I have followed Lucy for 6 years or so. I am 75 years old and have been a musician all my life. In her videos, she dresses and acts the part, and most of all, the music never overwhelms her voice.....With Lucy, what you see is what you get !! One take, NO autotune... How do you know they are all one take? Only around 5% of what I upload to KZbin are one takes and there is nobody that can tell which is which. But you can tell autotune was never used except once when I recorded a Drake cover for robotic sound effect rather than pitch correction.

​@@patwelch8187 That's not what it means when people say "it was done in one take". That term is used when you only do one recording for the whole session rather than multiple takes where you then get the luxury of picking which take to upload to KZbin. For example I did take one and then I do take two and then take three and so on and I am happy with the fourth take. That means take 4 was the one that I upload to KZbin ignoring all the other takes which then just simply either gets deleted or stored for personal records. This is what it means when Karen Carpenter was known as one take Karen. This recording by Lucy could've been take 27 for all we know because she and her team were unhappy with the previous 26 takes. Nobody in the whole wide world would have known unless given this information by the people present during the recording. One take only definitely does not mean using one recording only without blending various takes or recordings into one unified recording or take. I am quite certain the visuals in this video by Lucy was not a live recording. She recorded the vocals separately and then recorded a video for uploading to Youtbe blending the audio and video togther. There is no way you can record this kind of audio clairty witrhout a microphone in front of you and it is a live recording. The mic for this recording would not be cheap either.

Hello Dr Dan, I love your vocal expertise, Lucy Thomas has a wonderful voice some say she has the best voice in the world for her age 19 years of age, she has just released her 5th CD it is called Beyond her best yet. There is some great songs on it, one of my favourite of all time is "A Whiter Shade Of Pale " she sings this in her low voice, a must for you to analyse, or "A Thousand Years " again in her low voice. she also sings duets with her younger sister one to hear is the "Prayer" it's so good. At last a fellow Australian reacting to Lucy! The other people making comments have covered most of it, Wilbur is correct in saying Lucy will be 20 on the 21st Feb and all her fans are waiting for the production of the musical "Rosie" in which Lucy will star. I hope to visit London for that flying out from Perth. I would recommend Hallelujah for a review, because it will give you a good idea of the potential Lucy has (that cover was done when Lucy was 16 from memory). Personally I think Lucy the nicest and best singer I have listed to in my long life!

What we have here is the emergence of a new star in the pop and musical theatre vocal world. Dr Dan thank you for your most insightful analysis. She has such a beautiful voice and is able to sing anything .Lucy is starring in a new Musical due to open in London next Autumn Written for her by award winning songwriter and owner of the record company Lucy is under Chris Broom ,Lucy was given a recording contract by Chris at 14 after Voice kids, she has released 5 albums to date. Incredible performance as always from Lucy. She has perfect pitch and control which is incredibly well developed for her age. When there is auto tune or post production changes they are usually obvious if subtle in developments in volume or tone in certain passages, no evidence of that here. Lucy has an incredible future ahead of her.

Welcome Dan to Lucy. 🙂 Nice that Lucy’s beautiful voice has reached around the World to Australia. 🌏🙃 Firstly I have seen Lucy sing this live up front close and personal. Plus I’ve seen live recordings. Live is usually a little different to the released songs. Lucy sings this real live virtually the same as this recording. Lucy is actually singing live here as she always does in her video recordings, however as with most videos I suspect the final track will be added, otherwise no need for a mixing studio or sound booth. But I’m only surmising, and could be wrong. Only Lucy's production team can answer. Lucy had a developed voice at age 13, and at 15 Lucy’s voice was already amazing. Lucy’s KZbin channel alone boasts over 70 songs, all incredible. It’s actually very exciting to listen Lucy right now! I’m still astonished by Lucy’s singing at 15. 😲 I recommend you look Lucy’s channel and select the songs you wish. But a couple for you to second look - ‘Broken Dreams’, ‘The Prayer’ for it's complexity, ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’, ‘At Last’, ‘Somewhere’, there are so many..... But I’d actually like you to analyse ‘Run’ aged 15. 🧐

@@DrDanRobinson Thank you Dan. Just listening Lucy is truly inspiring, and I’m no different to all that hear her. Lucy’s earliest videos are from aged 9 however I’d say her voice developed from aged 13, and you can find videos on KZbin with Lucy singing impressively at 13. I particularly love Lucy’s ballads from age 15 and 16. The song’s I suggested showcase Lucy’s voice, which I thought you might be interested in, but she has many. ‘Run’ when aged 15 always mesmerizes me and for this reason it would be personally interesting for a professional to break it down. It’s more of a home video performance and she is singing live. However unknown if it is raw or not. Lucy is due to lead the musical ‘Rosie’ in autumn 2024, so no question of her ability. To inform a little more Lucy is a charming and nice young lady, and Lucy also has a younger sister Martha 5 years younger than Lucy who is also a talented singer and sings duets with Lucy. Hence I suggested ‘The Prayer’, which when considering all and Martha’s young age is truly remarkable. Happy New Year 🎉

Great review. Welcome to the wonderful word of Lucy Thomas. She is the most perfect singer I know, with a not only a warm calm voice but also a warm modest personality. Even before she was discovered (13yo) she sang way beyond her age (and the artists she covered). Every one of her over 60 masterpieces is a joy to listen to. Pick any. You can't go wrong. Yeah, you ask for more Lucy songs and talk about classics from the sixties and seventies how about two of her latest covers, A whiter shade of pale or Bridge over troubled water? You won't be disappointed with either, or with any of the other 50 odd songs of hers you'll find at Lucy Thomas Music here on youtube. They are all fantastic and will probably blow you away. If you think this was good at 19, wait until you see what she was doing at 14 and 15, she is absolutely unbelievable. Run, Desperado, I'll never love again to name just three.

I'm pretty sure Lucy is singing "live" while it's of course possible to mime the lyrics, to reproduce her breathing at the same time, is in my opinion vertually impossible. I also find it difficult to believe that she can improve vocally. Her latest duet with her 14 year old sister Martha "Mary Did You Know?" It is definitely worth checking out. Also the Whitney Huston classic "Run To You" is yet another fantastic performance.

Lucy has been singing for a while now, check out her video when she was ten years old, Run, Snow patrol. She had good vibrato even at that early age. As far as Evergreen, my personal thought is she sings it better than Barbra. As you mentioned, Lucy has has such a smooth voice.

Dr Dan, it has been three months since you last evaluated Lucy’s vocal abilities. I would really appreciate you checking out some of her more recent KZbin videos. In particular, there are two recordings of Lucy singing live in Manchester last month. This addresses the issue of studio embellishment. I think it is likely that the audio recording of Evergreen was done separately in a recording studio and then Lucy sang the song again for the video filming. The live recordings resolve this potential criticism.

Good reaction. If you want to check out some other covers of older songs, Lucy has recently released Bridge Over Troubled Water and A Whiter Shade of Pale, both at the age of 19. She recently turned 20 in February. She has covered so many songs covering many genres including an Aerosmith song I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing. Hi Wilbur! Glad to see you are fully back from your 'sabbatical' on commenting. I give you full marks for this excellent resume/description of our beloved Lucy. I am on the same page as you are. Lucy is the best!! Many don't like us saying that but I am 75 years old and as far as I am concerned after hearing Lucy sing "Somewhere" 3 years ago, my ears have changed. I hear every shortcoming in other singers now because Lucy is now the gold standard of reference where the bar is very high and so far none have measured up to it.

Hi, I also just found (and already subscribed to) your channel while browsing Lucy Thomas reactions. I find it extremely interesting when you refer back to the "source material", in this case Barbra (also not far from a contemporary). So many "reactors" simply listen to a song and at the end simply say "wow" that was good. I sort of know that going in. It's the criticism that makes it worth hearing. That's the second definition of criticism in the Oxford Dictionary: 2. the analysis and judgment of the merits and faults of a literary or artistic work.

Dan. As far as I am aware there is no evidence that Lucy is co-producing Rosie - The Musical. She is only 19 with no known record of theatre experience. She has only just finished her education and has been working on songs and albums since she was 14. Wilbur Finnegan continually states, in his usual lengthy comments, about the co-production but when asked what evidence he has of this we hear nothing. He is no longer a member of the official fan club. 14:26 There was a recent debate within the members of the official fan club as to whether Lucy lip syncs to pre-recorded audio or whether it is a live recording. The result of this was inconclusive, nobody having inside knowledge of the process Lucy goes through. I think the favoured conclusion was it is a pre-recorded track. My own view was that I could not believe that Lucy (and her sister Martha) could produce repeatedly perfect singing. It appears to a layman like me to be seamless. As you say, only her production team know the answer to that one. She has her debut public concert in Manchester on March 5th. Perhaps someone can get a definitive answer. Not definitive by any means but I’ve watched all of Lucy’s 59 official and several unofficial videos many times and in addition 34 definitely live recordings in private homes, restaurants, public charity performances, The Voice kids rounds and street performances. My take is as a matter of course in her official videos Lucy sings live but there is obviously some post production, mixing and mastering etc. and occasionally, with a few of the more ambitious videos, occasionally and necessarily some lip sinking. One example of clear evidence of live singing by Lucy and Martha is near the end of “ The Prayer” where Martha had clearly struggled with one phrase during rehearsals but just about makes it in the recording and Lucy raises her eyebrows and gives Martha a subtle smile to say ‘told you you could do it’, that wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t live! As for the obviously live performances Lucy sings as well or better than in the official videos. in 14 instances singing with just a piano and in 2 with just a guitar accompaniment. Another example is 15 year old Lucy singing in a restaurant with a backing track and takes a phone call from her gran mid way through a performance, reassures her she will be home soon then gets straight back into the song! I’ve seen hundreds of live singers and bands over the years, even performed in front of upwards of 2000 people in the late 60s (!) I say, hand on heart, Lucy is the most enjoyable singer I’ve heard in my 73 years.

Hi Stuart, with all great new comers there is always sceptics and discredit. The music industry is full of remastered enhancements and trickery, especially in pop music when it matters more what a singer looks like rather than if they can sing. Even in the movies the scene isn’t taken in one shoot, and we only see the final best take. Evidence works both ways, so it is unfair to suggest either way unless there are facts! Correct Lucy is 19, with no known public record of theatre experience, and she’s not done theatre. She’s a singer. However she is due to star in the musical ‘Rosie’ predicted to open in autumn 2024, and I’ll be going from Wigan. Lucy has however done live stage singing, mainly at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. Lucy co-producing the musical ‘Rosie’ I doubt that, and there is no information (as I’ve seen) that she is, or isn’t. Chris Broom is the producer, but Chris and Lucy have been working together from the start and Lucy is the lead singer, and Chris has stated he’s writing the songs for Lucy to sing, so I’m sure Lucy will be giving valuable input on it’s production. But that doesn’t suggest co-producing. Understand that these more professional videos are just that - a video. We see only Lucy singing because that’s all we need to see and hear. A simple video of Lucy. No artist is going to release flawed videos with errors, so of course the final release will be seamless. Nevertheless I’ve seen blunder recordings where Lucy and Martha messed up, and they were both singing live together during the shoot. It’s much easier to sing than lip sync, and I’m sure Dr Dan can see that Lucy is singing. Many singers have and do lip sync, but usually because the venues don’t allow live performances or are not insured or equipped for live. However some because they cannot sing live. Lucy does not mime or lip sync to pre-recorded audio. Nor is Auto-Tune used. Pointless to use Auto-Tune on a video, and it’s generally unreliable. Lucy sings live in the videos, but that’s not to say a final vocal track isn’t used. Mostly likely the final vocal for these more professional videos have been recorded in a sound booth and mixed. But only Lucy’s production team mixing the song know exactly what’s been done or enhanced. This is normal practice for all singers, but sometimes even the singer doesn’t know how it’s been mixed. Unless a singer is singing live without a microphone stood outside on a box, filmed on independent camera, then a voice has in some way been enhanced. Whether that be a mic, an acoustic room, a sound booth, pitch correction, or editing and mixing. All singers use these methods, but nobody is questioning Michael Bublé, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, etc, etc. I’ve seen a lot of Lucy’s live recordings, and I’ve seen Lucy sing this song live close up, and I’ve spoken with Lucy, and there is evidence on the official fan club. I’m also front row at Lucy’s March 5th Manchester concert. I suggest you come to this concert and see all live for yourself, it will be a great performance I’m sure. A definitive answer. All artists will release their best performance on their video, whether that is manipulated or re-done until correct. So many singers never sound exactly the same live, and many singers deliberately sing live a song differently to mask that. We shouldn’t expect a singer to sing live exactly the same as in a video (their best performance) from a long time ago. Lucy’s tones and pitch and vibrato singing this live was virtually the same as in this video. Lucy is the real deal and she sung it beautifully.

Whilst I do not have the benefit of your Knebworth experience I have seen those recordings of her singing live and from that I can tell that there is little difference between that and her recordings. I’m afraid I lost the plot halfway through your explanation about live singing and recordings etc. You are fortunate to have firsthand knowledge which the majority of us do not, even Dr Dan is unsure what methods are used. I look forward to March 5th when I can hear for myself and hope I can listen to Lucy in the future and forget about how the end result was achieved and just enjoy the end product. I hope Lucy enjoyed the flowers you gave her.

True live singers sing live regularly and go with the flow and the motion, and sing with faults and mistakes (character). It will be different every time. When we then watch them live they sound the similar with all the flaws. Song videos generally are of the singer at their very best attempt, from a comfortable relaxed sound booth and then mixed, concentrating on just that one song. Then when listening live in concert, and they’re singing many different songs and some songs years old, or if nervous, or with different instruments, it’s expected it may sound slightly different or not as good to the video. Some producers might even enhance the video recording vocals, which is common with pop songs. We all know Lucy is the fabulous singer. Some of Lucy’s live songs were slightly different to her videos, which as explained is to be expected. However some live songs sounded exactly the same. Evergreen was virtually the same, with pitch and tones and vibrato, except Lucy didn’t hold the last note for as long. Which I’ll put down to embarrassment, as it was a very intimate performance and to hold a note for 16 seconds might have felt too long................. I don’t know how Lucy’s videos are produced. Normally vocals would be recorded in a sound booth and studio mixed then layered into the video, but it’s possible if they have the correct room to record in that. So what we see and hear could be the actual vocals, but I’d suspect the final finished vocals are later layered in. But Lucy is singing on the videos, just that singing session probably isn’t that on the video. Lucy’s not lip syncing in the videos, and most are done in one take. There are visible traits with singing, for example watch Lucy’s throat when vibrato. Impossible to fake that and it’s easier to actually sing than lip sync. Correct Stuart best to enjoy the end product as we would do listening to Barbra and all others. 😊 If we scrutinize Lucy then we must judge all the world’s best singers the same, because that’s the way of the music industry.

@@ChrisScott0 I’ve always wanted to believe that Lucy is not lip syncing as I could not believe she could be that good, not forgetting Martha also. Those vocal coaches who have reacted to Lucy often comment on the control she has over her voice, including breath control, vibrato. They are watching as well as listening and are commenting on what they see as much as what they hear. I accept that tweaks may be made in post production. In the recent discussion in the fan club it was argued that as the audio on the CD was identical to that on the video that it could not have been recorded ‘live’. Like you I do not know how the videos are produced and in the end, as we have said it doesn’t really matter in the end. We know Lucy can produce the goods when required. I will be on the end of Row E in a wheelchair so you can’t miss me. Robbie Dunbar tells me that Chris Broom has told him that is the best row. Apparently all the VIPs and invited guests will be there. I’m just an addition tacked on the end, not being among the expensive seats nor an invited guest. C’est la vie.
