Thank you Beth, CSN never gets the recognition in the modern era they deserve. The harmonies are crystal and the dynamics cause the delivery to elevate overall. As a kid I would listen awash in their soaring vocals. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Nash sings the high part - his chest voice is (said to be) incredibly high so it sounds very even across his range. the way it blends with Crosby is unreal - they say it came very naturally to them (but i bet they did work on it a lot too). I saw them at glasto in 2009 - they sounded tremendous (playing this song and all the other hits). i particularly enjoyed Crosby's crowd chat, introducing the band: "Stills, he writes the rock songs (crowd cheer happily)...Nash, he writes the anthems (crowd cheer hesitantly)....me, I write the weird shit (plays Guinevere; crowd now delirious in the palm of his hand)"

Joni Mitchell & Judy Collins stole their hearts altogether. Stills wrote Suite: Judy Blue Eyes to win back Collins, unsuccessfully, and Joni loved and dumped both Crosby & Nash.

I used to put a big speaker on each side of my head and blast this song over and over and over, it's just a masterpiece. I love the way the three voices stack one at a time - Stills "we are one...", then Nash comes in on two alone then Crosby joins on three together, and all of them sing for each other. Thank you so much for reviewing it. Your comments are so interesting. Rest in peace David Crosby, love you all ❤️

One of the great songs and performances of all time, in my opinion. Their harmonies breathe, especially in this song. I had never heard anything quite like it before I listened to their first album. I became a professional musician because of these guys, especially Stills. And after 47 yrs I'm still doing it. I've never done anything more than bars, restaurants and rock joints, but thats OK; to do it at all is a fantastic blessing. l can't thank them enough. RIP, David Crosby.

They were great with their harmonies. I got to see them twice in 1975. Once and Madison Square Garden in NYC just before Thanksgiving. Little did I know that during my dinner break I was sitting next to Graham Nash. I happened to be working the show. Later on her asked me what I was doing 2 days later and invited me +1 to see them in Philadelphia at the Spectrum Arena. It was so amazing hearing the audience at both show sining Our Hour and Teach Your Children. They were louder than the band. I also got to see David Crosby solo when he was taping a segment for Don Kirshner's Rock Concert TV show back in the 70's. Lets not forget about Simona and Garfunkel when it came to hamony.

i am not a singer, but if i'm not mistaken it's more apparent on the studio recording that in that section, "They are one person" starts with just Stephen Stills singing, then "They are two alone" has Graham Nash join him, then "They are three together" has David Crosby join, and finally "They are for/four each other" has them all together for one more line. the way it builds is just gorgeous, and only they could pull it off in my opinion. gives me chills every time.

Everybody had this album. For good reason,it was that damned good. Early summer of 1972, I had just graduated from high school. Were having one of those "It's never going to be the same again come September " parties. Some one produced an acoustic guitar, and we all sang a bluesy rendition of "suite Judy Blue eyes" and eventually, much of rest of the album. Fun and sad at the same time. A point which is largely forgotten these days is its subject. Stephen was in a relationship with Judy Collins ( _vide_ "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes") and at this time the relationship was very rocky; indeed it ended soon after. Stephen's lyric is an angsty lament that he can't figure out how to help her stop hurting because he's still in love with her--possibly because he didn't recognize he was the root cause of her hurting.

There is a background story here. Graham Nash was introduced to Cosby and Stills by Jerry Garcia, in the kitchen of the house where the Mamas and the Papas lived. (Stills was dating Joni Mitchel and Nash was dating Carly Simon.) They sang some songs in the living room and knew they had something. Can you imagine singing harmony with Carly Simon, Joni Mitchel and the Momas and the Papas? Nash went back and quit the Hollies, Stills left Buffalo Springfield, and Cosby quit the Byrds to form this group. Believe it or not, the group has not been on speaking terms in 20 years. You should also critique Teach Your Children, it is one of my favorites.

I also always really loved the "they are one person, they are too/two alone..." bit Stills is the one singing "they are one person" a solo line. Nash joins him for the "too/two alone" making it two people singing. Crosby joins for "free/three" and now there are three. If only Young was in this performance and he added to the "for/four", making him the fourth voice! That would've been incredible. Still, I always thought it was cool how they did that :)

I disagree. The cover is great, but the original means so much more. I much prefer the studio version to this, but this was their first song basically. But also, the lyrics/alliterations are so much of this song-- it means so much more coming from the source than a cover. Again, not hating on home free at all, but the studio version is perfect and from the source-- can't beat it
