The first half of this vlog captures some of what I saw and learned when I was invited out to watch a group of A-list studio musicians, cut demos. I listed a few of their record and artist credits in the video but it really doesn’t begin to do justice to just how many recordings they have been a part of over the last few decades. I also can’t begin to show you the mastery that these musicians have with their instruments and their ability to understand and produce exactly what the song calls for regardless of genre or complexity. Smith Curry is well-known in the Nashville music scene and you can learn more about him and his work as a producer on his website at www.smithcurry.com. Smith is one the good guys I’ve met in Nashville and he’s gotten me lots of work and introduced me to lots of music legends along the way.
If you’ve followed me for long, you already know about Bailey James. I’ve been playing for her for about a year and the second half of this video takes you behind the scenes of a live in-studio TV performance on a Nashville morning show. Now that school is finally out, I will have lots more shows and adventures to share so I hope you enjoy these vlogs.
I’m 14 years old and I want to be a professional musician when I grow up. I try to play lots of instruments but the one that I feel most at home on is a drum set. I would say the only thing that impresses me more than a great musician is a great songwriter so I also spend some of my time trying to learn the magic of songwriting. I thought it would help me keep focused on music if I started a drum series where I learned a new song every couple of weeks. After 4 years, it’s now turned into a larger musical search but my goal hasn’t changed. Hopefully, I will keep doing it, keep loving music and keep getting better.

They were both great days. I mentioned it in one other comment but I don't actually feel nervous when I play. I can think of two times in the last two years and it had nothing to do with an audience. Anyway, it's good luck and I hope it stays with me. Thanks and I'm glad you like this!

My goodness, how do you remain so calm? Being on live television nearly gave me a heart attack, I was interviewed about a political campaign I was involved with, was supposed to be live, but I was so nervous, covered in sweat, nearly breathless with panic, that my "live" interview was rescheduled to the next day and then filmed in the afternoon after I'd gotten myself under control. I was never able to watch it, myself on the tv, and when our campaign was sucessful in its persuit I declined every request of an interview simply because I couldn't go through that kind of thing again. You're a special person Mia, I'm betting you'll blow up big, become a huge star, and everyone will say, that Mia Morris is the nicest, down to earth person you'll ever meet. Thanks for sharing.

I hope I can prove you right but I've got a long, long way and will need some luck as well. Your story just goes to show you how we are suited for different things and it's pretty cool if we get to find whatever that is. I get nervous once or twice a year while performing out of hundreds of shows and didn't feel any butterflies at all on that one. Every once in awhile if something technical goes wrong or if I'm playing something I really don't feel prepared for, I might be nervous before the set but it always disappears as soon as I start playing regardless of the audience.

Have to agree with you Mia. Recorded my original CD “East Of Nashville” in Nashville using studio players just like you described. 12 song recorded over a 6 month period. From each scratch demo I had worked up, there was a quick listen through as charts were written out. After that, usually one play through to find the groove, and then turn on the record button and go! 20 minutes later (as you said), out came incredible performances by each player across the board. So glad I made the decision to roll into Nashville to lay down those tunes. Amazing player abound in them thar hills! I certainly believe you could reach that level at some point if you so chose. Keep surging forward Mia because are very gifted as well! Ernest in Lexington, KY

I'd like it noted that you havent covered any hair metal in your drum vids. The snippet of Motley doing "wild side" here leaves us wanting to maybe see Mia branch out and cover it? On the cajone would be extra special, but as much as I love the instrument, Im aware of its limitations as well....lol

That's these dudes. It was funny, the bass player simply played without mistakes. He was the guy standing next to me when I was bobbing my head. Mia, now kewl you live in Nashville So many opportunities rite there! I’ve been encouraging Sina to visit Nashville and hope she will. I honestly think she would love it. As for you... how to do generate attention? A promo guy, an agent? I find this all fascinating tbh! Please keep doing these vlogs cuz they are so interesting!!! Question again. How long have you lived in Nashville? I ask cuz you don’t have a Southern accent. Hey.... have a super holiday and remember it’s meaning!!

I moved here just about 2 years ago. My Indiana friends claim they can hear one so it must be creeping in. I don't have an agent or manager. All my work has come from people seeing me play and introductions from other musicians. I've been pretty lucky so far and have met some people that have been looking out for me.

Mia , that is so impressive that you have had all this happen thru your own initiative. Some others are looking after you now but..... it took you some effort on your own to put yourself out there! At your age. To say I am impressed is an understatement! This is an amazing story Mia and be proud of yourself!!

So I see You have Time to sign some random wall but I can't get an Autograph.... OK , that's cool , I understand..... clearly You've been busy. haHa . Anyway did You record a song while You were there with Mr. Smith ? Those Guys have worked with some of the best , and some that aren't the best but the most popular. Yeah , let that sink in.... That's the thing I like the most about You. You strive to be the best , not the most popular and that makes all the difference. Much Respect to You Mia for putting in the Time and the work.

I had to freeze the viddy to check out that subkick device mounted on the kick in the first studio- I've never seen one of those b4, it's certainly an interesting concept [they appear to have altered the name slightly😉] Have you ever tried one out or heard what it sounds like?

This post reinforces your keen sense of awareness, and totally supports your earlier observations expressed in E8 "It's Relationships". Developing relationships spawn collaboration for those sharing the same mindset and passion. Being invited into a studio of wall-to-wall talent. With nothing more than a phone call, having the ability to borrow someone's prize possession and livelihood for your gig. An accomplished artist who puts his own rep on the line, finding you work. Aren't relationships nice? What's even nicer, is how at such an impressionable age and stage of career development, you continue to remain grounded and appreciative of the feast before you. It isn't just about the music; it's also about relationships. I know a few talented musicians/writers who still to this day, use a porta-potty for their dressing room. They're the ones who refused to develop relationships early in their career. Maybe that's why the porta-potty doesn't have real mirrors.
@miamorrismusic
@miamorrismusic 5 жыл бұрын
I like your description as a feast. It really feels like that in this town lately. So much to take in and sooo much to improve at but it's so exciting and so inspiring to see it all around. I even love meeting and developing the relationships. Most of these people are really interesting and very creative. I understand they are looking out for themselves first and understand why but it's a cool thing to be around people you can respect, have fun with and help if you can.. that's what I want to be and to find.

I go back & forth with the songs for a couple of reasons. First, I know some people, including me, have a shortish attention span. The other reason is when it's not a song I've written, I don't feel comfortable putting too much of it out there in a video of mine. Thanks for your support and don't worry about my Dad, he's pretty responsible :)

Love to watch your 'adventures' with your dad Mia. All good experiences because they're fun and you learn something new each time. It's all knowledge and inspiration. I found all your guys choices really interesting : Patsy Cline, Hendrix and John Bonham. I'm impressed that you 3 know artists and are fans of people way before your time. It gives you a much bigger perspective. I'm the same way. Just for fun, if you get a chance, look up on You Tube and find the song ' Yer Blues' as it's played by John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell. Now that was a 'supergroup' that actually played just for a musical show in 1968 called the Rock and Roll Circus. It's a JLennon song he wrote for The Beatles White Album, but he played it live with his 'friends' just for this particular show. Anyway, keep exposing yourself to new situations, they're all of value. I like the turtle, maybe you shoulda took'em for a pet. Maybe you shoulda of played Mr Turtle 'Maneater' by Hall & Oates and he'd be a fan too : )

Hi Mia, I always say "follow the money" even though I don't always do it. Be that as it may, where do you think the money goes in that Nashville music "industry"? Who banks in the recording studio, for example?
@miamorrismusic
@miamorrismusic 5 жыл бұрын
hmm, well on that day. The musicians all got paid an hourly rate along with the studio and the producer was the one that could either make a little extra or a little less based on how long it took them to do the songs. I got the sense that everybody there was content to have the work and get paid to make music but I'm pretty unaware of those sorts of things at this point. The one thing that I know is that everything changed in this business as soon as music was free and there was no such thing as a record, cd... something to pay for. I don't see record companies ever finding a way to make the money they once did. I don't really know about the artists. I love to play so when people pay me to do it, I have no complaints.
