Same. She never forgets to acknowledge/thank the other musicians. Ditto with her guest appearance at Epica's Retrospective concert, where she did "Stabat Mater" with Simone Simons. She gracefully thanked the conductor/orchestra. Floor has always been a true teamplayer.

Floor is definitely not an opera singer turned into metal singer, just the opposite. After graduating from the Rock Academy in 2003, she studied 2 year at the conservatory. 1 year opera and 1 year music theatre while singing with her first band After Forever which she joined at the age of 16 in 1997. Floor considers herself as a musical nerd and an eternal student of music in general.

Ken & Co. nerding out over Floor's embouchure. Very enjoyable start of the weekend. And yes, it was all acoustic. No effects, amplification or mic needed (but for the one to record the performance). Great stuff. EDIT: Same period, same combo and some more material to use for education, Ken. This time the mic is a bit easier to spot and it survived the wonderful stress-test Floor unleashed here: "Floor Jansen & RLSQ - Monolith Of Doubt & My Pledge Of Allegiance #1 (P60 Amstelveen 27.12.2009) 1/9" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/faLcYnuMZ7eCrrs /EDIT In a setting that was quite similar, I've seen her throw away the mic they'd put before her (or at least swinging it aside). Floor's vocal power and dynamics are best served raw. Many mics didn't survive the "in vivo" Floor test. Cheers from Amsterdam!

This must be the first reaction to this video ever. The "setting that was quite similar" - is it "Floor Jansen zingt Ave Maria"? Imagine a classical album with her. Recorded in a big room with its natural reverb, without any artificial effects, without the sterile modern production and without compression, so we could hear her _real_ voice on a recording for once. Dreams...

@@noneofyerbeeswax8194 WT..? YT notification came through for once!!! Yes, it was Floor doing Ave Maria in 2011 when she was still recovering from her burn-out. Her only gig in those dark & piano black days. Your comment helped me retrace the video featuring Floor clearly smashing the mic to pieces, like I said 😇 Horrible recording, but in the context of it all oh so touching. Cheers from da Modderland!

@@noneofyerbeeswax8194 That imaginary album would be the one I'd take with me to the proverbial deserted island. Dunno if Ken c.s. mentioned it (I believe Ken may have hinted at this) and I'd have to rewatch, but with all of the emphasis laid on the benefits of classical training here (vowel formation etc), I'd really like to point out that many a classically schooled vocalist would utterly fail, should they've tried their hand at reproducing Floor's performance here. Classical training has benefits but it can also act as a vocal prison. Tales are still being told of songsters trying to break out & getting lost. Never to be found again.. So ALL HAIL Floortje, the girl nxt door who just happens to be a once in many lifetimes vocal giant 😎

I don't think that the performance we're seeing here has a lot to do with classical training. While definitely helpful, it can also be restricting. Sopranos of old were taught to belt and mix, but this techniques seem to be largely ignored today, and I believe that many an opera singer would fail had they attempted something like this. Very rarely do we see this level of precision, projection and belting power from a soprano these days. What matters most when it comes to singing is the natural talent. Floor's talent is already at a level where technique and training become optional, and she has put some serious effort into developing it. The result is thereafter: this is as close to perfection as humanly possible...

If I had to classify Floor into one classification, it is musical theatre. She studied it for a longer time than opera or rock, even. That is also where her stage presence originates (my opinion, you don't have to agree). You call it musical psychology and I agree. Getting the audience in a state where you want them, with little physical effort (apart from singing) is Floor her strongest point.
@strabel803
@strabel803 Жыл бұрын
Yes ,i would agree ,but musical theatre is in general not as raw/gritty as Floor does,so Floor just made her own genre "gritty musical theatre"😅 Just making fun,but the studies she did just enhanced the enormous talent she already had,in my opinion. Floor started of with "heavy" bands and i considder that also as a kind of study and in a way it was her luck,otherwise you got probebly a second Tarja,who started the other way around with opera and singing in a metal band. I don't think there would be a singer like Floor is ,if she started with conservatory classical/opera singing,there probably would be more restrictions to her singing.😉🤘

Born in 1981 Floor started her career in 1997 at the age of 16 she as a background singer from the Dutch metal band ‘After Forever’, but real soon she took over the lead until early 2009 and the band fell apart. Parallel she studied at the Dutch Rock Academy in Tilburg starting in 1999 where she graduated in 2003 and spent two years on classical training with the National Conservatory. She studied Musical Theatre and one year Opera. She plays guitar, piano and flute and has completed 12 years of music studies. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. In the months between the break-up of AF and the formation of her new band ReVamp (noteworthy was tat on the 65th anniversary of the Dutch liberation from World War II on May 5, 2010). she did sidesteps with, among others, the Red Limo String Quartet. Her facial expressions are priceless. She's so happy singing these songs, even without a band. I always find it strange when people say she "doesn't" like classical singing. What she's using here, is the most classical technique imaginable: bel canto. I can imagine that she doesn't like the _modern_ way of "classical" singing though, which is very strict and restrictive. Modern sopranos are not taught to utilize their voice to its full potential, they're taught to stick to one, most efficient, technique, drill it to perfection and ignore everything else. Many an opera singer would fail had they attempted something like what she's doing here.

Would be interesting to know what it was exactly that Floor didn't like. I know she's commented on it over the years in ways that can be interpreted in several ways. Also the moment she said so could be relevant. We all know for instance that Tuomas wasn't keen on repeating the Tarja vibe all too often, to put it mildly. Thank goodness for that! In such a context, Floor as the newbie singer would do well to distance herself a bit from her classical training. Keep in mind tho, that the one visiting teacher who really inspired her at the Rock Academy where she couldn't find was she was looking for, caused her to pursue additional years of training in musical theatre and opera. One thing stands out to me if you'd take the "didn't like" position at face value and that is Floor's behaviour rather than her words. In ReVamp, which was her baby so to speak, she inserted the "classical" thingy (which she supposedly didn't like) rather frequently. She even did so in a very enjoyable cover of Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance". Perhaps you've seen it, great fun! - kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3i5inWjoLGlfaM Cheers!

@@BrendonChase_2015 What a great clip! The only trve way of singing pop songs: have fun and make fun of them. The only thing I've heard (or read?) Floor say is that female opera singers sound unnatural and she doesn't quite like it. But of course, people took it as "she doesn't like opera". I won't be much surprised if some time from now, someone takes a video like the one you linked as a proof that she never really liked metal either and has always wanted to become a pop singer... The operatic technique has been developed and perfected with one single purpose in mind: to create a natural resonance and project the sound without a microphone. How beautiful and intelligible it sounded, was of little importance. Some opera singers have learned to adjust their technique when singing with amplification. Dianne van Giersbergen, for example, doesn't sound the same in her metal band as she does in an opera house. There are others who never learned this... but I'm not pointing fingers here.😊

Maybe i misspoke but im pretty sure Floor said in some video ( dont remember which one , so many ) that she didnt particularly like it and her to only study for 1 yr kinda supports that , most singers who do study classical usually do it for years , i think you need about 6 yrs to really have mastered it .....its amazing how good she is with only 1 year .

@@silverblack5475 Haha, no you didn't misspeak abt Floor commenting on it and for sure many would need their entire lifetimes worth of classical schooling to approach her level after only a few months. The "it" being the schooling. Floor used the classical style so very often (before NW) tho, that her vocal choices showed a genuine love of the style, applied the Floor-way of course and provided she was entirely free to make artistic choices of her own. I always took her comments to apply tt schooling itself and the prospect at the time of becoming a full blown classical singer. Sure glad she didn't like that idea. Cheers! He's my take - I think she's lip syncing for the video. So many cuts, no obvious mic, no camera person shown - that's just how it comes across. I figure there were three shoots. One for close ups of her then band members, one from afar with the audience and then one for the recording. I just wouldn't put too much into that it was a live recording. Not that she didn't perform it for the audience, just don't think it was part of the final product.

And what would be the point of such an elaborate scheme? It's not some kind of official recording made to impress people and make money. This video only exists because someone back in the day decided to rip this fragment from a TV broadcast and post it on YT - much like all other After Forever/ReVamp/pre-Nightwish Floor videos that are not filmed on a calculator powered by a potato. Nobody but her old fans even knew or cared about it until 3 years ago. Mic is quite obviously standing right there on the floor in front of Floor, about 1.5 m (or 5 ft in freedom units) away from her. There are a few more around the RLSQ. Typical setup used to record classical concerts and opera singers.
