Hi Dr Dan. This is the Belgian version of the Dutch tv show "Beste Zangers" (best singers in English). Every season, 7 singers are invited. They come from many genres of music, and its a mix of settled names and upcoming stars. Each episode, one of them is in the spotlight and the other 6 each pick a song from that persons repetoire (or a song that has a special meaning to him/her) and covers it. So it is more like an ode to the person in the spotlight. Love the love, keep it up!

Who'd argue against Pink. This girl has more complete vocal chops, better interpretive skills, edgier, emotes deeper and a more noticeable stage and vocal presence without being an international pop superstar (and that's saying something). The Christ of Rock N Roll gives this performance an A+. 🤣

She also did a song from the opera Carmen: Habanera during her participation of Beste Zangers. The Dutch Show where several singers from different genres sing together and with each other. In each episode one of the central place and there the others sing a song, which is made or has a meaning to them! In Belgium its called: Liefde voor Muziek

I have seen her live multiple times and it’s unbelievable!! She has a lot of energy, mixed with perfect vocals and the way she interacts with the audience.. THE BEST EVER. I really hope she goes worldwide soon and you all get the chance to see her live

Great reaction! This show is from Belgium television. I think it is a rip off (in a good way) of 'Beste Zangers', a Dutch tv show what is giving a few singers the opportunity to showcase their style and way of performing to their colleagues and perform songs that are special to the person/performer that is in the spotlight that specific episode. Davina is one of the best singers in the Netherlands and Belgium. She is a self made woman through KZbin and still didn't make it to the world stage although she deserves it. One of her top notch performances must be; The power of water - live @ Eurovision Song Contest performing as an half time artist. The quality of that whole performance and act is just great and showcases het quality. Please check it out, you will be amazed! Keep up the good work and greetings from Holland 🇳🇱

After Pink listened to her version she really started to work the craft. She was 17 when Pink heard her sing the cover. If you want a treat listen to the version Pink heard, she you will see very little difference in the lyrics. Yes she has grown and developed and she is about 24 or 23 during this performance. She is 27 now and well on her way now for sure.

The show is called "Beste zangers van Nederland" (best singers of the Netherlands), it's a show where different generations of Dutch artists. Veterans with already a great career, new talents and artists of a "unknown" genre (like metal, classic or opera). Every episode, one of them sits in the spotlight. The other will cover one of the songs of the artist in the spotlight, or a song that is special to that artist. There is absolutely no competition between the artists, it's all about having fun and inspire each other.

Davina has great performance presence and is able to connect with the audience with her amazing energy and musicality. However, albeit she is generally sustained, I think that her voice has a undertone of constant breathiness and hoarseness right through her range and as you say, Dan, it also sounds labour intensive which I suspect will be a problem in the future if she doesn't address it technically. Other voices placed further back in the vocal tract like Chakira and sometimes PInk, don't give me the impression that the tone is breathy or unclean, they just play with various colours with their flexible placement and their soft singing is impeccable with a more forward natural, speech level placement. I would be wary of emulating her sound if I were a singing student.

One thing that strikes me is that singing with a complete healthy techqnique may lead to career longevity and prudent for a long sustained hectic tour schedule but the masses are sadists and they want blood. Very often breaking the rules of healthy singing may cost the singer more vocal dollars but it does add more excitement into the sound and performance. This is where the blood is drawn for the excitement of the masses. The trick though is to pace yourself and plan in advance to place those "exciting adventurous" sounds and lines in the perfomance or during the night so that these "unhealthy" deliveries are done sparsely and judiciously just enough to satisfy the crowd and create the moments. This strategy can only be accomplished if the singer knows the rules and has good healthy technique because only if one knows the rules one can wisely break those rules. I think this performance was just singing one song or at the most a handful of songs so Davina has the luxury of spending more vocal dollars in contrast to being on a tour with at least 90 minutes singing every night. This is my mindset as to how to approach singing. When I just sing one song for a KZbin upload I have the luxury of going for it and produce more unhealthy sounds for the sake of the permanent legacy of the video uploaded. No way would I approach it the same way if I was on tour or sing a long list of songs in the one event.

@@TheProtestantPope What you suggest ie. pacing your energy and vocal health according to the vocal load you have in store is an excellent procedure and advisable even when you have a flawless technique. But my concern is that it's not a choice with Davina of when to sing in a healthy way or not.. She always has a hoarse quality to her voice. She either has some vocal damage already and that's why the breath is coming through or she has a congenital defect which means that it is her vocal characteristic but in that case she should see to limiting any future damage to her voice if she wants to have a long career.. What keeps her going and enables her to sing to the level she impressively does is her grit, musical energy and raw passion, which is also what might harm her in the long run. Janis Joplin started out as a vocally out of control, often hoarse sounding singer but her performances have never really been matched by another singer, copied yes, but not matched. She was amazing not only because her voice was so unique, her performances were also spetacular, out of this world for that time. The point I want to make is that as she went on, Janis, realized that with that amount of energy she could be in danger of future vocal damage and she also wanted more nuance to her singing, She started training properly and if you hear how she sings in her later recordings her voice is much cleaner, sharper and in focus than in her initial recordings... HOWEVER.. learining how to sing properly did not limit her impact with the audience. Her voical technique improved without losing any of her raw energy or without limiting any of her liberating emotional impact on the audience at all.. if anything it was enhanced because of her more focused sound and her ability to create more colours and dynamic nuance especially in quiet singing. Davina should think long term. Just think of Annie Lennox who was no stranger to letting out controlled belted notes and still sings in her 70s with the same energy as ever, Yet, her amazing voice hasn't lost any of it's original lustre and gorgeous healthy quality and strength

@@sarinarausa975 Janis has always been a bit of a Rambo singer but to be fair to her vocal pedagogy was nowhere as developed in her time than let's say the 1980s onwards. Janis' best vocal technique still falls short by today's standards. Janis is mostly known today for being a pioneer for females in rock/blues opening the doors who came after her. She is not really a master vocalist but rather a tremendous artist. On a sidenote you really should check Beth Hart who surpass Janis in almost every department if not all departments. Check out her live version of "Am I the One?" (live at Paradiso) that goes around 10 minutes long. Janis on steroids and much better vocal technique and pitch.

@@sarinarausa975 Janis Joplin was a great artist but she wasn't a technically great vocalist even in her latter years when you said she got better. She was a pioneer but by today's standards she is below the standard of what a vocalist should be measured by. For example Beth Hart surpassed Janis by a long mile technically, artistically and soulfully. Check out Beth Hart singing "Am I The One?" live at Paradiso. You will understand my point, I have not seen anyone come close to her primal emotional intensity.
