1:20 The beginning of Whitney's decline was not the early 90s but post mid 90s. The early 90s was still part of Whitney's vocal prime. Consider this for evidence. Whitney's 1994 live performance at the American Music Awards of I Loves You, Porgy/And I Am Telling You/I Have Nothing is widely regarded as the pinnacle of her live performance and the yardstick by which any live performance is measured maybe even in any genre. The performace I dub as the second coming I have seen the Lord performance. Regal, sublime, flawless, spirit filled and without any compare.

Right. Whitneys prime was from 1985-1995/1996. Whitney toured before her first album release, after her first album, after her second album, after her 3rd album, after the Bodyguard. Then there’s countless television performances and her amazing concert for the troops. Saying her prime was in 1994 is kind of ridiculously uninformed. Whitney is the greatest of the vocal trinity for multiple reasons-diction, melisma, resonance, power-but what sets her even farther apart is her live performances and her stage presence. Whitney is the greatest vocalist of all time… also my guy needs to know that Mariah wasn’t a factor in the 80’s. Whitney was. Celine wasn’t. Whitney was. And the major reason for Whitneys vocal decline was her over touring and her cigarette smoking.

@@TheProtestantPope No that’s untrue. Her vocal damage was from her over touring and her cigarette smoking. That’s what damages 99% of her voice. Her drug usage caused little to no damage to her voice. That’s from her vocal coach himself.

@@jobuck879 You seem to be discounting the effects marijuana smoking on the vocal cords. Ciggies are bad but added on top of that ganja then it is a double whammy. Sinatra ruined his voice with heavy usage of ciggies and alcohol but he still managed a very good career. Whitney's abuse was worse than Sinatra and Sinatra smoked a lot and by that I mean a real lot.

Thank you Dr. Dan, for this sensitive, respectful analysis that celebrates Whitney’s brilliant career and this wonderful performance while also informing and educating us in vocal health. One thing I was very impressed with was the band and how they follow her. I’m sure most of it is well rehearsed but there are moments where she is reacting to the audience and in turn the band is reacting to her thereby making it such a personal and immersive experience for everyone, the singer, musicians and audience, is involved in the creation of the performance … just amazing!

Good analysis - it’s helpful to hear because so many singers feel they have to push it all the time. Plus lifestyle issues that plagued her. She was starting to sing in smaller segments which chop up her phrasing here. She does seem stressed too. It’s in her eyes. I find it sad to hear- even though she is still great. It’s just not what she wants to express and so much energy goes into covering it up. Many singers have done that when they get older, but Whitney was still young here. ( well, young to me, lol).

The main problem here IMO is the lack of training prior to that event. Whitney went on a world tour a few months after that and she delivered STELLAR vocals nights after nights. And she gave stronger performances of this song too. She also sang that song at Arista Anniversary in 2000 and her voice was much clearer. And concerning that particular performance, most of her vocal choices are instinctive. Her vocals would have been VERY different if she had to sing it again the next day, especially after the climax😉

The fact that people were expecting Whitney to sound like how she did 10years prior is crazy to me. None of the other stars who started with Whitney and still here. They cant sing like they used to even though they are healthy. Bteotd she had aged just like everyone else and so did her voice.

Yes both Mariah and Celine had debut albums in 1990 with Celine in the 80s only having French albums but was not yet marketed or breaking into the English speaking markets. But Whitney did emerge in the 80s.

Whitney lifting her shoulders isn't indicating strain, she did that alot in the 80s as well. She sings with her body ALOT. Also her decline was in 92, 93 and 94? The year she made i will always love you and i have nothing? Nah, it was around 96/97. But hey if you think that watch her "i have nothing" performance at the billboards in 93 and the "i have nothing, porgy and i am telling you" medley in 94.

Whitney didn't have nodules. She had damage from smoking cigarettes. Her vocal performance was on point this is 20 years in and after an 8 leg world tour! There was no decline at this point but there was a change her voice got stronger and darker like her moms.

@@dm3889 I recall her mom stating she had nodules, but I don't remember anything about surgeries. They seem to have healed on their own, which often happens. Pavarotti had nodules early in his career that just disappeared after some time.

Mariah Carey is not an 80's artist. Her first single, album and TV performance where in 1990. The major 80's female vocalists are Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand. All these ladies had vocal issues mainly because of too much work and mostly singing very vocally demanding songs. Celine lived a healthy life and also had vocal issues. Whitney was often doing concerts when she was sick and should have been resting in bed. This is not Whitney's best IWALY performance, but still better than most singers can do in their best days.

Though elements of truth in your analysis, I personally think you haven't approached this performance from the right perspective and Whitney here though not in her best voice, delivers a performance which is an insight to her musicality, emotional delivery and skill. Moreover, it seems you had already made your notions about everything Beforehand. Everybody knows about her downfalls. Talking about precautionary measures are amazing and kts good of you to point that out but to sum it up, I feel you missed the beauty of thus performance by focusing on that too much! Peace ✨

Celine dion shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as whitney houston and will due respect whitney was still the best in the 90s and respectfully whitney doesn't need a vocal coach to disect her voice who could only dream of singing as good as her. As a huge whitney fan i get protective of legacy.

Of the "vocal trinity," Whitney is my favorite, but I have no problem acknowledging Celine as a vocalist of similar caliber. You've probably dug deep into Whitney's performance history, and found feats of excellence that exceed even the ones the general public consider to be her best. However, if you haven't done the same with respect to Celine, and you appreciate great singing voices irrespective of race, culture, nationality, or genre, then I highly encourage you to do so. For starters, have you heard Celine scat? Have you, in any fashion, appraised the vocal strengths, stylistic habits, and examples of musical versatility that set her apart? Have you at least seen a compilation of her peak vocals, or, better yet, her rare or less popular vocal gems? I have. And it's clear to me how generally underestimated she is in the fan circles of Whitney and Mariah.

@@foreighteen7797 Whitney will always be the ultimate 'out of this world' great singer/performer for me, but I too acknowledge that there are other greats too. Celine doesn't have Whitney's amazing Soul, charisma and phenomenal stage presence, but mention Celine when talking about Whitney is ok though. Whitney, Mariah & Celine are called The Vocal Trinity for good reasons.

Of all the Whitney performances you could have chosen, you choose a performance around the time of Whitney vocal decline. If you really wanted to celebrate Whitney true vocal abilities or range. etc you could have went early 90s - Bodyguard era key example being the AMA Medley. Regardless Whitney was as beautiful then as she was in her peak but a little bit of a dis-service picking this performance if you ask me. If your going to do something, do it right.

Even the AMA medley wasn't peak Whitney. She was hoarse during that performance and in 1994 she was worn out for the most part.
