Had a corgi with the ex. She (the dog) wasn´t all that well trained, but we did get her to not bark indoors relatively easily. She would still let us know people was near our front door by growling, but only rarely bark loudly... Had her for about 4 years and walked her about 2 hours each days letting her talk to all strangers, stimulation is important! :)

My corgi doesn’t bark much either except when she feels we are in trouble. I’ve had many many dogs in my life and I have to say my corgi is the best behaved and best temperament dog I’ve ever had in my life. She is really an angel from heaven and best friend. I spent 1600 on her. I actually got her for my daughter who was 10 at the time and I was very apprehensive about another living thing in my house but absolutely no regrets. She walks right next to us, doesn’t chase other people or dogs and is just full of love. Really the picture perfect dog anyone could imagine. 10/10!

Kaytie Buckhalt That's an interesting point. My sister has 2 corgis that are apartment dogs. They bark constantly. I have a corgi but I live on 2 acres and she spends most of her time outside chasing rabbits. She barks some outside but she only barks in the house when she has a reason to. She's an awesome dog but she seems to have decided that it's her mission in life to keep the cats in line. Fortunately my 3 cats are pretty good natured and they pretty much tolerate her without doing any damage.

Gatsby's super cute and I love Ryan's videos but PLEASE everyone: if you want a dog, don't focus on a purebred breed you want and go spend hundreds on buying one. Go to a shelter, find a sweet dog there, save you money, and adopt him/her! The breed doesn't matter. You don't need a 850 dollar corgi just because you think they're cute dogs. There's so many dogs with no home, no families, stuck in cages and potentially euthanized if not adopted. Choose them!
@janelle479286 жыл бұрын
While I wholeheartedly agree with you, people still have the right to get a purebred. The main thing I would say is that, if you want to get a shelter pet, then do, but if you want to get a purebred then make sure that the breeder you are getting the dog from is responsible and a reputable breeder. I've heard so many horror stories of people paying breeders on facebook and then finding out later that the "breeder" wasn't a breeder and stole their money.

Hannah Marie While I do agree with you and people should go to shelters to adopt pets from there, not every family CAN do that. Sometimes families require something specific (like a hypoallergenic dog for example) so they would have to find a reputable breeder for that breed. I strongly agree that you shouldn’t just find a breeder and a purebred dog just because it’s cute, though. That’s a bit shallow to me, personally, because they could’ve just gone to the shelter and saved a life instead. I think that you should always go to the shelter with the exception of times when you need to find a specific pet, when you get your first dog, and (possibly) if you have children/babies that could possibly freak/be freaked by a new dog
@fantasyfiend126 жыл бұрын

We have had two Pembroke Welsh Corgis for a total of 25 years. They do shed a lot but I would say that is their only negative. Both of our dogs were males and did not bark very much. We had the second one for months before he barked which meant we had to watch to know when he wanted to go out - he would just stand by the back door. The other thing worth mentioning is corgis will tailor their energy to yours. So if we were hiking, they were up for it, but they were also champion nappers. They are gregarious, happy little dogs with big personalities and brought a lot of love and companionship to our lives.

@janelle479286 жыл бұрын

Wanda Richardson agreed. I found my dog through petfinder. It took 6 months of checking daily but ended up with a great dog that's a great fit so it was well worth it. The right one is out there and there are so many rescues that it's possible to find if you have patience
@jasonharron28816 жыл бұрын
I approached several rescue organizations when I was looking for a dog, specifically a corgi since I had a couple of them growing up. 1) No rescues corgis were available in my part of the country, 2) other rescue dog organizations would not consider you without a yard (despite having an off-leash dog park at the end of my block), 3) they wanted somebody home with the dog alone no more than 4 hours a day or they would not consider you, and 4) they required an inspection of the home before you could receive the dog. It was kind of like dealing with a Home Owners Association that wanted to control your life. If you find a rescue corgi, more power to you! However, I found the rescue groups (specifically purebreds) to be unfavorable unless you have a large home, work from home / have a stay-at-home spouse, and fenced yard. But, ultimately that may be a supply/demand issue.
@beckyontour74176 жыл бұрын
Jason Harron That may seem really hard but they wanna make sure that the dog gets into his now forever home. In rescues many dogs already have made some bad experiences with humans and so they need some extra care. So they just wanna make sure you are the perfect home for that dog.

I found my Stuart in one day by contacting Lakeshore Corgi Rescue, the main entity for the Midwest at the time. He was a ten month old tricolor. Of course that was pre-social media, back in December of 1999.... Back then most folks had no idea what a Pembroke Welsh Corgi was. The usual response to what Stuart was, was "A what?" We've come a long way since then. I believe PWCs were in the 30s or 40s of popularity rank. Now they are in the top twenty. I lost Stuart in March of this year. He was 19 years, one month, one week, one day. Since then I have casually looked for another rescue. I've seen several in the last month for rehoming on Facebook groups here in Michigan. So, if you are less particular about gender, age, and color, the process won't be that long.
@misslind9926 жыл бұрын
I've had my Pembroke Welsh Corgi for almost 12 years now. Hands down the best breed I've ever experienced in my life. They're very independent even though they do LOVE people. They're also very healthy dogs compared to other small and even some big dogs. Other than hip, legs, and arthratic issues most corgis if eating a proper diet and getting quality exercise they shouldn't have any major health issues. She's definitely the best dog ever, and wouldn't be surprised if I purchased another Corgi in my future. If anyone is having trouble finding a purebred Corgi, I purchased my girl from Haystack Acres in Boulder, Colorado for about $950. They are fantastic and humane Corgi breeders. Most their breeding dogs were raised as show dogs so you will receive full pedigree on your dog's lineage. Corgis are usally good with kids, but until they're bodies start slowing down you need to keep an eye on them just like any toddler because they do believe they make all their decisions on their own, but they'll just take suggestion from your commands. Haha

I have a Corgi Chihuahua mix. He mostly looks like a Corgi, but has the skinny Chihuahua legs and tail. I got him from the local Humane Society when he was 5 yrs old and he's almost 7. I see characteristics from both breeds. He's feisty like the Chihuahua, but plays a lot like the Corgi. He gets along with our Cockapoo, but growls at our cat when he tries to sneak on my lap if he's already on it. I love both breeds and having a mix gives us the best of both.

My family had a corgi for 12 years! He was a bossy one for sure. We called him the house police. He would bark at us for hugging, laughing, running, anything. If he was awake and wanted you to be awake he would headbutt the door to get in and yell at you until you got up. My favorite was crawling around on the ground, mooing and pretending I was a cow. He would freak out and play. Corgis are the best!

People who take the time to wait and do their research aren’t usually the ones who dump their dogs in the shelter or the ones to abuse their dogs, if everyone educated themselves and think it through long and hard before getting a dog, making sure they’re getting it from a responsible breeder who commits to their dogs, then there will be much less dogs in the shelter

I've had 2 corgis over the past 20 years, which I got from a corgi rescue. they each cost about a $300 donation. In my experience they can be VERY individual (like ppl). The one common denominator is CUTENESS! Let me break it down... Chester: extremely smart, mischievous and dominant. Very trainable. We adopted him at 2 yrs, unneutered (which accounts for his dominance/aggression). He hated all dogs and would fiercely protect our home--the only time he barked. We had him for 14 healthy years! Sammi: Not very bright but the sweetest dog I'll ever have. She doesn't like dogs but ADORE ALL PPL! We think she's about 10-12 now. Adopted around age 4 and was poorly cared for :(. Not spayed and, as a result, has had 2 bouts of mammarian cancer from which she recovered well. Not much of a barker either (but I have known some very barky corgis!). She is vocal though, and will howl and "talk" to me (hilarious). Unlike Chester, she's showing signs of arthritis in her back legs. She's My two corgis were very opposite personality- and temperament-wise, but I'm definitely hooked! For just about any breed you're interested in, there's a rescue shelter. Sure, you might get an adult dog (with many benefits) and you can't mold a puppy to your ideal 100%. Give rescues a thought. Happy Corgi-Life!

If you can do that you're ready! Just one more thing, make sure you have them on a really good diet to go along with their exercise.

My first puppy was a corgi and I learned to take great care of her. The first time I encountered a snake she barked at it.

We rescued our corgi, Bailey. She isn't a big barker but she does know how to use corgi mind control to get what she wants and has the stubborn thing down to an art.

My son received his Cardigan WC as a gift from a friend when he was 5. His name was Tippy and he passed July '18 @ the age of 13. So many of the things that he did, I see Gatsby do. Their coloring was the same and Tippy could be Gatsby's brother. Smart and loyal is what they are. Oh, and Tippy had a tail that could take you out if you let it. LOL! When we received him, I had 3 Pomeranians. My female treated him like her pup and took such good care of him, showing him the ropes. I love watching Gatsby in your videos. OH and Tippy barely barked at all.

shedding is an understatement for Corgi's. Fur is an accessory if you own a corgi.

I have a two year old corgi and I also work at a kennel/dog daycare and I think its important to note that yes corgis can get along with other dogs very well but they are also very pushy. They like to be in charge and may snap at or tag (running up to dogs and kind of half head butting them half biting them) other dogs when they aren't following their "rules". They are bossy, it's a herding dog thing. Just dont be alarmed if your new corgi gets snappy at other dogs. They dont put up with any crap and its important to put your foot down with them and not let them have all the control. They are wonderful dogs but they are a lot of work but 100 percent worth it. Dont expect raising a corgi to be easy! :)

I had a beagle-corgi mix growing up (in my pic!). Unfortunately he passed away from a stomach tumor, him passing was one of the hardest things... I loved him so much! On May 5, we will be bringing home a corgi puppy and I can't wait. ❤️It's been 8 year since the passing of my last dog, I think it's time ;)

I had a corgi (well two but one passed) and I am getting another one. I agree with you on a lot of the stuff. The one that I had was always busy, she barked at everything, and she would cuddle. She would also chase everything (including cars).

Cool! Having Corgi looks like fun. A Corgi seems to be a great dog to have, because they're friendly.

I had a Cardigan Welsh Corgi/Boston Terrier. Damn they be loud. His name was Chunk. He's currently the pet of some really nice people. He can pick out when someone has seizures like nothing else as it turns out. While I'm not seizure prone, one of his owners is and he has helped her several times so far. Also one of her boys is doctor diagnosed autistic and Chunk helps him too. He a good doggo.

Totally the best pooches! I'm on PWC #2. And, yes- stubborn & cuteness dominant! They totally rule with cuteness.

I got my Corgis online (through facebook) but we talked to the lady on the phone and met our puppy via skype. She held her up to the camera, it was cute. And then she flew to us from Kentucky!

Haven't had a dog in years. Got a corgi days ago as I'm off work a few days and can get her settled in and some serious attention before we go on "schedule" She is great. I would typically want a larger dog but not a good option at this time. I have made a true new friend I never thought I'd have. Excited for the future with Billie Jean. Edit she is 5 1/2 months

My rescue corgi DESPISED one creepy UPS guy and would get livid when hearing the vehicle stop in front of my apartment, then house. Years later and thousands of miles away, my current pack of dogs carry on the tradition because he taught them well, and they have continued to teach and carry on the tradition. Seriously, I greet visitors at my door before they can even put their vehicles into park. Mine came from a corgi-rescue website via a good guy who had to get rid of him--he had an inkling that I would be the pack leader needed. Also, with the back problems, mine ruptured discs in his back and $9000 of emergency neurosurgery got him a few more years, but it was difficult for the poor old guy. All in all, BEST dog I ever had, and I miss him every day. He also herded children.

You're not kidding about Corgis being alert watchdogs, but they're not a constant barker in my experience. My Toby was a very selective barker. Typical sounds he was familiar with, he'd generally ignore. If he heard something unusual and quiet outside and wanted to let me know, he'd perk up and make a little "bmph" sound. If after a while it seemed harmless, he'd generally go back to ignoring it. He'd really only bark when someone was right outside or being loud nearby, more as a warning to announce his presence than anything else, but he could sure be loud when he wanted to.
