Brought back many happy memories seeing this. Used to be a commercial engraver, wish I'd never left it

Couldn't agree less with Schellenzaehler. Although we have CNC engraving machines, lasers and large format routers, we also have about 20 x pantograph engraving machines including a Deckel. The 100 year old engineering suits more accurately an industrial niche that we service - much better than the CNC machines. The most versatile in our view being the British TAYLOR HOBSON, followed by the French SCRIPTA. The best engineered by far that we have would be the Italian PEAR. We don't have a VMT 2D, but have no problem with copies - the British ALEXANDER (which was a direct copy of the Deckel), we have seems to be a better machine than the DECKEL. G'day from Australia.

Peter Cooper , i have no problems with copies, i never said the Deckel is the best machine. I have a Deckel G1l because i got one cheap and near at my home, there are a lot of good and very good other branded engraving machines out there. No machine is so good that somebody could not build a better one, espacially whith 50 years (ore more) time for improvements. Ok, in special cases, If you have easy flat surfaces to engrave, you can be much quicker and exact enough with your manual machine. I have in my shop 2 Isel routers that run 3d shapes, they are not the highest precision machines, but i am very interested how you engrave such stuff on one of your panthographes. A good friend of mine have a engraving shop, only one of his Scriptas is left in his shop, but he use it not any more, all his new machines run with cnc. Time is money, he can run more than one machine at the same time, so he have a higher income. Ok its your choice, in Australia you can work like you want, and if want to do it with hand engraving, its no problem. ; -) All the best to Australia !

I guess it depends on each person's requirements. We also have 6 x CNC machines that we use for the long run jobs. As you say once they are set up, you can feed more than one at a time. However we have found that there is not a huge benefit timewise, as we still require labour to feed the machines, unpack and pack. The pantos, (I have about 23 of these) are used for the very short run jobs. Because we have to work to about 0.1mm tolerence, the set up time for this work needs to be painstaking, and takes a while each time we run a product. Because I have been able to pick up pantos very cheaply, they are set up for just one particular repeat job - and so we eliminate the set-up times, (apart from the initial one), and as you say - time is money. If you're ever in Perth, Western Australia - drop in, and I'll show you what I mean. The factory looks like a cross between a men's shed and a museum - but we manage to still make an income, (have the same economic realities as most of the world). Best wishes for 2017.

Forgot to ask. Is your friend's Scripta an SR 210 ? (great machine - I have just one). Does he want to sell it? What country is it in, (we have bought pantos from UK in the past). Regards, Peter Cooper COOPER ENGRAVING, Perth Western Australia

Your machine Is a Copy of the Deckel G1L (Friedrich Deckel, Munich, Germany) I use my G1L only for Hobby, with a CNC retrofit and also manual. Sorry, but for commercial use i´d never buy your 100 year old design. How much cost your machine an how many of them you sold ? Greets from Germany

Hi there. I also have a Deckel G1L. Tell me about your CNC retrofit if you have the time. Thanks

King Fish, hi where do you come from?

King Fish , for the 3 axis my UHU-Servocontrollers work very well, with electrocraft e240 motors, but in US i would prefer the stronger Ameteks as Servo Motors. For one of my Isel CNC-router i use the cheap Leadshine 542 stepper-controllers, with the right motors you can use these instead of a servo solution , its much cheaper than servos! My Spindlehead is a fast running head of an Deckel FP1, with a home made adapter to the G1L. This setup is not for use with 20mm roughing mills, its more for small parts, making small chips. For rough milling i have a non cnc Dckel FP1 style mill. I am a hobbyist, so i have the time and i will not damage my more than 50 years old mill, so i do not so heavy cuts. Spare parts for these machines are horrible expensive.

Nice. Did you make up these yourself ? I agree the G1L should not be used in heavy cutting . What type of software do you use to control the motion?
