And he did all that with a lesion on his vocal cord. He said in an interview that he found a way to work around the friction. But he had his ENT doctor on set. David Draiman is an amazing singer. He was trained to be a cantor. He obviously chose another path. Lol.

Best way to describe David Draimen’s voice is to compare it to a car engine, I think. But not just any car engine. We’re talking a big bore Lamborghini V-12. When he’s idling at low registers, it’s this throaty, grumbling basso grow covered in velvet, then at cruising speeds (mid range) it’s this rich bellow that just keeps going on and on with little to no effort... and then he floors the throttle and it’s a musical shriek from the depths of the abyss. Listening to a Disturbed song is a bit like watching a high end super car doing hot laps on a race circuit.

Yeah, David Draiman was very sick that night with the flu. He'd requested no tuning anyway, but they had it ready to go just in case. If you watch carefully, you can actually see the moment they turn it on. He notices and shoots a dirty glance at the sound guy. XD Honestly the official video is much better. He said when the idea struck him, he locked himself in the studio and recorded take after take, slowly locking in the arrangement and feel. It was the longest studio session he'd ever done, and when he was finished, the rest of the band and the producer were just stunned and haunted and knew it was something really special.

Dunno, isn't the purpose of a vocal coach reacting to songs, reacting to pure vocals? Live reactions are way better for that, even if he was sick. @@LivingPeople12 to a certain degree, yes, which is why the official music video is better; you get a better idea of his voice. We know for a fact (because of how much he hates it) that there's no autotuning in the official music video; we can't say that about this one. We know for a fact that his voice in the official music video is untainted by illness (they would have rescheduled the recording session); the opposite is true of this performance. And, perhaps most importantly, we know for a fact that when we hear him in the official music video, we are hearing him with a properly warmed up voice. We cannot say that about this version.

Finally!!! Someone who said something kinda-sorta negative...about the auto-tuning and the effect it had. I love this version of the song and have watched many reviews. You are the first I’ve seen who actually mentioned it. (New subscriber)

-Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. - -Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -David: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. The stars just aligned that night and everything went right."

Paul Simon said after hearing the Disturbed version of this song, "This is how it should've been sung".
