Heart wrenching! what a song... Ya know Morissette did this at one of her recent shows, and damn near broke down during it, She has "Connection" to those great Lyrics!

Billie Eilish is one of the few artists who doesn’t use pitch correction or autotune. Her performance at the Grammys was heart wrenching!

I also liked her performance at the Oscars, but verse 2 was deleted - so that puts the GRAMMY performance ahead of the Oscar performance for me - and she looked so cute [I'm saying that as a 70 yr. old admirer - she captured the mid-1960's Barbie look].

One thing I noticed about this song was how melody notes kind of mirror the lyrics to reinforce the mood. Within the first 2 notes it resolves to the tonic, but the phrases don't end in as much of a resolved place. This is like how at the very beginning of these verse phrases the lyrics point to her being in a psychologically comfortable position, but by the end of these lines she is not at all in as good a place. For example, going from floating to falling down, from knowing to not being sure, from being alive to being not real, etc. Maybe the moving away from musical resolution adds to the feeling of uncertainty.

Finneas mentioned that in an interview and many others have also remarked that deeper play.

Billie said she had this idea watching that famous clip of Barbie when Barbie was falling down her house .. and then immediately she wrote the line and the title “what was I made for?” And she understood the purpose of that song in the clip with Barbie and the old woman. Perfect for the movie but also for our life .. with always ups and downs.

I'm glad you commented on the lack of resolution at the end. I love how the song withholds that V7 chord from you until the very last line. And then it never resolves to the I. It really fits the themes of the song -- the sense of longing and searching, but the hope that she'll find it some day.

She always had such a beautiful and emotive voice but nowaday it's just on another level. She must have been working hard and it shows. Stunning

I remember you reviewing WWAFAWDWG, Billie's first studio album and considering it to be quite a unique piece of art, and I think you were much less impressed with HAPPIER THAN EVER. Now I hope you will not linger [ a reference to the CRANBERRIES song which I don't think you reviewed ] and will review Billie and Finneas's "HIT ME HARD AND SOFT" - this is, I believe, a mesmerizingly and astonishingly amazing album, and if you have heard anything like it, you'll have to make mention of that in your analysis. You loved - I believe - Billie's cover of Peggy Lee's "Fever" and also her "What Was I Made For?"; I think there's a couple songs on this new album that you may either love or like very much. But Finneas's production may blow you away - I'm not sure to where!

Seriously ? "that vocal disapear..." did it appear anyday ??? this singer is hugely overrated ! how did she managed to be so famous ???
@Alex-lr2je10 ай бұрын
😂😂 you don’t even know what you are talking about .. touch grass .. she is the best .. the other pop artists with horrendous and dumb pop compositions are overrated that for sure .. not her finally something different and great .. she also proved she could sing this song in different vocal styles and with more her chest voice and belts but she wants to convey emotions and that vocal more indie delivery is on purpose. Again you don’t know anything about her artistically. She was also the songwriter, producer, vocal producer and engineer and mixer of the song!
