I’m a night shift nurse and definitely invest in some blackout curtains. Melatonin. White noise machine. Alani Nu energy drinks. If you drink coffee at night, I’d suggest taking some instant coffee/creamer/tervis because the hospital coffee kinda sucks. I like nights because I can leave work, come home and sleep for awhile and wake up and still do stuff. I don’t waste my day sleeping especially if it’s nice out. Besides, it’s kind of nice to get up and get outside for a bit. Work can be stressful sometimes. Just don’t forget to put yourself first. Lots of self care. ❤️

Ooooooohh first time hearing about a white noise machine and I’m definitely going to get one we have a kid above us who I will definitely need to drown out to sleep through out the day! Thank you for all the tips 🥰

I have worked .6 FTE straight nights for a couple of years on a trauma unit and I LOVE it. Less crowded and no managers. We actually get to feel free to be ourselves around each other which helps us work together and make it through. We even go out for breakfast/drinks on Monday morning after working our weekend. Also, I have a 5 month old and have found that I prefer working nights so I can spend more time with him. Win win!

congratssss on the new cna job!!! i'm also a float cna at my hospital and did nights at first! definitely would recommend taking a ~2 hour nap before your shift (depending on your shift time--our night shift is 11pm-7:30am) and i found that it wasn't too bad to adjust the day after! also bring lots of snacks and try to avoid caffeine after 2 or 3 am so you can sleep more easily when you get home! loving your content too recently

I had no idea that was military time! In Brazil is the usual time, we don't use am/pm much, just "day" or "night" when you don't say like that. To avoid doubt, we go 13, 18, 23, it is very common

thank you for sharing that part about your dad and heart stuff feeling too fresh/sensitive for you right now, I'm actually going through something similar only my dad had a stroke/some heart issues in January and I just found out my externship is going to be on the same unit he was in and I'm just really not sure how I feel. It is something we obviously cannot avoid forever but it is hard to picture when you are still dealing with those feelings. Anyways, congrats on the job!! I am so glad a better opportunity came around for you, you're going to do amazing

Awh I’m so sorry🥺 I was taking to my mom about it and she told me if I ever get in a job where it hits home a little too hard to constantly remind myself to be the nurse I would have wanted my dad to have when he was in the hospital and I think with that mindset I could have managed it a little better but still it’ll always be sensitive in the heart. My heart goes out to you and believe you will be a badass nurse because of it ♥️

I’ve been working as a CNA at a hospital night shift 7-7 for about 2 months now. I do like working night shift so far, but I will stay it’s hard for me especially since I only work one day a week and am in nursing school. My body still isn’t used to staying up til 8:30 am so hopefully you can adjust faster than me 😂 I recommend trying to train your body now. Stay up as late as you can and try to sleep in as much as you can on days off! 🙂🤍

Also I’m a float as well! I don’t particularly love it as much as I thought i would, only because I don’t have any work friends, I haven’t floated to the same floor twice yet to be able to see the same people if you know what i mean! And at my hospital I do a lot of 1:1 patient sitting for my shifts ☹️

Ahhh girl I am SO excited for you!! This will be the perfect segway in my opinion! I just started night shift a month ago on med surg as a new grad and I think the night work flow allows for so much learning. It still is so crazy-busy, but in a different aspect, if that makes sense! My tips so far -Don't be afraid to sleep when you can! If you're dragging, your body is telling you that you're tired and it's okay to nap/rest when needed! -Avoid caffeine after 1am (my shifts end at 6), this has helped me so much for being able to fall asleep when I get home. -BLACK OUT CURTAINS -Snacks, snacks, and more snacks! I find it so much easier to digest by eating healthy snacks through the night than eating a huge meal at 2am -Drink as much H2O as you can! I try to chug 2-3 hydros a night! You've got this! We're all here for you! :)

I applied to 15 different NA positions and interviewed for 2 and didn’t get any of them which was kinda discouraging :( but! I got a nursing internship and at first they said they could only offer me Med surg but then when I got the actual internship offer, I got a position in peds which infants/toddlers/younger school age!! My goal is to get a job in peds immediately as a new-grad so hopefully having this on my resume will help

Congrats on getting a tech job! I got one last summer and just applied now for a Registered nurse position for graduation in may! Will be accepting a job on Monday and super excited! As for night shift! I would wake up early workout, eat breakfast, eat lunch, clean, and then I would try to sleep from 12ish to about 4:00! My capstones were nights and resource so I had completely ready to go by 5:30 in case I had to drive an hour but you might be able to sleep a little longer than me! Also Alani Nu energy drinks are bomb and were a staple during my night shift😊😊

im a may 2020 grad and icu nurse! i was a night shift PCT on my unit while getting my bsn before accepting an rn position. with nights-sometimes it sucks, but it’s a really good experience. working out before work usually gives me the most energy! the alani nu energy drinks are great when you need the extra oomph though! you’ll eventually find what works for you as far as sleep goes. if im about to work a string of shifts, i will try to get a full nights sleep before the first one, work out in the AM, and then take a good nap

Nightshifts tips : Naping only before the first day and wake up at least a couple hours before the shift (to be not groggy!) Coordinate your dinner to be closer to your shift Don't eat a full meal on nights, but bring a lot of snacks! Having an empty stomach makes me nauseous but full meal are worse ahah Stop drinking coffee in the middle of the night if you wanna sleep okay in the morning (doesn't apply to me anymore but AHA) Always have a emergency energy drinks in your bag AHAH On your last day, try to only sleep a couple hours to get back in normal mode You will be really tired that day, starting it with a workout can save you even if you don't feel like it (A gigantic coffee can also, you do you right) Melatonine et black curtains got to be your best friend Welcome to the sunrise crew gal! I want to do it! I totally understand it’s hard on the body and everything but new grads don’t always get to pick so I’d rather be prepared! I’m also will to sacrifice some wrinkles to take care of people who need me😂😊 I will definitely be doing and investing into so much self-care to scoot me by!
