I am loving the way you call out things just before they get to them. And yeah, they goofed on the son thing. As much detail and care as they put into these things, there is the occasional slip of the tongue or just honest miswording at times that they don't catch. Big one is flags, it's more or less a running gag at this point that every major series dealing with Europe in some fashion will have at least one flag wrong for the country/year it's shown for. Especially when it comes to England, their artist has more or less declared the Acts of Union their personal nemesis. It's why they follow these up with a 'Lies' video where the writer goes back and addresses mistakes, errors, or just adds in cool details that they couldn't ft in the episode.

Also, Gavrilo identified himself not as a Serbian nationalist, but as a Yugoslav nationalist. The ultimate goal of his ideology was the liberation of Southern Slavs living under the Austria-Hungarian occupation. That includes Croats, Slovenes and Bosnia's muslim population at the time. This is a problem because it might create the wrong picture in people's minds. Someone might think that this was solely a Serbian movement when it actually had both muslims and Croats as members/followers. It is important to point this out. Greetings from a Sarajevo Serb!

The sandwich story is apocryphal - nice story though, but it is fact that Franz Ferdinands car did stall after taking a wrong turn right where Princip happened to be walking past. Also, still no mention of Conrad von Hotzendorf (lets go with CvH from now on to save me typing it out every time) CvH was the Chief of the General Staff of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He had pushed for war against Serbia well over a dozen times from about 1912 onwards (that's two years BEFORE FF's assassination). CvH was a big believer that AH needed to show Strength in the face of the rise of different culture groups wanting to break away from the AH Empire. And Serbia was his frequent target. By squashing a breakaway Serbia he reckoned it will pull other dissident factions inside AH into line. As Chief of the General Staff he held a lot of sway with the Emperor ... but one other guy was just a little bit more powerful - yep, Arch-Duke Ferdinand. He constantly rebuffed CvH's warlike proposals and favoured a more modern Federation of semi-independent states inside the Empire. So Princip killed the one man that had stood in the way of CvH's desire for war against Serbia for several years. With FF's death Princip had unknowingly removed that barrier and given CvH exactly what he had wanted - war with Serbia.

Out of all the ironies that started WW1, I think the great power least prepared and least willing to fight a big war was the one that eventually started it. I mean, Austria Hungary at that moment in time did not really have an agenda of expansion but rather one of consolidation (where they were discussing and planning different ways to keep their Empire alive), and yes, interestingly enough, as you mentioned, Franz Ferdinand was the one person that could have been able and would have been willing to give the southern slavs what they wanted. He didn't really like them (after all, he was just as racist as pretty much every single person during that time), but the "United states of greater Austria" that was proposed by blessed Karl in an effort to save the great power during his short reign was Franz Ferdinands brainchild which he argued over multiple times with Franz Joseph and Conrad von Hötzendorf (who would have most likely earned the title of most incompetent leader in any war other than WW1). All the other big nations had expansionist ideas: - Germany mainly wanted to form Mittelafrika - France wanted to get Elsass-Lothringen back - The UK wanted to humiliate those uprising Germans - Russia wanted to extend their influence over the Balkans - Italy wanted to continue their risorgimento. - And the Ottomans (Ottomen?) wanted to get back at those Balkan States for humiliating them just a few years prior. But due to this series of unfortunate events, it was Austria Hungary that started the war.

Something I find interesting about Franz Ferdinand is that he was, in reality incredibly anti- Serbian. However, despite this loathing, he knew that Austria- Hungary needed them if it was to survive as a nation. He was one of the big backers of a Tripartite Kingdom, where instead of just the Empire of Austria and Kingdom of Hungary, there would be a third nation for the Serbs. This entire part of Austro- Hungarian History is immensely fascinating, and full of contradictions like Franz Ferdinand.

He chose to use the death of his nephew as an excuse to start a war to expand his empire's territory. He may not have known how bad the war would be, but bears a lot of the blame for starting it. Yeah, they have a episode at the end called "Lies" where they go over all the misstakes they made and goes in to some details about the stories that might or might not be true. They adress it there, it's an obvious error. There are a couple of them (wrong Russian flag, calling Moscow the capital of Russia etc).

I'm curious, the swedish word for principle is princip. Does the word come from Gavrilo Princip or did he just happen to have that last name? Feels like a strange name, but is the word principle so young to be named after him?
@stevecooper1824
@stevecooper1824 3 жыл бұрын
No, the word is much much older. "Princip" comes from the Old French "principal", which came from Latin "principalis". The Latin origin is sometime in the 11th century.

The tragedy of the moment when the Archduke dies, that lead to a greater tragedy no one could have imagined. Not to mention, the whole concept of how he died, the events of the assassination, if you put it to pen and paper in a book, it might seem comical. If it was made into a Hollywood film, no one could believe it, it would be an absolute farce. And yet, over 100 million people would be dead in a couple decades, including the victims of the Holocaust.

Can't blame it all on Sarajevo assassination. The Austro-Hungarian empire had pressed Serbia for 50+ years before this event. Their biggest plan was called "Drang nach Osten" which was an idea of AH and Germany to expand towards the East. Serbia was a quickly developing country standing opposing to them. They represented Serbia at the Berlin Congress and were the reason why Serbia didn't gain all of the territory they freed. They have even forbidden the use of Cyrillic in Bosnia and promoted so many anti-serb politics in that area. Also, the Royal Family was pro-France/Russia, opposing to the previous one who was pro-AH.

The fact that Gavrillo wouldnt even see the end of the war is kinda sadder than what it should be He would not live long enough to see the consequences of his action. How the empires would fall, how Serbia would gain what he wanted, and how everything get's fucked again by another war
