​@@singwithAshley it's a character choice, it's been a while since I've seen the whole show, but I'm pretty sure he does that when he talks. He doesn't talk much but when he does it's excitedly about his passions so the breathing is part of his "nerdy, awkard" character

i definitely think the breathing is a character choice! not just because ricky used to be mute, like somebody else mentioned, but because it sort of just suits his whole demeanour imo. he's sort of charmingly nerdy and strange, and the way he breathes when he sings just Makes Sense with the way he talks, for me. he has a few little monologues where he'll just rattle off some sci-fi jargon in this sort of excited tone of voice, and the way he breathes during those monologues and during this song, in my opinion, helps to sell how excited he is to finally be able to express himself verbally, after a whole lifetime of being ignored by everybody around him. so yeah, i think it's definitely a character choice! not every ricky actor performs this song this way, but a few do, and i think it adds something :]

Funfact with Ricky's quick change Jane Doe also changes.Thats why shes absent after his change. Space Age Batchelor Man takes place right before the Ballad of Jane doe. When she is floating upside down they had to find a way to keep her skirt from flipping upside down too. She changes into a skirt with wires in it to keep it from falling after she disappares in this song.

i think a significant amount of the weirdness comes from its placement between talia and ballad of jane doe and the fact that you haven't listened to any version of the first song or What The World Needs means you haven't had any of the context for this to be extremely weird *within*, the weirdness comes from the context and the tonal whiplash, and minimally from the sexy cat lady religion

Part of what I love of this show- is that they all dance how teenagers who think they are being very cool do. Its such a fun song and as a fan of Cats, absurd sci-fi, and rock its great for me. I do prefer hearing the cast album of this song- without being rushed and with some alterations its a bit stronger as a song- tho I get why its diff for character on stage. Also, Jane’s song is after thing- so you notice she disappears by the end to get set up

I just realized that Ricky's line "For love is the closest you can come to another person because that's the closest you can come to be another person," is actually a line from the play "Legoland"! "Legoland" was made by the creator of "Ride the Cyclone," and is actually about Penny Lamb (or who Jane Doe ends up being) and her younger brother, Ezra. "Legoland" is a whole other thing and absolutely crazy, and it was made quite a while before "Ride the Cyclone," so there's often little easter eggs in "Ride the Cyclone"!!!

My personal theory is that he’s not as experienced in singing/performing as the other choir members because he’s literally never sung let along talked in his life! One thing I love about vocal coaches like you, it's that you're not just trying to point out the stuff that you don't like, you don't even say it like it's anything insulting at all. Your top priority is what is and isn't healthy for the voice and you point out all of the things that you do like and that the singer does well as much as the stuff that you'd think weren't healthy for the performer (which comes out as more of a concern than a diss more than anything).
