Jess and I work on decorating our basement after the remodel. I organize and catalogue all of my books, and then Jess and I go shopping for decor at T.J. Maxx & Target for our shelves.

I just decorate with the things I genuinely love. And then I’m always happy with how it looks. I hate stuff just for the sake of stuff. It’s gotta be functional, or something I love, or I don’t want it. Leave it empty for now - and as you collect stuff you actually love, use those things to decorate. Kids drawings, little knick knacks, all that stuff. ♥️

Decor idea that worked for me: Instead of buying generic decor at Home Goods or Hobby Lobby, buy one nice piece of decor when you visit a new place on vacation. You tend to stay in love with your decor pieces when there’s a memory behind it. Buying a pretty frame or a small lamp or a painting will be more appealing than throw-away decor from Target.

My grandfather will write his initials with the month and year in the front of a book that he finished reading. I've read some books that he's read before and it's sweet to see when he read it. Might be a good idea for you to track which ones you've read before. Handwritten stuff is so special ❤

I can't believe a kid needs to always be entertained just riding from home to a department store. That and this constant giving their kids snacks. Every new mom youtuber seems to do this. My daughter was born before there were "hot spots" and just sat in her car seat without food and entertainment and I never had an issue. And yes, she would have tantrums at times, but i never gave in....Kids have to be taught that sometimes life sucks and you don't always get your way.

I have bookshelf envy big time! I used to have a huge collection of books. I’ve given quite a lot away. I just can’t hold books easily anymore. Damn arthritis & carpal tunnel. The basement beautiful. Can’t wait for the tour. Thank you for recommending Ted Lasso & talking about it. It’s one of the funniest & heartwarming comedies. I’m going to be devastated when it ends. The hard part about the internet is that it’s taught us that decor for decor’s sake is the way to go. The decor doesn’t mean anything, right? I love that at the top you said that you guys were trying to start to be more intentional about what you have and what you display, so I’ll drop this nugget here: although this looks very nice, y’all are TRAVELERS! Start looking at your “souvenirs” as decor items. Buy art, vases, old books in interesting places and incorporate your memories in these same kind of items. ❤

I am LOVING this Braun book content!! I have been watching Jessica's channel since before y'all were engaged and I feel like we are quietly (well, mostly me) growing up together. I have slowly fallen more in love with reading over the years and I always love the book portion each year in vlogmas so I love seeing it here in the vlogs too! Also, I love organization so the whole bookshelf organization, perfection. I would watch a video of just the books. Jess-have you given thought to using led flameless candles in your shelf design? I just incorporated some into some shelves that I got & they look great-without having to worry about lighting an actual candle. Plus-added bonus is they come with a remote and can be set on timers. The basement is absolutely gorgeous!! Brady is a creative genius & an insanely talented carpenter! I don't know how he had the foresight to design it the way he did [I know it's based off his own basement], but I can not get over how incredibly beautiful it is. Also, your personal selections like the carpet, the couch, etc. are all perfection. I love everything you all have done. I know a lot of time, money, energy, blood, sweat & tears has gone into that project, but it was well worth the investment in every sense. The result is absolutely stunning!! My parents never use their dining room and I keep suggesting they make it into a functional room, cause why have a space in your house you never use?

I am currently in a studio flat and I had to down size my collection drastically it was not practical - audiobooks and ebooks have become favourite ways to consume reading material but you cant display that on shelves. One decorating tip I learned-put the taller item on the left as the eye naturally moves left to right and it flows better-the globe on bottom right shelf I think would look best reversed with the other smaller object. But I LOVE your family room and your style! And of course-LOVE all your videos!😊😊😊

One of these times that I rearrange my shelves I will actually remember to log them digitally. But for now, that 400 some books are just living in my mind (somewhere lol). For the candle stick holders, get some tapered candles and let them burn down (upstairs or something) then blow them out when they’re at the right height for the space!

The tapers could go where the tiny frames are by the TV. And the globe should go on the top right shelf, mirroring the Atlas in the opposite corner. Def keep the pampas grass vase where it is!
