Tyler I think I say this every year but man I don't know if it's possible to realize how lucky you guys are to have such a great family. My daughter's never met a relative. The other day she asked me if I ever had a family. Another day asked me if my mom spoke English (I guess assuming maybe the language barrier could be a reason why she'd never spoken to her?) and I would be lying if I said I didn't get a little jealous seeing how amazing Benita is as a mom and grandmother, and Jessica's parents too. Genevieve is so blessed to have all that love around her. What I wouldn't give for a caring family. with even half that much love. 💘🥲

Hugs to you! The only family I really have left anymore is my mother along with my great aunt and great uncle (who I see twice a year). I can relate to you in the sense that I have other “family” that is technically alive, but are the furthest thing from being considered real “family” and aren’t in my life. It’s a bizarre feeling to know you have relatives out there still in the world, gathering for holidays themselves and living their lives, completely separate from you and your own life, and likely not thinking about you or missing you at all. The holidays are especially hard for that reason, as it’s a huge reminder that your family isn’t like everyone else’s. I am beyond grateful and blessed to have the three family members that I have, but it’s still difficult to know that they are it, especially since they aren’t getting any younger. I’m so sorry you know this pain as well. I am glad that you and your daughter have each other and can make those kinds of memories with each other even if it’s just the two of you, and I’m sure she will understand and appreciate just how special that kind of a relationship is the older she gets. My heart and prayers are with you during this season. May God bless you and your daughter! 🙏🏻💕

I'm 66, she's been gone but never forgotten, everything she taught me I carry on and teach others :). Caramel Icing from Benita's Mom 8-Inch Cake ¼ cup butter ½ cup brown sugar, firmly packed (Tyler liked dark brown) Pinch of salt 2 Tablespoons milk 1 cup powdered sugar ¼ teaspoon vanilla 9x13 Inch Cake ½ cup butter (1 stick) 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed 2 pinches salt 4 Tablespoons milk 2 cups powdered sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla • Melt butter in sauce pan. • Stir in brown sugar and salt. Cook for 2 minutes over low heat, stirring constantly. • Add in milk, stir until mixture boils. • Remove from heat and whisk in (gradually) powdered sugar and vanilla. • Pour over cake and smooth over entire surface.

My grandma made a very similar caramel icing! I’ve never seen anyone else make it. She boiled it for 2 mins and we waited to add the icing sugar until it cooled and it’s even more like fudge! It was so cool to see that be part of your tradition too.

Those cookies were always called white mice in my family. I think it had to do with how my gran shaped them. Rounded and pinched at one end.
