I’m a 57 year old US Army Cold War Veteran, I listened to Simon and Garfunkel in my youth, I also like and have met Disturbed. When I heard this cover the first time, I had tears streaming down my face, David really made me understand and feel this song in ways the original never did.

The narrative arc of how he sings this is pure masterclass. Yes, the technique, but above and beyond… From introspective sadness, to rising sense of urgency to communicate something important, a moment of contempt for the deaf ears, to rage, to bitter sorrow and final empty sense of spent sorrow. This is a thing of beauty.

I’ve never commented on anything in KZbin. But your discussion of the emotions that this rendition evokes resonated so much I felt compelled to thank you for eloquently saying what my heart feels every time I listen to this song. It strikes me so hard that I go from one vocal coach review to another to see how others connect. I cannot even explain why it hits me as hard as it does, but I suppose that is all a part of the genius of this song… the lyrics, the composition, and most certainly David’s sharing of himself and his gift. This performance inspired an entire chapter in my doctoral dissertation. This song evokes awe. In this raw emotional experience there is a connectedness to humanity. We are drawn together by the depth of this performance and true emotional wells it reaches in each of us. We are connecting in those hair raising chills provoking notes. This song lessens that sense of isolation and anxiety that has cloaked the planet for the last two years. It’s poignant and heartbreaking and deeply powerful. For me it accessed the pain and fear and outrage and helpless anger that has been bottled up inside me as I watched our country collapse and turn into a dystopian nightmare. I didn’t need to say it bc I couldn’t even if I wanted to. The words of this song and the masteful performance of David Draiman was an expression of unsaid emotion in all its messy complexities and nuances. Needless to say I ugly cried my way through that song the first time I heard it. Still do sometimes. It has been very powerful research. This performance is a gift. God bless! ❤️

I do the same thing - one reaction video after another. I just need to see others being struck with the magnificence of David’s voice and the choices he made to give this song life. I doubt I will ever tire of watching someone be drawn into the experience of hearing David sing this song. (And I cry every single time. I was recently on a cross country flight and was listening to music on my headphones to pass the time. But I deliberately chose not to listen to this because I would have embarrassed myself by breaking down. I never bother to try and fight it off. I just let the song transport me.)

You couldn’t have described any better how this song penetrates our being and it’s effect on the physical body. I’ve listened to this piece countless times and still find that it reaches into my soul in such a powerful way every time. I am 69 years old and was quite a fan of S&G in the 60’s and 70’s and have sung along with that song many, many times. However, the power behind each word in this version, completely penetrates to the core with no way of escape. The words and message have always been there, it just needed a new messenger. I am grateful for Paul Simon writing this prophetic piece and giving it a voice to be carried and shared throughout the world.

So you and I don’t have an awful lot in common you’d think.. But your reaction was precisely how I felt about this song since I happened across it about 4 years ago. Except of course you can express your emotions and technical analysis far more eloquently than I ever could! Thank you @Vocal Nova Academy for posting your reaction. Thank you especially for allowing the last two verses to play uninterrupted while you bravely absorbed Draiman's emotive connection, angelic tone, and raw power. I respect that you gave in and allowed the tears to flow. The head nod at "... people bowed and prayed" in recognition of how big this was getting. The giant, deep breath during "to the neon gods they made", looks like to try to recover some emotional balance, and then the overwhelmed look up and to your right at "... flashed out it's warning", looked like a way of saying, "Wow, this is just getting more powerful." For my part, I first heard this song while conducting business in a local bike shop. I literally had to walk to a quiet corner of the store and sobbed - face in hands, shoulders heaving. Been a professional musician for 35 years and never moved like that.

Finally, someone mentions the arrangement! The exquisite frame for David's perfect vocals. For me, it doubled the pleasure. Very imaginative, too -- who would have thought of tympani for a S&G song? Yet they formed a perfect deep floor for the voice and strings to rise against. His voice made me weep, too. Perfect pitch, perfect enunciation, with just enough distortion to emphasize the passion. It was a gift to us, and I am grateful. And thank you for your honest reaction. Well done!

I first discovered this song watching a reaction video a few years ago. I've been watching people discover it ever since. I had no words the first few times I watched it. It took me a couple weeks to realize how amazing the instrumentals are. For me, this is the definitive version of this song. Your reaction is one of my favorites. In one video, you called out things it took me weeks to identify. I especially appreciate that you called out the hope in this song. So many comments call out the anger, but I feel this is a call to action. The official video (which I saw later) confirms that for me. Thank you for the beautiful experience. I haven't cried over this one in a while. P.S. Your voice is beautiful as well. Thank you for sharing it.

Beautiful analysis! You should watch the official video to see the imagery they put together to go with the music and voice. I'd love to see you discover that masterpiece! Even if you don't react to it, you should watch it for yourself. And David was trained as a Jewish cantor. He continues to train with a vocal coach to this day, but that was his foundation. He and the band are simply magnificent!

@@somecallmetim2112 I feel like this performance is music. It's real and honest. The video with the studio version of the song is a masterpiece of art. It's the 100% perfected realization of their vision. The visuals, combined with the precise volume levels, music mix and the ability for him to redo every phrase until every note, every breath is perfectly sung and placed makes it impossible to recreate in an uncontrolled environment. It's simply breathtaking. I do prefer the video to the live performance, but I also understand why this performance is a favorite, as well. It shows his unbelievable talent, yet is actually achievable live. I think it depends on what you're looking for on any given day. They're both stunning and I'd be honored to see this in person. IMO this is the best live version I've seen even though he's sick, simply because he hasn't already been singing for an hour like he would be at a concert, he's not moving around, the crowd was quiet and the environment was as controlled as you'll find in person, allowing him to concentrate on putting his best live performance out there. 🙂

In your intro when you mentioned your delay in addressing this version of the song and the fact that the S&G ordinal version was one of your faves I was so excited to see your reaction. You, as other comments have mentioned, felt it within the very fibers of your being. In your struggle to vocalize your reaction I was watching you being truly overwhelmed with the pleasant surprise that this long hesitated introduction brought you. The one word that kept coming to mind that I thought you were feeling was "genuine". The genuine emotions this reincarnated composition brings to an already marvelous lyrical message is simply undeniable. David Draiman is the perfect vessel through which to deliver the meaning of these lyrics. His vocal diversity allows him to genuinely address every well-written illustrative phrase that Paul Simon birthed with the variety of skills that those messages each deserve. I am glad to see another owrson so moved by this brilliant cover version of the song. Paul Simon admitted after hearing this himself that the song is no longer his. THAT, IMO, is the highest praise that Disturbed could ever get for this song. As to Draiman's training, I can't speak volumes about it but I do know he was raised in a devoutly Jewish home and was trained in the music of that faith. In fact, if my memory serves me, his parents never heard him sing any music outside of his religious genre until after Disturbed had already been signed to release their first album. While I am not a religious person myself, I truly believe David Draiman's vocal abilities are an absolute gift from the heavens and I can't think of a modern song that could demonstrate that any better than Disturbed's brilliant version of S&G's already powerful song.

I am 56 years old and I have heard 100's of amazing Artists sing their original songs and then have those songs covered by other amazing artists but this song is one in a million, the best cover I know I will ever hear in my lifetime. I listen to it at least once a month and it still gives me the most amazing roller coaster of emotions. In regard to the comments concerning the audience being so quiet I believe the performance of the song was recorded the day before with no audience and then shown during the show. I truly feel that if the performance would have been live the audience would have been so blown away that you would have been able to hear a pin drop after the performance while the audience composed themselves after hearing David's performance, I know the first time I heard this song I was speechless.

Nobody ever expected this song. This cover has so many amazing things about it. It's so many feelings combined. It's a nostalgic feeling, then piled on is this feeling of doubt and surprise like seeing someone on one of those talent shows pop out some crazy talent or voice or act they've created, and then it's just an awstruck feeling of his actual voice and the orchestra and the build up. And throughout there's the message of the song that makes you think and feel and in the end it's like you just got done watching a full movie with a twist and a climax and a satisfying ending and you're left there not sure how to unwrap what the fuck just happened. But you know you feel good in the very pit of your existence.

David Draiman ....I think he's one of the best male vocalists on the planet. Beautiful. A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to vocal fry/distortion and back on a dime. He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful tonal properties to it! Was loving your reaction Bianca.

Sapnin Bee 🐝 First off I have to say, you are welcome, this is hands down my favourite live performance ever, everything you said I agree with, when you said about the darkness in his initial tones, I felt the same but like it was hidden and he was holding back. I hadn’t heard his voice until this was shared with me and I had to share it with you. I did cry with you, but what hits me hardest about this particular performance is that, literally every single tone you can imagine a male voice having, is hidden somewhere within this performance and he just keeps adding layer upon layer until the metal crescendo at the end. Literally perfect Great video JD

I am 75 y/o and studied at the feet of Simon & Garfunkel as a teen and beyond. I absolutely LOVE this treatment of The Sounds of Silence. David Draiman drew me in with his vocals and your reaction was priceless. I watched 20+ reaction videos and nobody had put words to my emotions..... BUT. YOU. DID. I was like you. I was transformed. The words from my youth, which I so lightly regarded, have now become my warning to a preoccupied generation. And yet, I am oddly comforted by the warmth of Draiman's voice, his tones. I am somehow feeling safe because HE is sounding the alarm. Alas.... who doesn't love a good paradox?

So basically a full run down on alot. David was trained as a Jewish Cantor to sing the Torah, like his father and grandfather. He was sick the night he preformed, told the producers he had it... they still autotuned him and it pissed him off. Simon has also said that the song is now his. And the final piece... the S&G version was a warning, David sang it in anger because the warning was not listened to.

Paul Simon really likes Disturbed's cover, and that means alot, and it shows. Seeing interviews of David talking about this show how much respect he has for the song, and that shines through to this performace. It sounds like he internalised the lyrics in his own way, and projected it so clearly. That's why this cover feels almost mystical to me, he does everything so incredibly right

I love this live version. It's hard to believe he managed such a vocal range with flu and a high temp. His vocals I think are more nuanced in the recorded version, and the closing lasts longer and with more "emotion" and volume in his voice - and that video.. WOW - but being able to listen to how his voice changes live is incredible.

You strayed away from hitting on the technical aspects like so many others have focused on and instead told us how it made you feel which is so very important in terms of musical performances as a whole. Its obvious the original song is something you hold near and dear to your heart. Your decision to focus on how you felt after hearing the first few lines of the song is so refreshing.
