I think method dressing also speaks to the strength of a film’s costume design and its aesthetic. If a film doesn’t have a distinctive feel, then method dressing for it will either fall flat or be nonexistent because the star and their stylist have nothing notable to pull from or reference.

@@taegan1831 all films should have a recognizable style/style elements for each character. That's basic costume design. If the character doesn't have that either the writers the director or the costume designer (sometimes the actor) fcked up.

Personally, I really enjoy method dressing & I like that it's picking up steam. However, I think we might start seeing more "fails" in the future, not just caused by bad timing/tone deafness (cough cough wear your florals cough cough) but weak styling. Part of what maked some of these past "successful" looks work is the use of detail & reflecting the character/movie (EX: Elle Fanning wearing these flowy, elegant, floral looks that feature tie backs to Sleeping Beauty or Margot Robbie recreating famous Barbie looks). It also requires a willingness to commit & being open to challenge/play around with personal style.
@dolphinsky24
@dolphinsky24 Ай бұрын
Yes, yes and yes. If a star isn’t willing to commit (like the Madame Web cast who thought wearing web-themed dresses was enough), then they shouldn’t do it at all. You have to go all in with outfits, hair, makeup and ENERGY for method dressing to work. As well as understanding the film/character you’re method dressing for.

I think it was Haute LaMode who said that a certain level of fantasy is required for method dressing to be successful. Example: Margot Robbie dressing as Barbie for 'Barbie', perfect example of mixture of fashion, promotion and fanservice. vs. Blake Lively dressing in florals while promoting 'It ends with us'… Total failure, abort! Run! Why are you worried of your outfits while discussing such a serious topic? You should be talking about domestic violence, support victims and giving resources! And talking about your booze/shampoo/whatever brand. Are you serious? What a dumpster fire... Run, girl! RUN!

the weirdest thing about blake lively's "it ends with us" wardrobe (to me) is the distinct lack of purple. blake is more respected for her style than her acting talents so, while tone deaf, i can understand why she wanted to method dress for the film's promo... however making the theme "flowers" (all because the protagonist is a florist and has a dumb flower name) was an incredibly stupid and ridiculous choice. lily blossom bloom's flower shop barely even factors into the story, ffs. i feel like the obvious choice shouldve been that blake just parade around in her usual style (so she can be placated and still have her so-desired "barbie" moment), but mute some of the flashier-aspects of her style and make an effort to highlight purple as the main colour in her outfits in order to (both) show respect to the cause (the purple) and demonstrate the serious and mature subject matter of the film (muting her style-slightly, and leaning towards sleeker choices; i.e, megan thee stallion's court outfit)
@moustik31

Also, her outfits looked bad. I feel, like a tasteful flower-themed outfits and the right communication would have made her go viral! She could have linked the flowers to survivors' resilience and ability to keep appreciating beauty, even in the midst of tragedy. Edit: the ugliness of some of these outfits was a genuine surprise as most of us have come to appreciate her safe but efficient Met Gala looks.

I only know what I know about Blake Lively and her film through word of mouth and some short vids so I won't say I'm an expert. But in regards to her method dressing, my o ly suggestion I can have that others have not said was to maybe use the Language of Flowers into her clothing. Taking the communicating through a step further. Like incorporating a flower and its meaning into her clothes that matches with her characters journey. But like I said I'm no expert, just gonna ask for some thoughts on this suggestion?

It has always bugged me that men weren't allowed to play with fashion like women can. My dad was gressed by his daughters in the 70s. Pale burnt orange, soft butter yellow and the blue to match his eyes. Those were the suits. One sister made his ties. I was in charge of making sure he picked the right shirt and tie for the suit. Mom was in charge of laundry detail and ironing. We had so much fun dressing him and he REALLY enjoyed the attention he got at work.

A couple of method dressing omissions that I remember is Beyonce' for 2002's Austin Powers in Goldmember. She spent the majority of the run paying homage to 70s style with her outfits and hair. True, I think that's where I've seen the most men in recent years do a form of method dressing. Chadwick Boseman, director Ryan Coogler, Winston Duke, Tenoch Huerta, and Daniel Kaluuya all used the red carpet and press appearances to wear elements of their characters costumes, pieces actually used in the movie, or from their personal cultural background to play on themes in the movies. Even people who were not part of those the movies showed up at the premieres celebrating Afro-futurism. Lupita has been method dressing for a while too. She commited to wearing headwraps when she promoted the Queen of Katwe.

To me the biggest issue with the method dressing in the It Ends With Us press tour was more to do with a bigger issue the actress was having. She didn’t understand the movies, its themes, or her own character. She wore florals because she played a florist named after a flower instead of choosing to embody her character’s traits and role in the story. I think if she’d worn things more in line with the best looks from last years met gala, focusing not just on flowers but on a sense of decay and time running out, it would have worked. Even if she’d just highlighted the strength and resilience or the naïveté of flowers (those orchids encased in resin earrings come to mind) her looks would have fit the tone and message of the movie. Fashion and aesthetics are tools that you can totally use to reinforce even serious or heavy messages, you just have to be on the same page as your audience regarding what those messages are
@okijoki_art
@okijoki_art Ай бұрын
Totally agree. She totally missed the mark :( For the florals, I feel what missed out on was the opportunity to play with flower language and color. Maybe pink and white flowers covering bruising blues and blooming purples and sickly yellow undertones-wilted flowers, even. For such a serious topic, subtle and modest clothing and a more muted color palette would work best. Purple eyeshadow that's subtle enough it could be cute and floral, but upon closer inspection, and taking the full look into account, are more likely to represent bruises. Pair that with a pink blush beneath the eyes to mimic eyes swollen from tears, then you have a look that represents domestic abuse easily. If asked about what's being worn, it would be the perfect opportunity to bring awareness to domestic violence. Total missed opportunity and very poorly handled on her part. Every method dressing should occasion should pay homage to some element of the film. Whoever was in charge of the wardrobe didn't understand seem to understand that, unfortunately.

the best types of method dressing is when the looks are less costumey, that only works if the movie gives space for that (barbie). I think zendaya’s looks always work because the perspective is always from a fashion standpoint rather than making a costume. When I see her looks, I still always see zendaya and not her trying to recreate her character. I hope that for the future, if people adopt this more, they will make more interesting choices than just looking like they’re wearing a costume.

Zendaya sold me on method dressing with the challengers press tour, it was perfect, every single time. Having seen both times that Blake caused controversy with her method dressing I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't on purpose, bad press gets people talking. I recently watched the documentary "In Vogue" and also taking into account the recent VMAs red carpet... Madonna's influence on pop culture specifically in fashion is something that is not talked about much and sometimes I feel like there is an attempt of "disappear" that influence... for example the other day a friend dressed in a pastel silk gown that looked like underwear and the cones of the bra were slightly set, with a leather jacket, she also wore some earrings in the shape of cross and on her right arm she wore many black bracelets, everyone at the party told her that her look was very "Madonna-esque"... and she just didn't understand, she showed me images of a Vogue editorial where she had taken her inspiration and she said that Madonna was not in it and that the editorial was also from the 90s and that Madonna was only from the 80s... lol The editorial in question was "Wild at Heart" by Peter Lindbergh for September 1991... in which Anna Wintour refers to as "Madonna meets Brando." To this very day it seems very bizarre to me how there are people who think that Madonna was a local girl from Michigan who had a one hit wonder and then disappeared from the face of the earth. 😂

I love method dressing when it works. I feel like what's missing from this video is not mentioning "Disney Bounding" which started around 2011-2012. I feel that its rising popularity with normies has made it more standard around dressing like a character, without it being a costume, to get around theme park rules and the rise of social media. So when Elle and Angelina were dressing like Aurora and Maleficent, for the film, people referred to them as doing disney bounding. It has since gone beyond disney into any sort of fandom, of going to events, movies, places wearing clothes inspired by that fandom.

Side note, I think if the Ends With Us marketing team and Lively had treated the movie's theme with the appropriate gravity in trailers and interviews, Blake could actually have worn florals with abandon -- just frame the motif as an empowering statement about how we can "blossom" when we break free of violent or toxic relationships. It'd be easy to point out that flowers are symbolic of hope and resilience: they're fragile, yet powerfully beautiful when they're able to grow freely. In a healthy environment, they thrive. I guess what I'm saying is, Blake, if you need someone to write you press statements for the sequel, I'm unemployed/available

Perhaps maybe start with bright florals, then lose the colour look like a wilted flower somewhat broken, only to come back with more pastel look and then perhaps on release day back to those bright colours again. To show a tribute to supposed message of it ends with us. You can start out bright and yet have someone completely knock you down. But you can and will regrow and even brighter than before. 🌹🥀🌷🌹somewhat like this Or do a seasons changing, start with summer transition to fall, winter, spring and back to summer. What I'm tired of seeing are all the woman pushed to do this while the men are still giving the "ME just being here is enough vibe" it's glaringly obvious (not that we expect much from men on the carpets PERIOD but, many have tried and are SUCCESSFUL at it, it truly does add to a movies whole aura good or bad when the WHOLE cast shows the same level of dedication) Let the fun and creativity of method dressing sweep all aspects 😂❤I do it and I'm not a celeb like Zendaya & Larson said it makes me feel more confident heading into particular situations I'm not versed in (job interviews, matching the theme of a restaurant on a date etc.) Definitely a "security blanket" that has gotten me through my MOST stressed times🤲🏾the level "whimsy" you have to have while forming the fit lol kinda forces some of the tension out of whatever your walking into🤔best way to explain it

imo i felt like little women 2019 would’ve been a lot of fun if the cast did method dressing for the press run. like i have specific ideas for the looks that could’ve been done with the march sisters alone 😭 outfits specifically tailored toward each characters’ personalities 💔

Emma Watson did the Disney Princess method dressing in 2017 for Beauty and the Beast before The Little Mermaid & Maleficent 2. She wore rose motives, french looks and yellow dresses.

One of my favourite method dressing example was Lily James’s promo tour for Cinderella in 2015. She looked like a real princess on the red carpet.

When I was a kid, I remember seeing a picture in a magazine of an outfit Katy Perry was wearing when the Smurfs movie was out. She wore a white dress with Smurfette on it, blue heels, her hair was blonde, and her nails were painted blue. Also, my twin sister and I love wearing themed outfits when we go to watch movies. We’re going to watch Wicked, and I plan on dressing in a Glinda inspired outfit since I already like wearing pink, girly clothing, and she’s going to wear an Elphaba inspired outfit.

Wicked is perfect for method dressing. You already saw it with many of the actresses who played the parts in the stage shows. The pink-green combo is just so striking and I cannot wait to see more amazing duo outfits in the weeks to come.

I'm 100% here for method dressing to promote movies with strong themes and aesthetics - genres like musicals, fantasy, or sci-fi. Like the movies essentially serve as your red carpet "themes" and imo it's easier to create a conceptual fashion look if you have an existing theme or aesthetic to draw from, instead of just winging it for every event. Being in the entertainment industry basically gives you carte blanche to be bold and creative with your fashion choices. And who doesn't love a cohesive aesthetic with attention to detail? Also, Zendaya is the queen and everyone else is just trying to catch up.

I love this trend so much. I love themes. I’m the type of person that gets excited with lots of ideas so themes kind of give me some boundaries to focus on. There are so many different worlds and characters in film and tv so i like when actors bring that into real life with fashion!

One of my favorite examples of method dressing is probably the most subtle. I always loved the way Demi Moore showed up to the Striptease premiere with a shaved head and a dress showing off her jacked arms. Instead of doing the expected seductress style, she chose to get people talking about the more important film, G.I. Jane.

I absolutely love this trend, I hope it becomes standard practice because overall it makes press tours more interesting. I usually don't care about movie press tours and don't pay attention to them, however method dressing catches my attention and makes me more interested.

As someone who loves pulling inspiration from my favorite characters in my daily looks, I love seeing method dressing! It's like a puzzle -- how to reference a character or concept in an outfit when not trying to replicate their look exactly (or simply can't). It's a great way to get creative with your everyday life, and to add a little whimsy to the daily grind.

Blake Lively’s method dressing would have been less tonedeaf if she’d done a little less and actually been sincere and honest during interviews instead of trite and flippant…. Not a bad idea to honor her character with flowers but a terrible execution.

I wish people would rethink making the conclusion that b/c someone receives criticism it's b/c of their inherent properties. Sometimes it's based on a persons inappropriate words or actions. But I guess if a person agrees with the behavior, it is hard for them to fathom why people would be against them. But sometimes it's b/c they didn't look very far into it.

I like method dressing. It seems perfectly matched to the job of promoting a movie. Of course when you take a leap, sometimes you fall. Blake Lively's method dressing in the "It Ends With Us" tour, was a unicorn due to the on set and on tour turbulence. A course correction probably was not easy to attempt as I am guessing months go into the wardrobe planning for a tour. However, I feel that somewhere in Blake Lively's personal wardrobe were strong, structured, impeccably tailored garments that could be accessorized with hint of a floral for hair, jewelry or other accessories? That phrase attributed to Blake Lively, "grab your friends, wear your florals" made me imagine a wacky rom-com not a movie about DV. Publicists and stylists should take note of what went wrong and do better next time.

I think it's important to note that the rise of method dressing for press tours follows the success of method dressing for the annual Met Gala, which only became a thing in the last 10-12 years. For fashion brands, reports point to the Met Gala being the number-one most impactful red carpet event of the year in terms of brand visibility and virability. It is no wonder that the movie industry follows suit and adapts their press strategy to mimic this effect through fashion, to the point where it's almost becoming a given that any major film's female lead is now expected to go full-on method during press tours.

I really love the method dressing it makes me wanna go see the movie dressed up to match the movie but I feel like since it’s becoming more popular celebs are gonna start method dressing for films don’t necessarily call for method dressing . In my opinion method dressing only makes sense if it’s a action or fantasy type of movie where it’s has its own world or specific time period but it’s it’s like a movie like anyone but you it would make no sense to method dress cuz those are regular people charcters in a real world it doesn’t have a theme

Personally, i do think Blake Lively method dressing didn't work out - as an appealing successes of inspiration to the fans and as a marketing move - because i couldn't see a lot from her character. I was aware it was a floral thing but it looked that Blake made it 'Blake', not Lily Bloom. I couldn't buy the idea there and even now. In the movie Lily's style was messy and "thrown away"; It was not strong, beauty or even remarkable. I saw Margot as Barbie *offscreen* through fashion (when she was promoting the film), I saw Zendeya as Tashi in Challangers and ALSO i saw her perfectly as Chani in Dune. As a consummer it helped me - and added - in the overall experience when i watched thoses movies. It's definitely not an easy thing.

You said Halle Bailey became the second Disney princess actress to do method dressing, but I'd argue that ALL Disney princess actresses have done it (maybe not Emma Watson, or at least not effectively). Lily James did a good deal of dressing like Cinderella at the premieres, same with Naomi Scott and Jasmine. Liu Yifei wore a gown with a phoenix border design at the Hollywood premiere of Mulan. It was actually these live action Disney movies that first made me notice the trend of method dressing, but Margot Robbie obviously stole the show during Barbie's promo tours.

I definitely think that Barbie has been the most successful when it comes to method dressing. Though I did not care for the live action The Little Mermaid, I did enjoy the red carpet looks. I wish the red hair that Halle Bailey wore for the press tour and premiers had been the "Ariel" hair as it was a much richer and flattering shade of red than that used in the film.
