness. A cheap little bubble balancer for the blades makes a big difference when sharpening - to keep the blades even and cut down vibration. I'll be looking for more of your videos.

Love your CAN DO SPIRIT.. In a garage in the 1950's we had an attachment that would attach the valve stem to a water hose with a air bleeder valve so the tire could be filled with water. I even filled my bicycle tires with water which made it a little harder to get going. In Louisiana we did not have hard freezes very often. There are some good comments here about how to insert a tube after you put one side of the tire on. You do not want to pinch the tube. You could take the welder to the rim at the valve stem in the future.

I’m really impressed, you done a fine job working through everything, I’ve been around farm and construction equipment all my life, so I can really see when someone knows what they’re doing. A little tip with the backhoe, when you get off the machine briefly like that to hook up a tow strap, I would put the outriggers and the front bucket down, leave the machine in neutral and leave it running while you get off the machine. It’s really bad for the starter and the hydraulic system, and the cooling system to shut it down like that, multiple times while using the machine. Obviously shut it down when you are done with it, but just to get off briefly, it is not good for it. It doesn’t give the battery time to charge either, it is extremely bad for your battery and charging system as well. Just a friendly tip, to help better maintain your equipment. But I am impressed, you sure don’t see many young women like you who knows their way around equipment, that isn’t afraid to get down and dirty, and use their hand and work out their problems in the field that way you do, especially don’t see young ladies who are as cute as you getting dirty like that either, you are really attractive no doubt. I’m really impressed! I’m also subscribing as well. 😉
