Calendar wise, I am right on schedule. My baby plants are growing well under lights in the basement. From now until ‘last frost date planting’, timing is a balancing act between weather and plant maturity. Routine is definitely helpful for adhd. I suggest also waking her up much earlier than needed to help keep her adjusted in the morning and prepared for the rest of the day and be able to study and finish homework be able to have proper meals be able to do chores and much more. Infact even i have adhd and i wake up 3 hours earlier than i need to so that i can sleep-in without consequences of i need to and so that i never end up late to work. This is especially true because sleep issues are so common in adhd, waking her up earlier forces her circadian rhythm to naturally fall asleep at an earlier, more appropriate time of the day rather than at like midnight and the such.

Lavender and well draining soil! Okay explains why my lavender are so happy on the side of my house as the soil, (if you can call it that) here is so well draining that the county doesn't like septic in this area because the percolation (called perk) rate is so high, 1 to 8 inches or more per hour. Yeah, ponding is never a problem around my casa unless there is a membrane involved.

I live in zone 9 in California with clay soil, triple digit summer and cold below freezing winters and have been growing lavender for over 10 years, they thrive here. You are correct that they do not like any plant food of any kind. Word of caution: lavender does not like to be transplanted. I have never had success moving a lavender but I know nothing about seedlings, hope they survive for you. I have found that the French lavender grows best here and is the best smelling and used for many of the teas, potpourri ect. . I am starting another wonderful smelling edible garden area. So much fun for the grand baby, safe and fun for us both. Thanks for these videos, I have learned so much about vegie growing.

Congrats on your book progress. Well deserved! I just planted lavender seeds in my front garden. Unfortunately, the one I had there last year (which I grew from seed and transplanted) did not survive our -25°F freeze a few months ago. At least, it has not come up, yet, though other perrenials have started. Where I lived in Oregon, lavender survived as a perennial and got quite large.

I started artichokes from seed several years ago. We planted them not expecting much. They got about 5 feet tall. They'd appear to die off in winter then come back and sometimes another plant would appear. We finally removed them after about 5 years. They would produce multiple small artichokes but they were trying to take over the garden bed where I also had strawberries growing. I've switched to mostly raised beds and pots. Easier on my aging back. I don't think artichokes would do well in raised bed. When I took mine out, they had very deep roots. I live in PUGET Sound area and we do occasionally have snow and summers are not hot especially compared to Central California

There’s definitely benefits to it (our focus can be unstoppable when we are enjoying ourselves), but habits? Utterly crucial. My sweet spot is 10am. I have the energy and, frankly, the mood to get stuff done. I’m totally useless by 4pm. 😂 As for the prescribed meds, I hated them. But I’ll let you in on a little secret: microdosing mushrooms was - hands down - the best med I ever tried. No symptoms or side effects whatsoever, and only one thought at a time. I’ve been without since the pandemic and only due to my habits have I been functional. Just something to consider as the research industry embraces the substance more. Artichoke plants get huge won’t they overwhelm your roses?
@emilybh62553 жыл бұрын
Did you get artichokes this summer or did you plant them after it had warmed up too much so they didn't get to go through vernalisation? Evidently they need 250 hours of temperatures below 50 degrees before they will bloom. I'm in 8a and want to grow some but I'm getting conflicting info. The info on the seed packet says they can be perennials in zones 7 and above or in areas that don't get colder than 14 degrees. Our low is about 20 degrees. . I'm in 8a and we are still getting warm days and coolish nights and still haven't had a hard freeze . Based on the seed packet info, I thought I might be able to direct sow some seeds but I'm not sure they will germinate (or even if they need to germinate right away). I thought I might put a cloture over it to create a greenhouse effect to help keep the soil warm so it can germinate and baby it through the winter if necessary. Or maybe it will grow when it is ready to grow without a cloture. No one around here including Clemson University Agriculture extension seems to know much about artichokes. Johnny's, where I got the seeds from is located in Maine! Evidently they are mostly grown in California. I'm in NW SC. Most people around here seem to start them inside like you did and plant them outside in the early spring. But doing it that way, it seems they would not go thru vernalisation because it warms up so quickly here. What is confusing is if they can tolerate 15 degree weather, why do people wait until spring to transplant them? Also by missing vernalisation it seems the plants would not bloom the first summer . What do you think? Have you ever heard of people planting them in the fall the way garlic is planted and then allow them to germinate and grow when they are ready after being kept in the soil for a winter before blooming maybe not until the spring?

One of the biggest mistakes I've noticed a lot of gardeners make is that they sometimes over think things. When we don't know a lot, we typically spend less time "caring" for our plants. Once we know more, we want to "care" for them more. But, that usually means things like over watering, over fertilizing, over pruning, over mulching, etc. So, my recommendation: see if there are things you may be "over" doing. Remember, Mother Nature is pretty good at handling things on her own. 😉 We are just there to occasionally assist. 😊 Good luck & a bountiful harvest to you. 🌱👍

I'm so glad to know lavender is intrinsically difficult to grow from seed! I'm a newbie gardener and want some to attract pollinators so I started with around 20 seeds hoping to get 3 or 4 bushes. At this point, I have 1 that sprouted! I'll be happy with that if I can then propagate from it next year. Otherwise, I happened to see lavender trees at Walmart yesterday... 🤔🤷♀
@joanies67783 жыл бұрын
Hope you don't mind me sharing under your comment, but if you want pollinators this season, try Borage. Honey bees love it, it's prolific, and a self seeder if you leave it up that long. I planted various flowers last year for the pollinators and was amazed how lush the borage got. The beautiful blue flowers are edible as well as the tender leaves, which can be made into tea... there are other health uses for it, too, but I mostly grew it for the bees. My neighbor loved it so much, I am giving her 2 seedlings to plant in her yard. I would recommend a stake or little support if it gets full size because the branches on the 2 I had in the vegetable bed got quite stalky. This year I made a wire cage to plant them next to the bed, which still draws all the polinators to the area. Happy bees make this gardener happy!
@barbarafinley42463 жыл бұрын
@@joanies6778 Thank you. Actually, I have several things I'm planting for pollinators. There's not a lot of guidance out there on growing lavender so was excited to see someone talk about it. If it's not too late, I've been thinking about trying borage. Again, thank you.
