Also, I was just thinking that it’s great how they’re being so welcoming at the VMAs these past few years with regards to the global representation of musical styles, as far as having performances and nominees/winners from Africa, Brazil, or the Caribbean, not to mention all the K-pop, reggaetón, urbano, etc. While it’s simply a sign of broader musical growth, globally, I can’t help but feel it’s also indicative of the American VMAs being a total snoozefest on their own. Like if it were ONLY American artists, how boring it would truly be. Wasn’t always that way. But American music these days is just not enough on its own to be interesting. I say this because I’m a HUGE fan of Karol G, Ozuna, Bad Gyal, Anitta, Natti Natasha, and many other Spanish-language artists. I remember in the 90s and 2000s when the ONLY language we heard being performed at the VMAs was English. Even with Latin artists. Well… meaning once in a while seeing Shakira, Ricky, or Jlo. That was about it. Lol. And very mainstream, watered down. It’s amazing that Karol G and Shakira can win last year for their duet, which hit #7 on the Billboard charts, while being all in Spanish…but the heavy global presence at the VMAs sort of speaks to the… stagnancy (?) of the American music scene now. It’s just so… dull. The Latin artists are way more fun, chill, and with better music in my opinion, and just more interesting… so I think it’s good that they’re there, but it’s also making MTV and the US music market look lowkey "in-need" haha
