Thank you for this brilliantly positive video! I know all about that insecurity, it has stopped me from taking my singing any farther than two steps away from the shower for most of my life. Only now, as I approach my 40th birthday, am I taking it out into the world, and with the emotional feedback I'm getting from it I wish I would have stepped out of my comfort zone, or should I say extended my comfort zone, 25 years ago. But let's all radiate that positive reenforcement, so that we can make sure as many of these hidden talents get uncovered as possible!

8:23 - yes YES!!! When I was in a band our singer was great with classical tutoring but she was mortally afraid of criticism. I always told her that everyone may have an opinion but it's down to her to assign value to those opinions, because not everyone knows what they're talking about or has her/our best interests at heart. If it's a dig in a comment from some randomite...who cares? Yeah, it sucks that you can't get applause from everyone - and no-one never will for many reasons - but it doesn't always matter as long as you feel that you did the best you could do. But if a comment is constructive criticism from someone encouraging with more experience than you then assign value to that feedback based on the level of that experience and heed accordingly. This is so, SO IMPORTANT, especially when someone's not confident and feeling very vulnerable by putting themselves out there for everyone to judge. I'm not a great bass player and I know that I'll never be a great bass player so I didn't particularly care when people criticised my playing, not that many people did because most people don't notice bass players without stand-out talent. I was just grateful and happy to play with great friends who are more talented than I was and we got to record four releases and support bands that I'd never otherwise of shared a stage with in venues that I'd never have seen from that perspective. I'm still flattered now when people upload our songs to KZbin (but not so much when it's the full album 'cos we're still trying to shift those, ha). I'm very pleased that I found your channel RVA and please, keep up the good work!

Just think of all the unknowns out there that are getting noticed through this medium. Imagine all those lost in my generation when we had to go to a studio or church or HS chorus and discovered by chance...LA was the hot seat for musicians......I was a touring lead singer/ lead guitarist ...I was a high tenor and loved singing to an audience especially stadiums...nothing like that sound...my father hated me doing this. Lil fun story that this reminded me of, when I was super little (like barely old enough to not use a car seat) me and my family were in the car heading somewhere and listening to “courtesy of the red white and blue” by Toby Keith, (awesome song btw if you’re from America you’ll love it) and there’s a line that goes “...and we’ll stick a boot in your ass....”. And me being as young and naive as I was thought no one else could hear me and decided to sing ONLY that line. Turns out my brother sitting in the front seat, heard me, and turned the volume down right as that line came and everyone starting busting up laughing. Long story short from that day forward I NEVER sang to anybody, not even myself. And only recently (I’m 18) have I been able to conquer this weird trauma and sing to myself. Still haven’t sang in front of anyone but we’ll see if that changes. Hope y’all found this interesting?😂

You're so right, one nasty comment was all it took me to stop singing completely for almost a decade... And before that I was really sure in my voice, I loved singing, I did it all the time, I knew I was good. After that I just started doubting every single note I sang, it was so stressful that eventually, I gave up completely. I'm starting again now, but it will take me some time to build up to the place I was at before I stopped. Hopefully I'll get there :) Guess what I was trying to say is don't listen to haters, the only opinion that matters is yours. And if everyone else enjoys your singing, and only one person has something bad to say about it, it's most likely that that one person is just jealous.

Good point that about someone will always be judging or critizicing you and how one should ignore it. That was my biggest challenge to overcome, took my first 30 something years to sing publicly (even though the first one was a karaoke in a big family reunion). That was the point when I kinda grew up and realized that it doesn't matter if I screw up a bit or if someone doesn't like it (I knew my pitch was fine besides those probable screw ups). Three and a half years ago I asked my friend if I could go and try lead singing for them and see if it works out. About two months later we had our first gig. I was afraid that I'd get really anxious before the gig, but it never came, I just went up and enjoyed it because I had decided to do so (and I knew I/we can do it, cause we had practiced enough). Later I have found that I STILL get the butterflies, but instead of my stomach they're in my throat (sort of, my throat dries like **ll), so there's some work to do still. To sum up this (overly) long comment, if I, a terribly shy person, was able to overcome my "stage fright", most other can do it. Just convince yourself, that if YOU are enjoying it, then nothing else matters 💪
