Another great song by Sabaton is the song called “The Last Battle”, it tells the story about Castle Itter in WW2. One of my faves; amazing how many differences people can put aside to do what is right.

@@accountformusic7298 Several documentaries and the few accounts by survivors in them. Its been a few months so I don't remember fully. Look up osowiec documentaries on youtube and that should give you what you need. I can't remember if correct, but I think they said the last confirmed survivor of the battle died in 2005. After the battle, most of the troops there simply fall out of the records, so its assumed they died. I'll see if I can find the one where they interviewed the last survivor of the battle again. If i do, I'll put here in this comment. But for the record, even that one states that records are spotty due to the chaos of war the the soviets.

Wautwaitwait! 😉 I would like to mention that the plan, the so-called "Schlieffen plan" should actually called the "Moltke plan" because while count von Schlieffen *had* published *a* plan for a two-front war it was a pensioneers mind game with the important unsolved problem of a possible collapse of the logistics for the western offensive never truly solved (and mentioned as a continuing problem by the count) and essentially an applied result of and emerging from von Schlieffen's fascination with and search for a deductable formulae from the battle of Cannae - he had previously published a series of analyses called "Cannae studies" - it was decidedly *not* the plan for the eventual opening offensive of the war used by von Moltke the Younger (some also say "the Lesser" as opposed to his uncle, the victor of the Unification Wars of 1864, 1866 and 1870/1871). While it bears a superficial similarity and *is* deducted from war games and analyses held and comissioned by both von Schlieffen in his tenure as Chief of the General Staff *and* von Moltke in *his* it was different to the degree of being a completely different operation under substantially different circumstances (the number of deployable formations from peactime conditions and the mobilisation times of the four powers chiefly involved initially - Germany, Austria-Hungary, France and Russia - had substantially increased and decreased). Von Moltke had, rightly so, added divisions to the 8th army in the east (the very formation that carried the war into Congress Poland when this song takes place after completely annihilating Samsonov's 2nd army in the Battle of Tannenberg and the effectively neutralising 1st army under von Rennenkampf at the First Battle of the Masurian Lakes) and striped some from the already insanely congested western offensive. While many will claim the Western Offensive failed at the Marne because of this and von Moltke lost the war for Germany in this initial campaign they willfully overlook, or intionally ignore, that the the war might well have been won in the west with German troops in Paris and still lost if the unexpectedly quick mobilizing Russians had brushed a reduced 8th army (presumably still under the command of the allegedly weak-nerved von Prittwitz) aside in eastern Prussia and taken Berlin. Sorry - it's been a pet peeve of mine for years🙀. Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

The attack in February so concerned Russian High Command, that they asked the defenders to hold out for two days to evacuate civilians. The garrison held out until August, six months. By then holding the fortress was completely untenable, and von Mackensen's Gorlice-Tarnov Offensive had the Russian army on the run, effectively out flanking Oscowiec.

Hey VTH, if you love Sabaton, you ought to check out some of Iron Maiden's historical songs, too. Anyone of these should do the trick, and are some of my personal favorites. * Aces High (about the Battle of Britain through the eyes of a British ace). * Two Minutes to Midnight (about the Cold War). * Paschendale * Alexander the Great. * Empire of the Clouds (about the crash of the R101). * Montsegur. * Afraid to Shoot Strangers (according to Bruce, the singer, about the Gulf War).

The reason there was so few defenders was because at the time, the Russians were pulling back their forces all along the front, and holding this fort was crucial to protecting the flanks of the retreating Russian forces.

What I think what was the worst psychological part for the Germans: nowadays, the look of Zombies is nothing unusual. I mean, you don't expect to see them in real life, but through horror movies, the walking dead, game of thrones, etc., there is already some little sort of optical resemblance. Back then, they have not seen anything like this even in fiction.

I dont know that any survived that were actually in the gas. Ive seen somewhere that those on the flanks lived but they didnt get that dose of gas. The man who lead the counterattack did in fact die later that night. But considering the agony that would have been to live for even the 4-6 hours after the gas... i mean, hell no isnt strong enough to describe my feelings on that.

After ww1 mask became an incredible popular item that was sold to the soldiers that returned from the front, as many of the side effects of the chemicals that were used to gas troops left deformities in the nasal cavities, jaws and eyes. The masks were creepy AF but it was far better than what lies underneath. So you know, one more thing to think about if you thought that surviving was the difficult part.
