You are are spot on, Justin. It's basically the culture of singing. I remember in grade school the teacher will randomly pick a student to sing the National Anthem in the classroom with no training. Then, around Christmas time, which is from September to January in the Philippines, little children will go caroling house to house, mostly a cappella. So early on we use our voice as our instrument. It's innate. It's the joy of singing.

Not just karaoke or social singing but there are literally hundreds of singing competitions at the local level to participate in. And the best get filtered through the national ones as they age. Mori and Katrina and Charice are all products of the system from a very early age

Music is part of Philippine life. There is a song for every occasion. From childhood we are already exposed to listening to music, in radio, TV, cellphones, MP3 players, all kinds of media. And at a young age start mimicking these singers. Singing along in karaoke is a national pastime. Then there are singing contests everywhere from the local to the national level. Talent shows are mostly singing. No wonder then the Philippines produces a lot of singers and vocalists. But not every Filipino can sing, though. There are still only a handful that we can consider world-class or who can go toe-to-toe with the world's most popular singers. There really are people born with the natural talent for singing, then they nurture and develop this talent. These are the popular Filipino singers that are widely-known nowadays. Morissette is one of them. Thank you, Justin, for your continuing support for Mori and other Filipino artists.

You need to understand that Filipinos from a very young age are exposed to TV shows where a known artist is singing or dancing but mostly singing. Filipinos do not sing just to sing but we like to sing with the hope that we can please anyone who would hear us sing... so we try to do our best, we try to sound really good and in the process, I guess we learn what works best for us, what we need to do to reach a certain note, high or low and very low notes. It's kind of hard to explain but a lot to do with how we feel and how want to please and impress our friends when we sing... maybe it is also the reason why A FILIPINO INVENTED THE FIRST KARAOKE MACHINE. We used to call it "Minus One" and it started with a cassette tape and we had to read the printed lyrics. Cassette tapes were replaced with the "133 vinyl" (?) then immediately followed with the "magic microphone" that uses memory stick to store everything (music, lyrics with visual background)... In the 1980's in my first apartment in Los Angeles (I finally left home) I had the cassette type and later my older siblings gave me as a bday gift the "Magic Microphone" hahaha!

Justin, why don't you go visit and experienced it, at least the singing culture part of the Philippines on your 1st time there. You have such huge following from the Philippines, no doubt they can get you to meet those artists you react to. They've done it before to some reactors from UK and the US. Don't wait too long, just do it. There's a couple of non-musical reactors already beat you to it, bro lol. You belong there, you might learn some things there and vice versa.
