Ok, before more of you comment "you're not vegan.." I know. I never said I was. As of right now, I am not vegan.. I thought I cleared that up but some you still think I'm saying I'm vegan

I'd say you're doing a great job. Personally I thought there is no vegan food in Japan whatsoever and I love these videos where you show how - if you just know where to look - vegan food exists in Japan too! It's not just white rice and pickled ginger :D Don't mind the sensationalists - like in every other group there are both mean and lovely vegans. I think most of your viewers (or who ever is to judge you) could never understand how challenging going vegan in Japan is... and how in the face of that you're doing a great job. Vegan or not - the animals thank you.

I totally get it. I'm also not vegan, but I eat a heavily plant based diet because it's better for my body. You should show more vegan friendly restaurants and stores in Japan. I live near Tokyo and this video was pretty helpful to know that at least there are places in Japan where I can eventually go.

people need to stop judging Taylor on her vegan ish diet. If anything she is mostly only vegan for herself since she's a model and needs to maintain her weight, not for you. So if one day she decides to eat an ice cream or someone hands her sushi and she eats it then it's none of your business. She even said herself she ISN'T vegan.

Regarding the whole thing about 'cows produce milk to help their young grow so we shouldn't take it thing'. My uncle is actually a dairy farmer and I asked my dad who grew up in a cow farming household how the calves were supposed to survive if my uncle took all the milk. He told me that calfs don't actually need milk after their about 3 weeks old but cows actually produce it for longer and calfs don't actually need it for the full 3 weeks. What my uncle does is he weans the calves off their mothers milk when the about 10-14 days old and lets them eat grass and nuts. Calves are actually born with most if not all of their teeth so solid food isn't a problem and the nuts that are produced for them these days actually contain more nutrients than the mother naturally provides. And if the calf is receiving nutrients from the grass and nuts then they won't be drinking milk anyway so it's actually more humane to milk the cow than to leave her with heavy, swollen udders. Not giving out about your semi-veganism, I just asked my dad about that one day after hearing someone say something similar and found the answer really interesting. Even if you're not interested in drinking milk, I think maybe it might put your mind at ease to know that the cows aren't in pain or distress during milking. I've been in the milking shed with my uncle when there were cows being milked and while they weren't too stoked to be staying still for 5 minutes, they really weren't in any pain from the experience. On another note, one thing that really angers me about the vegan community is how often misinformation is spread around to push their agenda. My dad actually keeps sheep and I remember one day coming across an image of a fleeced ewe with her throat cut and blood covering her body with text on it saying something along the lines of 'are those uggs still comfortable?' and honestly it really, really upset me. Sheep are usually fleeced in the spring when the good weather is on the way and it's to make it more comfortable for the sheep. Only the highest quality fleece is sold on anyway, most of it just gets disposed of. The sheep definitely aren't being killed in the process and apart from the occasional slip of the sheers when one gets spooked, they're not harmed in the slightest. So to spread this false information that people like my father are brutally slaughtering these animals was just disgusting. The only time I have ever seen one of the ewes that bloody is during a very complicated birth that happened 5 or 6 years ago. I'll spare you the details because it was very, very upsetting to watch, but my dad did eventually have to put her down because there was no way to save her and she was just in so, so much pain. ..I've definitely gone into a tangent but what I mean is, there's a lot of misinformation that's spread about the treatment of animals. It can be difficult to know what's true and what;s not but please do do some research (not saying you didn't, just trying to highlight the importance of research). You are of course 10000% entitled to eat the way you want to eat according to your tastes and beliefs but I have a real problem with the members of the vegan community who fabricate lies in an attempt to guilt people into veganism.

I think she meant something else too though. Cows milk is made to turn a teeny baby cow into the big cow it is (even at 3 weeks). It has much more fat and nutrients than we need in out diet in say a glass or cereal bowl of milk. As all milk, cow milk is designed to help baby cows grow. Do we really want to be drinking something so nutrient and fat dense that is overwhelming our system.
@MsAsh3070
@MsAsh3070 8 жыл бұрын
dream that's definitely true but a lot of the milk substitutes created for calfs and other farm animals these days are fortified with more nutrients than most cows' milk usually possess.

Awww! Taylor you are so sweet 💚 The fact that you are at least trying to b plant based is awesome! The vegan community may seem a bit intimidating at first but veganism is not about being perfect. So if there comes a time when you try to go fully vegan and you accidentally slip up its really not the end of the world. You just learn from your mistakes. Sometimes when you are just learning it could b hard to eat 100% vegan at social settings but you could also try mayb bring your own food. Thank you for sharing all the vegan places that you visit! Honestly I can barely believe the comments on this video... Taylor has _such_ a healthy diet, eating almost completely vegan every day, and yet all of the 'friendly' comments are still people saying ''oh i hope you go fully vegan!'' or ''you should look into vegan lifestyle!'' or even judgmental things like ''well it's your body...'' or ''learn from your mistakes''. I can see that everyone is trying to be really nice about it, but can you please stop forcing your lifestyle onto her?

People who can call them selves completely vegan are lucky to live in the right country, with enough money and independence to accomplish that. ♥︎

For dried beans, you can cook them in big batches and freeze them once they are done, so you just pull them out of the freezer when you need them. I didn't know that for the longest time, but it works and saves me a lot. Also, your chili looks awesome and I will so be trying it next week.

Helpful tip: you can soak beans overnight/ cook them/ freeze them in batches- just in case it's hard to find the cans again. (Freezing is my magic shortcut trick for everything!) Thanks for explaining your diet, no need to apologize about anything you do or dont eat. You do you :) Garbanzo beans are chick peas. I have an amazing gluten free pumpkin chocolate chip muffin recipe ( I also freeze and reheat these for a treat every now and again) - the woman I work for is gluten free and I was vegan for 5 years (no longer, but I still love the food and everything I learned) so I have a lot of fun recipes now. Fun grocery store! Thanks for sharing.

Dietary labels should not be that important, I feel like any action taken towards making animals lives better is a small step for each human, but a large leap for the rest of humanity. A meat eater that doesn't wear leather should be appreciated as much as a vegan is, because both wish to make a difference. Of course, just my opinion. ~ stay awesome

"Vegan" isn't a dietary label as so many people falsely believe (that is plantbased, not "vegan"), Veganism is an animal rights movement. Neither the vegan nor the meat eater who doesn't wear leather (where's the logic in that?) should be applauded. "Veganism is not the end point or the most we can do; rather, it's the least we can do. Veganism is the minimum standard of decency.". Also, what difference exactly does the meat eater want to make concerning animals (and/or the planet or other humans) if he/she makes animals suffer and die for him/her to eat out of pure selfishness (pleasure and convenience)?
@lolitaa.3728
@lolitaa.3728 8 жыл бұрын
As much as I would love for people to go vegan we also need to look at the amount of effort "Meat eaters" are putting into keeping these populations rising. There are 19 billion chicken on the planet (more than double the amount of humans), and 1.4 billion cows. without these animals, millions of people would go homeless, therefore a respect for these animals must have developed, (some countries give their cows passports, names cooler than mine and enough greenery to last them 9 lifetimes). I understand your point of view, it is true that animals should be treated with more respect but eating meat is natural for humans, if it weren't, we wouldn't be discussing this now. if everyone on the planet were to become plant based we would need to turn Africa into one big cabbage. that would need a whole lot of time and one big green house. It does take a lot of effort for someone to stop eating a food that is not only part of their nature, but a part of their culture. All I'm saying that ones efforts to find a well known farm that treats their animals with respect is a step forward for all of us. basic business does state that when demand decreases the suppliers begin to die off. therefore taking a step in this direction is for sure going to help out everyone in the future.

I personally grew up on a small dairy farm in Quebec Canada. I totally get why people don't want to eat meat and/or dairy products. At the same time, I always try to encourage people into making better decisions depending on what they can eat and what they want to change in general because I know that there are farms that treat animals a lot better than other places. Just to encourage small farms makes a huuuuge difference. Nowadays, the only red meat I eat is from dairy cows that grew up on small farms I personally know because I know they lived a long life and got to go outside everyday of summer. Even then I eat red meat on very rare occasions, like christmas. Annyway, I just want to help people choose to make a difference even if it is small.

Use mushrooms for the vegan ramen! I found mushroom dashi at an asian store here in the states(I'm pretty sure it was completely vegan) and it was so yummy! Add a bit of your gluten free soy sauce to the broth as well. Then some dried mushrooms and some negi, bok choy(or any type of cabbage) and carrots with the ramen noodles. It will be delish trust me! Also garbanzo beans are the same as chickpeas. :)

Taylor! You don't need to be so worried about putting a label on your diet. I don't like how the vegan community is unaccepting of those who may not be 100% plant based vegan 100% of the time. Eating meat and dairy occasionally won't kill you. We are too worried about WHAT we are eating, instead the effect it has on our mental health (and the happiness, contentedness, satiety that comes with it). If a cookie or ice cream cheers you up or reminds you of your childhood, enjoy it to the fullest, without being so worried! People are forgetting about the effect that diet has on happiness and mental health.

I find that many people are turned off of vegan diets due to some people in the vegan community being a bit dogmatic and even going so far as to be just plain argumentative and hostile. People like the banana girl (the one the proposes that everyone should eat 50 banaans a day or something similar)make veganism look so darn ugly. Grant it you should have your own standards of what is and is not acceptable for yourself and should not be influenced heavily by others, I think that it is difficult especially for new vegans or plant based eaters when they are under so much pressure and they get attacked for any move that is considered "wrong" by the fanatics. Plant based diets are amazing and great and if everyone had a better attitude like yours I think people would be a lot more receptive of those who choose to not eat meat or animal derived foods.

+avaorchid Thanks! :D I always say to eat for enjoyment, with health/the environment in mind. People are always so worried about what exactly they're eating and how it affects their body, meanwhile forgetting about the effect it has on their mental health/happiness. Edit: I used to have an eating disorder. Intuitive eating saved my life... veganism made things worse... that's not to say that a plant based diet can't work... but a lot of people make veganism a very restrictive label, where you are still cutting out and following a list of things you can and cannot eat. They then shame those who don't follow it precisely. Care about the environment, without sacrificing your happiness !!!

*Edited comment:* I wonder if the "pushy vegans" have considered that by being pushy and aggressive, they might be turning people away from their cause? After all if people feel judged and attacked when you're trying to explain something, they're a lot less likely to want to hear what you have to say. The majority of vegans (i.e. those who have said "I am vegan and...") that I have seen commenting here, do seem to be only judging Taylor rather than being supportive or encouraging. So it's no wonder that she (and others) feel put off trying to join in with a community that seems to do that.

Kaitlin Oetting Oh no hun, don't worry - I wasn't specifically directing my comment at you. I'm reading through all of the comments in this video, and although you're the only one here I was leaving my comment more in "blanket response" to a lot of what I'm reading in the comments. I'm sorry if you felt like I was directly speaking about you. And yeah, I actually completely understand your point of view as well. When you are passionate about something, it _hurts_ when somebody doesn't seem to understand or want to understand. But it's just that from what I'm reading in the comments, those who are vegan only seem to be saying "I'm sorry but you're NOT vegan, you're doing XYZ wrong". Rather than saying "hey Taylor, it's so great you're getting on board with the vegan lifestyle - maybe watch this video about how great a choice you are making!" Like that lol. Hopefully I'm making sense :)

Taylor it's ok to eat fish once in a while and as you said you're a model/sometimes actor and you can't be so fuzzy about what they give you. Do you know the Canadian singer Grimes, she says she's vegan unless she deems it inconvenient for others to cater to her nutritional needs.

Being vegan isn't a part time thing that is convenient for you or people, it's about doing it for the animals and our planet, it's more than just what you eat. A more appropriate term would be partially or mainly "plant based".

VanillaLooks, I totally agree with you there. And to those saying "a vegan cares about animals" - I imagine they do, but I also imagine vegans care about the people around them too, and maybe even the cultures they are entering. So it is completely up to the person as to whether they accept or reject food prepared for them by other people - and more to the point, if it's already been prepared there isn't really anything you can do. It's happened already. To look down on somebody for making a choice differently to how you'd make it just creates division, and I imagine pushes people away from the cause that veganism is campaigning for. I mean... even just reading through this comments section has been eye opening for me. I don't think the aim should be to "scare" people into veganism.

I used to work as a cook in a Japanese restaurant and we made the Dashi (broth) with Shiitake Mushrooms and Konbu. The mushrooms are used instead of the bonito flakes to keep it vegetarian whilst still maintaining the meaty flavour (it creates more of a meaty than fishy flavour).

"Sometimes the vegan community can be a little harsh" - this is the understatement of the century. There is a whole lot of vegan nazis that are way too active over the internet (the actually "normal" vegans have other stuff to do rather than offend you through internet). Still, thank you very much for explaining your diet - I'm vegetarian, trying to be as vegan as possible, but I still can't let go of the dairy ice creams (other stuff is now avoidable for me without a problem). I also really like all your recipies and really enjoy your videos :)

Hi Taylor! I've been a vegan for a little over a year now, and I DO understand the social pressures to eat animal products (being pseudo-adopted by Vietnamese parents ; P). It IS possible to be 100% vegan AND not have slip ups. The key is to pack your own food whenever you go out. Make it easy for your work so they don't need to buy you food at all. It can be a little awkward at first to be sitting with everyone and eating your own food (ESPECIALLY with Asians, since food is an intrinsic part of their culture) but in the end, it's WORTH IT! Your health and happiness is much more important than any social customs. Hope this helps and yay for being mostly plant-based!!! Keep up your awesomeness

I have a tip for the beans for you Taylor. What I like to do is when I have a day that I don't have to do anything I will do a quick soak for the beans. You just bring the dried beans in a big pot of water up to a boil and then you just take it off the heat and let them soak with a lid on for at least one hour but no more than two hours. Then you can cook the beans in a big batch. Afterwards you can rinse and drain the beans and section into portion size or recipe size bags and then store in the freezer. You will always have beens on hand this way and they are cheaper and healthier than using cans :) I hope this helps you.

Meat-eating people don't really care, like at all. I know I, and most of the meat eating people I know, don't care at all. The vegans that I know, though they are very nice people, don't let any one they don't who isn't vegan have any sympathy for animals, or even tell us that we can't like animals. While I was watching a movie with them in class and a pig got killed I covered my eyes and she got mad saying that I had no right to be sad. The vegan community is also very pushy, youtubers can't even show meat in their videos without getting bombarded with hate comments or entire videos being dedicated to them being really unhealthy. While meat-eaters, in my opinion, can get hurtful with their comments, I know some of the stuff they say bothers me, the vegan community is much more harsh to people who don't share the same views.

+Kyle Jahairo I'm sorry you have to feel that way but there are some really nice vegan out there, they accept the fact that other people eat meat and stuff like that, maybe they just want to share their point of view. To be honest, sometimes ( i'm not vegan but i'm trying to eat as plant based as possible)vegans will also get so many harsh comments,for examples myself, even my close friends criticized me, when they go out together they will be like oh no dont come with us all you eat are veggies( which is not true) and you'll ruin everybody's fun. I guess we human just have to try to step in each other's shoes to understand people's point of view, but if you got any harsh comment about eating meat, just ignore it okay❤️❤️

i was totally cool with the vegan diet thing on until you said "why would you drink milk which is going to feed their baby cows" -_________- everything is going to feed some animals baby at the end of the day. carrots'll even feed baby rabbits, banana's'll feed the monkeys, but that doesnt stop us from munching veggies day and night.

Cows milk literally comes from the mother to feed THEIR babies. Its like with human breast milk, how its made for human babies. There is literally no point in humans drinking milk; besides their mothers milk. Plus the way they get milk from cows to sell to humans is disgusting. Sorry if this comes off as attacking. Just trying to explain it in a way that you can understand what she meant.
@brandyandwhiskerslol

+bubbamax1990 the problem is that theres plenty of vegetables to feed to animals..but the cows milk is taken from the cow for humans to drink and they take the baby away from the cow so the baby never gets any of the milk! and they kill the baby cow to make the meat you call 'veal' its very cruel and unecessary
@bubbamax1990
@bubbamax1990 8 жыл бұрын
i understand why the milk comes out. just as vegetables literally grow for the animals to feed from mother earth, yet we have no reason to steal the veggies from them. we could suffice with man-made foodstuffs. also, for some people in poor countries the only thing they have is cow milk to get them by (wether its to sell so they can afford to eat, or to drink themselves) its all good- and likewise sorry if i sound/sounded harsh. comments always do that ;)

oh, i see! but my mother used to be a farm girl when she was younger and they had buffalo's that they used to milk. but the buffalo's baby's only needed milk from two of the udders, because if they drank anymore they would actually get ill and have diarrhea etc (the babies dont need that much milk), so with the other two udders they used to have that milk for themselves. some farmers would let the babies drink from all four to make they grow bigger quicker, but they dont actually need it.

garbanzo beans are chick peas, plus you can still use dry beans instead of soaking them over night if you put them in water and bring them to a boil and then turn off the heat and let them sit for about an hour it's the same as letting them soak over night, my family does it all the time especially my dad who's a chili fan. Hope this helps.

this is a really privileged attitude tbh. i'm vegan but i avoid the vegan community on the internet like the plague because of attitudes like this. taylor has to make a living in japan. she is a foreigner in another country, and it's a very colonialist attitude to waltz into another country and say "i'm going to ignore customs, culture & social norms because my own lifestyle doesn't fit with them". it doesn't work that way. if she wants to keep getting work, she needs to be respectful. in japan, you WILL stop getting work if word gets out that you're rude or difficult to work with, especially if you're a foreigner. veganism is, after all, an individual lifestyle, no matter what motivations we have or what we think we're saving, and it should NOT override basic manners and culture.

Hey! I have a recipe for vegan ramen broth! You soak kombu kelp in warm water for a while then remove the kelp, add just a bit of ginger and scallion oil, that you can make by soaking diced ginger and scallions on warm flavorless oil. Boil it up a bit, lower the heat, then add some white miso and blend it together with a stick blender! Don't let the miso boil, it kills it's healthy bacteria. As simple as that. And it turns out delicious! Btw, loved following you around for the day and I can't wait to try out you recipe for chili!

Thanks for showing us all these cool places in Japan! I had heard it was almost impossible to find vegan food in Japan so it is so nice to know that there are places I can go if I'm ever so lucky to visit Japan. I've had my own slip-ups following a vegan diet before (started vegan in 2009 - 2011, fell back to a diet including eggs & cheese after moving to a new area in 2012 and going through a rough patch with some other things, and went back to a vegan diet in mid 2015 after a negative reaction to dairy plus learning more / becoming more informed about dairy & egg industries. ( I went to an agricultural college which had cows, pigs, chickens, horses and that was also an eye opening experience seeing what actually goes on. ) I think it's totally a process tho, plus you've already made some amazing / commeniable decisions which benefit your own health, the health of the planet and the animals in general. Sorry for the long comment, I really like your channel and view you as a bit of an inspiration ( myself being a transgender woman ). P.s. ~ a new documentary was just released in the U.S. titled "What the Health" I recommend a watch if you haven't seen it yet. Also Mic the vegan's channel is good on here.

It was invaluable to me when I was living there for 2 years! Also, highly recommend joining the Tokyo Vegan meetup group.
