The label on the yarn should tell you what size hook is recommended! I try to stick with the same brands of yarn for one project but as long as they’re the same weight, it should be fine. I highly recommend searching on KZbin how to do a single crochet, double crochet, and half double crochet. That’s a great place to start and you can start by just making a simple dishcloth or something. Good luck on your crochet journey!! It’s so fun to crochet and listen to audiobooks!

also I don’t know if somebody already answered for crochet but you can take multiple brands, the quality might change depending on brands, some are easier to crochet than other (like the cheapest one are sometimes hard to crochet) the most important thing is that for one project you always have the same size (3-4mm are the most common ones I bet) you can also double crochet so pour two balls of yarn and crochet them together
