Magnissimo! Luhvissimo! Luhv yuhr alto sax sound also. Ernie sounds well on both alto and tenor; so do you, too. The sound, man! Wilton Felder (RIP), Courtney Pine, Everett Harp (pop-jazz)...great tenor and alto sax doublers. Go for it, Bob!

Thanks Bob, My favorite habits in the book (that I've gotten the most mileage from) are "Begin with the end in mind" and "Sharpening the Sword". When you speak of maximizing down time, that habit comes to mind.

Hi Bob, are you playing out of the omnibook here? I know you don't think working out of transcription books is too useful, which in my experience is quite true, though is there a place for them in your opinion, and how is best to use them. I have the Charlie Parker and John Coltrane omnibooks gathering dust and it feels like a waste, how do you think they should be used? Thanks

Hey! My private teacher tells me to use the Omnibooks almost as jazz etude books to learn phrasing, voice leading, and much more.

Hey Bob, I'm thinking of buying an alto soon, but I'm a tenor player myself. I'm just wondering your thoughts on whether I should have the same set up or a different one?, as I saw that your alto setup is different to your tenor.

Lachlan McGargill I think they're useful if you want to work on your reading

Lachlan McGargill the yas-62 are still professional yamahas i have one my self and they are very capable of everything such as jazz classical band what ever. If you do want a 62 i recommend the latest version the 62III if you want a custom Z get the 82z. Selmer if you want modern a reference54 are amazing if you want vintage Mark VI or SBA
@juanalexander64677 жыл бұрын
Lachlan McGargill mouthpiece I like the meyer 6 or Jody jazz or the vandoren V16 s+, but I'm sure bob may recommend something a little better but these are still very much good pieces and horns
@juanalexander64677 жыл бұрын
Lachlan McGargill I think bob is playing on a Meyer med chamber but I think you should try everything and see what you like and if you like his set up then go for his set up

One thing I learned from the great studio player and mouthpiece maker Peter Ponzol is that you need different tip openings from tenor to alto. They should switch from larger to smaller. For example, I play a 100 (MM) on tenor, an 85 on alto, and it s/b a 65 for soprano. This equalizes the resistance when switching from your doubles.

Hey, I know this is an old vlog, but I do want to make a point about the video game thing. Yeah, sure, you can fill a void with mindless buttons to push. I've been there, and that's no good. But there are games out there that are as lovingly written as novels with thoughtful puzzles, beautiful art, and emotionally striking storylines. There are multiplayer games that engage the mind in the same way playing a game of soccer might (my band plays League of Legends together, and I think it really does build our teamwork and communication). Mindless shoot-em-ups and mobile click farms are rampant. But there are videogames that are worth setting aside quality time for if you do it healthily. 😊

Yeah, and I've read all three volumes of Marcel Proust. No buttons and if you can wrap anyone's mind around his writing - it's completely different than buttons they didn't have then, but does discuss music a lot as well as life with the basic VLOG: Nothing new -- Just different people doing it.
@twofiveone74565 жыл бұрын
It does build teamwork and you socialize with your band mates at a time when it might not be super practical. You can fit in 45 minutes and in that time you’ll have become a slightly better dynamic.

Hi Bob. Please, please, don't take this the wrong way. I'm a big fan, you have helped me a lot in my evolution as a sax player... I hear you saying something like "I don't understand video games...what is the point of it?" well, if it is of any help, ill answer that. You, as a musician, are an entertainer.... You'd expect some people to sit down and listen to your playing...right?. you are a musician, so, listen to music its "productive", but i'll guess you watch a movie or something, time to time... Video games are another form of art... Good video games are like immersive movies, where you are the main character... so playing a game can be even better than watching a really good movie... Also... since it is a form of art, there are artist in this subject, that spend a lot of time playing video games, like you or I spend time practicing with our instruments.... so they have better vision of what they're doing when designing a new video game. Also, there is a lot of "vicious" game players, that spend a lot of time playing without being in the industry... and that is much like someone that spends a lot of time listening to music without playing any instrument ever... in both cases, its not "productive", but its good for the soul. Best wishes, and thank's again for beeing an inspiration to me and other musicians.

+Rodrigo Bertoa well put. I'm more referring to the mindless wasting of hours on (especially these days) games on phones. Just the concept of "killing time" baffles me b/c time is the one thing you can never get more of.
@rodrigobertoa59168 жыл бұрын
Ooooh. Phone games... You're right on that one... Mindless waste of time... Sorry!
@rodrigobertoa59168 жыл бұрын
I guess playing those games is much like listenint to mindless repetitive music.. in argentina there is some mainstream music that is so mindles you would think it's a parody... and sadly, it is not.

+Rodrigo Bertoa Back when I was in high school I played a lot of video games, and it made sense - my parents had little patience for my practicing and circumstances kept me from having a social life. When I went to college, though, I was happy to leave them in the dust, now that I could practice and socialize all the time, and especially when I started working and making it as a saxophonist I had no time for games. Sadly, video games might've done me some good - I burned out, and I burned out hard. All my friends were students and musicians, so nearly everyone was either working or networking, not actually hanging out. Relationships didn't work out when I couldn't take people to shows because I was either working a gig or prepping for one. I didn't get enough sleep, much less actually relax and blow off steam. Then my father died and my mother needed my help, so I hung up the saxophone. Ten years later, I'm playing again, and tonight I'm listening to a Bob Reynolds video while playing World of Warcraft with my friends. Those friends were made through shared hobbies where we're just having fun, not trying to squeeze into the local musical theater scene or whatever, and though some friends live hundreds of miles away, we can still hang. The way I see it, the time I spend gaming and LARPing is key to me being happy. Of course, that's only part of my schedule - practicing still comes first, and so will working when I'm ready to do that. Of course, there's lots of interesting discussions to be had about passive versus active entertainment, how instead of watching other people have fun at a ball game I'm making decisions, being creative, and becoming better at something, frivolous as it may be, but that's a whole other kettle of fish! But yeah, I can't remember the last time I felt bored or passive. Those are alien concepts to me now, and I'm so happy for it.

You had me until you pronounced it JIF...j/k. Been following these vlogs and many things have been speaking to me regarding juggling family, music, career, etc. Teaching music full time with a 1 year old and going to school for my credential leave little time to practice but having the right mindset when I do get time and not concerning myself with quantity or comparing myself is helping me focus on what I need to do to grow and get where I want to be. Going to get back on your website soon. Thanks again and look forward to all future vlogs.
