Actually, Rob's register is higher than Austin's...and the band doesn't break down as "high tenor" or "lead tenor". If HF were a typical "band", Austin would be the front man. His voice is stronger and has more....character maybe?... than Rob's. Rob's voice is much cleaner and smoother....typical of choir singers.

@raveousone

@@zencraft3676 the reason a lot of people refer to rob as lead tenor and Austin as high tenor is that's what they are labeled as at the end of a couple vids that have end credits. generally speaking lead tenor isn't referring to the guy in the lead but the guy who is generally singing melodies in a range in between the high tenor and the baritone which would be rob most of the time.

I love how this song plays with alliteration Helplessly Hoping Her Harlequin Hovers, Wordlessly Watching he Waits by the Window, Love isn't Lying it's Loose in a Lady who Lingers, etc. While I am aware that the man's name is Adam Chance, it always throws me when someone calls him Adam. To me, he's Chance and Adam is the beat boxer. I'm pretty sure it was Austin on the highest part. It usually is. Other reactors I have heard commented on how mature Rob's voice is and how young and bright Austin's is. I was surprised to hear you comment on the "maturity" of Austin's voice.

I grew up listening to CSN & had their album with this song Helplessly Hoping. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. But I must say since I discovered Home Free they more than do justice to all the songs they cover. And this song is perfection to me with the 5 part harmonies. I can't say enough about how great these guys are & humble while still staying respectful to the original song.

This song kind of does the same but, if you really want to see what each of them can do individually, Don Mclean's re-release of American Pie for its 50th anniversary was done with Home Free and he basically gave each member save the beatboxer their own verse. Don Mclean says he chose Home Free to sing with him because they quote, 'Know harmonies.' (exhibit A: _*gestures to this video*)_ The bass, Tim Foust sings in the middle of his range for his solo but does go low in the background before and after. The beatboxer doesn't get a solo but does his thing for the entire 8 minute song without a break. I hear he nearly passed out. That's dedication right there.

Home Free has really two very experienced bass voices, Tim Foust, a basso profundo, and Adam Chance, who sang bass in his prior group, Street Corner Symphony. With Home Free Chance is free to sing baritone and lead. Both have very high ranges and Chance often sings with Rob and Austin on close harmonies. You can hear a difference to Home Free than other a cappella groups when Chance overlays his deep baritone over Tim’s low bass. Rob has an extensive range, but he usually sings from baritone to high tenor, and is usually considered Lead Tenor. Austin has an extremely high range which stays very strong and beautiful. He sang At Last on his channel in Etta’s key. Adam Rupp is a master of vocal percussion, horn, and wind instruments and usually sings baritone or 3rd tenor when they do five part harmonies.They all beatbox, instruments, and sounds when needed.
@lrfcowper
@lrfcowper 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, Adam Rupp is a tenor. His range lies lower than Austin but higher than Rob. In 5-part harmony pieces when Austin is singing lead, Adam is often the high harmony note above Austin that just goes on forever.

Austin Brown is their high tenor, Rob Lundquist is the lower tenor, Adam Chance is their baritone/bass, Tim Foust is the super low bass, some people think he is a basso profundo. I love watching your appreciation of great music. You are so expression without 'overacting' as it were or getting too complicated in your evaluations so experienced and beginning listeners can follow your comments. Great job in not losing any of us. I've listened to this several times and may have heard Home Free a few more times than you have to this point so I'd venture that perhaps Austin has the high part in the beginning of this that you wondered about. His voice is slightly thinner than Rob's and, in keeping with where their ranges are for this particular song, it fits. However, all of these guys are so talented that it truly could have been almost any one of them, including Tim's bass voice. LOL. I'm always amazed when I relisten to this with each new reactor that the 2 voices that sing in harmony and then in unison (same note, same octave) at the very beginning of this cover are a bass/baritone and a tenor and not two tenors. It's always stunning because, as you pointed out, they sound as if they are only one voice instead of two. I forget everything you've reacted to so far, so forgive me if this is repetitive requestion for Home Free's covers of "Crazy" and "When a Man Loves a Woman." Thanks for the reactions. (also great to see you with Jacob Restituto; thanks for showing him around here in Texas).

When I was on a Navy ship in the late 1960s and early 1970s in Vietnam, we had some (for that time) very good stereo equipment set up on top of our computer cabinets. We had 6 and sometimes 8 speakers around the computer room. Crosby, Stills, and Nash and sometimes Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young were among our favorites. Those guys may have been the early introduction to superb harmony that pushed me into a ten year period of leading barber shop quartets. There's just nothing quite like being in the middle of a group with that kind of perfect harmony and hearing the overtones come out. You can't buy that sound; you have to be in the middle of it! If that doesn't give you chills when the cord is resolved, you just might be numb... These five guys have actually improved on the originals. In 1970, I wouldn't have thought that possible. My opinion has changed.

For really close harmonies try their cover Go Rest High On That Mountain, Church Sessions. Tim sings baritone and does a short lead insert of Amazing Grace, while Rob sings lead and it’s seems like Rupp is doing the bass. Austin provides the high tenor part. Chance, I think is doing harmony with Rob and Austin, but it’s hard to pick up even though the sound quality is great. It’s a Vince Gill song.

Seven Bridges, Auld Lang Sayne and How Great Thou Art are great examples of harmonies....2 of the three have no beatboxing but Adam Rupp singing tenor especially his little solo in How Great Thou Art.

One of my all time favorite Crosby Stills & Nash songs, and Home Free does an amazing job with it. In particular I like it because Adam (world class vocal percussionist that he is) is part of the harmonies and Chance sings part of the lead which he doesn't often get to do. He is normally in the role of the baritone-glue, albeit with incredible range.

Nearly every reactor fails to mention Adam Rupp singing, and you can hear him as the lowest tenor in the chord harmony. Also, when the bassline carries during the tenor breaks so does the baritone. It's not as easy to hear but it's there.

Isn’t this beautiful?!! One of my favorites of theirs. Their harmonies are killer. Tim Foust is the bass with the long dark hair. Tim is the one with the 5 octave range. Austin was the 3rd singer in this and he’s the high tenor. Chance (baritone) started the song. Rob is a tenor and was second (glasses). Adam is the beatboxer and came in with Tim near the end. He has shorter blondish hair and is a tenor (when he sings). One Man Band, Country Roads, Seven Bridges Road. They have great Christmas music too. Angels We Have Heard On High, Do You Hear What I Hear, O Holy Night are some of my favorites. They also don’t mind being goofy and have fun songs too. Great reaction Danielle!
