The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is often described as being the most agreeable of all the small house dog breeds that you could bring home. These pups are athletic, strong, and lively. Their herding instincts are still strong, yet they also have a desire for human companionship. They tend to be affectionate without being overly needy in their requests to have a snuggle.
These traits can also apply to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, a cousin that became distinctive in the late 19th century. The most notable differences between the two are the ears and the tail.
This combination of factors makes the Corgi one of the world’s most popular breeds in the herding category.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a sensitive dog with high intelligence levels. They love to play often, responding well to training by wanting to learn more activities. These pups are fearless in their herding ability, moving cattle efficiently while being vigilant about their watching activities. You’ll get the big dog bark with this breed even though the animal comes in a much smaller package.

@marahbaker8615
@marahbaker8615 Жыл бұрын
@@maxford2357 I think I cam answer this. I currently have 3 corgis, an 11 year old female, a 7 year old male and a 5 year old male. In my experience, each one was different. I started from day one of bringing them home picking up food bowls while they were eating or picking up toys while they were playing with them, then giving back the food/toy with praise for not showing signs of aggression. This taught them they could trust me and also had the benefit of giving me the ability to take away things that they didn't need to have. With the boys, there was definitely a bit if resource guarding with toys but daily training and praise fixed it pretty quickly. My uncle has also had two corgis and I have a family friend that has 5 corgis. Of all the corgis I've known personally, I only had one that tried to bite me as a puppy for trying to take a piece of trash that was accidentally dropped. Not saying that it doesn't happen more often but training starting on the first day in your home really nips it in the bud. Overall they are wonderful dogs but I do not reccomend them to people who want a more relaxed dog or people who don't really like a lot of physical activity.

@@MBuliveivari Hey thanks for the response. The funny thing is for so many years I would see people out and about with dog hair all over them and I would be ABSOLUTELY skeeved out. Now I look at it as those people and myself love our dogs and really don't care that it looks like I wrestled with a bear prior to going to the Post Office...I do brush her with three different styles of brushes, we do sweep and vacuum at the very least once a day, and yes I have had quite a few dog hairs in my food, BUT I wouldn't trade her for all the tea in China. The “destructive” behavior of a bored corgi puppy is entirely erased if you just exercise them properly. I walk my puppy 2 to 4 hours on weekdays and 5 to 6 on weekends. Never had an issue with leaving him at home for 9 to 10 hours when at work. He just naps during the alone time, and will do a little bone chewing.

What a great breed. We've always had large dogs until someone brought a pet store Corgi puppy to our house, and then never took it back. We're glad they did. Unfortunately, the little girl was diagnosed with dysplasia at birth. She fought through it without a complaint for 11 years, until her hip sockets completely gave out. The past year has been rough on all of us, as she has to be carried everywhere, but we're all doing our best. The lesson here is, if you're buying a puppy, only buy from a reputable breeder.

I am the proud owner of a 10 months old cardigan corgi girl, and I have to tell you, the description is spot on. Although she has a super social streak even for a corgi. She's not wary about strangers at all. Yesterday I saw her literally climb up to someone's lap and lick her ear from there ON THE STREET. That was the second time they've ever met. Also, as I commented elsewhere, I had no problems working the occasional long shifts and leaving her alone with proper excercise (at least 1-2 hours per day).

He is the sweetest, silliest, friendliest, cuddliest dog ever, but will also give a big dog bark if he thinks someone unwelcome is at the door, and immediately comes to my side to protect me. They're just the absolute best dogs, as long as they get enough exercise and mental stimulation!

I watched this whilst nodding my head (and occasionally shaking it!) with a smile on my face. We were "owned" by "Candy", a Pembroke corgi many years ago (still miss her...) Yes, she could be strong-willed at times but the love, companionship and _joi de vivre_ was worth everything, *everything!* Could be a clown, but had obviously majored in the "faithful friend" class and passed with honours. I do see corgis occasionally and of course love them all (as I do with all dogs).

Thanks for the video! You got most things perfectly fine, but a couple of things need clarification: - They are not a small, but in fact a mid-sized breed on short legs. A male pem can weigh up to 15 kg and a male cardigan more than 20! - Pembrokes usually are born with tails, but in the US are docked. In most other countries, docking is not allowed. Cardigans are always born with tails. - They are not actually comparable to German shepherds in character. I've never seen a gs be so clowny and ingenious. (Sorry to all the gs fans out there.) - They don't actually need a lot of toys, but good training. Ours has only one toy and is absolutely fine with that. No redecoration around the house. In fact, he knows fully well, what he is allowed to do and what not. They are indeed highly trainable. - They are actually a rather healthy breed and usually not that sensitive with food at all. Maybe that's a US thing? - Don't bath a corgi unless they have smelly things sticking on them. It's not good for their fur and skin. That goes for most double coated breeds. When shedding, you can train them to accept being vacuumed. And a good vacuum will be mandatory, when you get a corgi. :) - It would also be good to inform people about not using a furminator on a double coat or cut the coat at all, since it can destroy the outer coat permanently! - I wish you had actually shown a Cardigan for comparison, they are magnificient and usually a bit less buddy-buddy than their cousins.

The person who made the video clearly has never had a corgi. I completely agree with what you say. GS are extremely intelligent dogs but they are way too loyal and obedient to come out with smart behaviours like corgis do. My little boy is always trying to outsmart me, they love you on their terms and they are mischevious, this shows their great personality and intelligence. They surely are big dogs with short legs, very VERY brave and vocal.

I had 5 since 1989, 2 cardis, 3 pems. Despite popularity they are NOT for everyone. They can be very destructive if left alone too long or often and their teeth can destroy a Kong toy. They are very smart but are independent and can be stubborn. Training will take some time. They need high end dog food as they have sensitive stomachs and become dangerously overweight quickly. They can develop back problems if overweight or injury, none or very few stairs & no jumping from high places. No small children, corgis herd and body slam when they play & can knock them down, older children best. They shed A LOT!!! You will eat and wear dog hair, get a good vacuum & get used to it. They are prone to skin problems in warm weather and climates and need A/C. higher vet bills. They are barkers and its loud & sharp. Them and you will do best with a backyard. They live 12-15 years. You will pay today from a good breeder $1200-2000. If this is ok for you even if your situation changes, great. If not, please look further. I dont want to see them showing up in shelters like many other breeds have.

I always think of a Tasha Tudor painting whenever I see one of these dogs. She always said they were whimsical dogs, and they were the only breed of dog she ever had. Unfortunately, I don't think one would fit well with our family. They need too much exercise. (I live on 2 acres, but we have a HUGE problem around here with ant beds that we can't get rid of. I'd worry for its safety, same as I always was about our other dogs).

1. Cardigan and Pembroke welsh corgies are not related so saying something also applies to Cardigans is a big NOPE. They have similiar builds but are in the end different lineages and breeds. 2. Big dog bark: yep, eardrum shattering in echoing chambers. 3. Love a lot of companionship: yes but teach them to take care of themselves and give them tools to fight boredom or they will want all the attention you have. 4. Love to go on a grand adventure: Yes but this is not a Husky, for average corgi a 6km walk is a lot of little steps to make, and some in good condition and mood reach up to 10km. Not saying the dog won't have fun but just don't overwork your corgo-panion. 5. Obedience instructions: Hugely crucial. Corgi's were breed to be left alone and take care of the cattle autonomously, so they don't really threat your commands as orders, more like guidelines, unless you train them really intensively; they just feel they're right most of the time. Not an easy dog breed to train too because of this. 6. Following you in your house whenever you go: Do not ever put your corgi on the table, it's gonna turn into carpet until you give it a good cleaning 7. Corgi is not similiar to German Shepherd in behaviour or required care, they are indeed related a little but don't just compare one to another. 8. Don't like to be alone for long time: My corgi will just sleep over my absence, any dog sleeps when he is alone, sometimes plays with toys. Don't think you have to check up on him every 3 hours or whatever, the longest my corgi was alone was 12 hours when I was at home and he was just fine, yawning and stretching when I opened the door. 9. Boredom turns into destruction if you don't train your dog properly. My corgi destroyed literally 0 furniture, and just some socks when he was smaller. 10. Corgi is a working breed, and thus was ready to eat farm leftovers. Still sensitiveness of their gut is a case for my dog, but I've heard other owners feed lower quality (more wheat and plant protein content) dog food and they're fine. 11. Corgi shed all year round and twice per year they just decide it's the time to POP and they will cover your floor in another layer of carpet. Be warned, without Roomba or something like this, it's really annoying. 12. Do not let them enter the bed you sleep in per 11. You're gonna be eating corgi fur during sleep. 13. In terms of feeding, keep corgi's diet and calory intake pretty constant and watch their weight. Fat corgi's are really having a hard time to lose some fat. 14. Corgi's are loud and are bark machines, they will be loud no matter what you do because it's the way they alert you that something's wrong. It's a herding dog guarding behaviour. 15. Corgi will absolutedly try to exploit any rules you don't keep consistent.

My corgi is almost a year old and he’s more interesting in playing then being pet. Sometime I just wanna chill and pet him but he would rather find a toy to play tug of war with. Idk if he will enjoy being pet in his later years.

Question: if you shave them down will that cut the future sheding? Had a Pomeranian that was so matted she had to be shaved, she shed 1/4 of what my other Pom sheded, that was for years after. Theory its the undercoat that grows slowly and outgrows the outer coat? Though I don't find the shedding a problem, people with dander allergy might.

When I got my Corgi she was so matted and dirty I had to shave her down. Best decision I made regarding her but unfortunately no it doesn't really cut down on the sheading just delays it. My old girl just turned 13 and acts like a puppy because she's has no extra hair. I try to keep her shaved prerrt short to keep her comfortable in her senior years :)

We’ve had many generations of corgis, and some have done better with shaving than others. A red pembroke we had, we shaved him every summer (were in the swamp and it’s HOT), and his coat grew back just fine albeit with no positive improvement in shedding. However we shaved one of our tricolor pembrokes and it took forever for his coat to grow back right. I think all in all I would recommend not shaving if possible.

the tail is only “non existent” in countries where tail docking is still allowed 🥶 whilst some are born with a natural bobtail most have a tail (and keep it in the UK where docking is banned but it’s still standard to amputate it in the US, Canada etc…)

What about the Cardigan Welsh Corgi? ... the older Corgi. This video is so misleading since they mention the Cardigan only once and give information that is Pembroke-specific. Cardigans have tails, in fact it's the breed standard.

Most Pembrokes are also born with tails. Only a small percentage is natural bob tail. Sadly the US allows docking. Most other countries don't.

@@annakonda6289 it's not even so much that the US allows docking, that's the breed standard for Pembrokes. Most Pembrokes I've seen, even from other countries, still have the docked tail. I think it's sad to dock the tail, though, hence why I got a Cardigan.

Any really intelligent dog will get bored easily. If they are smart , they need to be occupied. Please don't get a high energy, really intelligent dog, if you are away from home most of the day... or night. Look for a more laid back dog that likes to sleep or low energy. If you match your lifestyle to the dog you are looking for, much more chance at happiness for both of you.

They can be extremely stubborn, loud and need lots of exercise. Also their intelligence can be a problem. Used to have a corgi as a family pet, great dog but hated cages. On the second week of a month long road trip he broke the stitching on his soft sided crate. He also laid against the side of his metal crate for a year, so when we went to open the side door, the bottom corner popped out to about 40°. Do not underestimate their minds
