Thanks for the good advise, Sage! I broke my ankle about 10 days ago. Had surgery and 2 titanium screws. A little frustrating having to cancel all my autumn races, especially since I was in my all time top running shape. Now I will have to start from scratch, but I will listen to you and try to come back very slowly and carefully.

Sage, your a pro runner, it's your living, play it safe and get an x-ray, that way it takes the worry away and you will know for sure what's going on! Sometimes these things happen for a reason. Good luck with the recovery. As always listen to your body and get professional help when you need it! As a runner for over 40 years + for me preventing injury becomes a lot more important as I age and its always on the front of my mind with whatever I do. Good luck my friend.

Thanks for providing this video, Sage. I'm coming back from hip flexor tendonitis which I then did too much, too fast and got a shin splint. Had to take 7 weeks off from running to heal and missed Boston as a result. The old stationary bike helped get me through the downtime, and I definitely agree on the PATIENCE piece. That cannot be stressed enough!

Hi Sage, new to your channel and late to this video. I hope your recovery was successful. Sorry to hear you were going through that injury-- I found your video because I am going through the same thing right now in terms of being in recovery--physically and mentally missing being out and active. Have been a long distance walker/power-walker for a while and then was a beginner runner up until this October. I royally messed myself up with the common mistake which you mentioned: too much too soon. Can't even go back to walking right now! I'm looking forward of going through your channel to get myself back on track the safe way. Thanks for making this helpful and encouraging video to do it right. I will be trying my best to be patient above all else.

Hey Sage, attempted to climb mt. blanc this summer (failed due to bad weather conditions). I was actually in Chamonix only weeks before you. In need of a new goal to keep my motivation up I'm attempting my first half marathon (hopefully) soon. Just wanted to throw out there that your training talks helped me out a lot with keeping my work outs fun and injury free. You're the most knowledgeable youtuber on running in my opinion. So thank you, keep the good work up, and hope you'll recover soon.

Just got back from an injury on my foot 3,5 weeks of no running and a very easy week to start. Got a marathon October 18th so it came at the worst moment. Really taking a little risk going back at it so fast but i want to be prepared. Good luck Sage !

Hey Sage, I fully understand you. Injuries are so frustrating, but may also be a blessing in disguise (at least that is the best way to view them). I suffered a stress fracture at the fibula head in February and didn't return to proper running before 12 weeks. I am now about to run the Berlin marathon and probably had my best preparation ever, with a couple of PRs along the way. A word of caution though: I was exercising on the bike a lot while injured and didn't feel any pain. But the calf muscles are attached to the fibula and biking, even though it was pain free, had actually slowed down my recovery by constantly having the muscles pulling on the fibula. I am sure that you will come out stronger of this injury. Take care and be patient.

Good choice for an entry road bike. Looked at your rides on Strava. Good going. My bike crash a few months ago got me running again (trail) as a way of recovering. I enjoy the dynamic motion on the trail, plus the scenery and exploration. Thanks for your videos, started watching them while I was stuck in an arm sling for 8 weeks.

I injured my knee the same week as Cage, talk about a coincidence, there must be a bad runner omen going on lol... Thanks for the tips Sage, totally understand where you are coming from.. I took up mountaineering/hiking to fill the void myself and Im loving it!, Cant wait to get back to my running though I nearly had my sub 20min 5km goal in grasp.. Well I guess it's something to look forward to while I heal.. Hope you heal as fast as you run Sage! :D

Hope you recover well. I am a total fan of yours. I totally relate to your clumsiness issue. I am the most uncoordinated clumsy person around and managed to run injury free for 40 years except for sprained ankles-a clumsiness issue which I did almost annually during my high mileage running years. I did a lot of bike riding during those rehab periods. Unfortunately I am having Achilles tendinitis issues now I think because of a bad ankle sprain back in high school that did not heal completely right and I run asymmetrically on account of that. I am 58 years old so I managed to go a long time. I still run but I have to be more careful about pace and distance these days.

Great advice! I came from cycling to running and it was a seamless transition. The bike can still give you a great workout (esp if you do hill repeats on the bike), while exploring places a little further than you can run.

Your remark on heartrates (bike vs running) is actually quite funny. I have a cycling background, but started running when I met my wife 8 years ago because she was a runner. Since we have kids, running is our primary sport (it takes less time), but the heartrates are still higher than when I used to bike. I still use the bike when I feel my muscles are getting too tired from the the running (shin problems etc), and to get complete weeks of recovery. The muscles can recover because I manage to control the intensity a lot easier on the bike. Cardiovascular you don't lose a lot, I do need a lot more time on the bike for the same effort than on running shoes. You do lose some speed though... good luck!

Have been watching a lot of your videos and really appreciate your insights and teaching. At 58 I just did my first marathon (running against strong winds with gusts up to 45kph for the first 27km and then picking up a stress point at the 20km mark on the outside of my left foot due to running on a different road camber to usual and laces too tight - moan) and now I'm looking at doing another in 8 weeks (have had two light weeks with cross training and one run). But my question is, how do you manage all the training (6 days a week) when, like me, you walk 8-12km a day and sometimes more in steel caps on your job?

Hi Sage! What about doing some Vo2max workouts while recovering ? These are usually low milage workouts so quite adequate at that point of time. Can you give us a focus on different types of Vo2max workouts ? (short 20x 30s/30s repeats, longer repeats like 8x 1km, and so long...) And what type of Vo2max workout you usually go for?
@ChrisJohn_4449 жыл бұрын
Ya, it's good not to try to push back into it too soon. You're doing the right thing, though, by active resting the joint, with low impact - increasing blood flow to the area and strengthening the surrounding muscles are good ways to expedite recovery. The good thing about your injury is that it's not the product of repetitive stress. And, assuming there's no swelling, bruising and/or decreasing mobility, patella fracture is very unlikely.

A bike is an exelent way to keep in shape while you recover from an injury. Personally, I like to box on the running days off.

Any advice for a rolled ankle? I rolled mine on my run Monday morning on a street to sidewalk jump transition. I think its a light sprain. I was going to give it a week and see how it feels at that point. Thanks for any advice.

Alot of people run on a to hard surfaces. This will "kill" your legs, back and knees. Take some of your runs oftrack (grass, mud and other soft trails) you will not become a slow runner as many believe. a injured runner is slower than a healthy runner..
