Dr. J: We’ve been talking about ways to ask for recommendations. In this lesson, we’ll look at questions with “where?”
John: Dr. Jill, I need to buy some camping equipment. My family wants to camp at the beach this summer.
Dr. J: That sounds like fun. Do you have a tent?
John: No. Where can I buy a tent around here?
Dr. J: Notice that John used this pattern with where:
Where can I buy (something) around here?
John: I could also say, “Where can I find a camping store around here?”
Where can I find (something) around here?
Dr. J.: You live near the mall, right? I know just the place for camping gear. There’s a big store there called Camper’s Pro Shops. It’s not too expensive and they have all the latest tent models.
John: Really, there are new kinds of tents?
Dr. J: Yes, they have some you just fill with air. They pop up without any poles!
John: That sounds a lot easier than the tents I used before.
Dr. J: Where are you going to go camping?
John: The national seashore at Assateague.
Dr. J: Then I have another recommendation for you - bring bug spray. There are lots of mosquitoes there!
John: Let’s try making a question. Use the word “where” to ask for “a good bookstore.” Pause the video to consider your answer.
Dr. J: Here is one answer:
Where can I find a good bookstore?
John: And that’s Everyday Grammar!
