This was performed on the CONAN show on March 28, 2016. Paul Simon happened to catch it. He called Dave Draiman to compliment him and the band on their cover, saying it was among the best renditions he’d ever heard of his masterpiece. Draiman was (understandably) stunned!!

I don’t think most reactors realize this man is 47 years old and has been the lead sepinger of a heavy metal band since 1994. That’s 26 years! My point is, his classical training as a kid, as a cantor at the synagogue with his father, is what taught him to save his voice. At his age, most singer’s voices would be trashed. He is more amazing than most can imagine, but I thought your being a voice teacher would allow you that extra layer of awe. 🥰

What's insane about this performance is the control he has over his distortion. So many singers who do heavy distortion really have trouble turning it on and off mid song. Draiman does it seamlessly. Going from the distortion on "tenement" to a very clean "halls" at 4:56 is a clear example. Crazy control.

David Draiman...I've never heard a timber to a voice like his before. He can also go from baritone with a vibrato to tenor, to clear as crystal to rasp with vibrato and back on a dime! Unbelievable control and sound. Lol...he can also growl and scream when he wants to. You did a nice job Jacob of reacting to this song. Try now a "screamer" of his....LOL....

this song was written by paul simon, sung by art garfunkle, during the late 1960s about the Vietnam war. David Draiman was so sick with the flu he was too weak to stand, so they sat him in on a chair. He didn't find out until late that the show producer used a bit of autotune. David Draiman spent the first couple of decades of his life training in the US and Israel to be a cantor, like his world-famous grandfather.

Love your response...so much so I subscribed. 'Would definitely recommend you, my friend! May I suggest another David--DAVID PHELPS--whose 3+ octave range, in FULL voice (E2--F5 ), leaves people in awe. He's a singer, songwriter, arranger, producer and winner of many awards; we "phans" call him the best kept secret in the music industry. Classically trained, his usual style is building...building...building...until he seems to hit a top note and people say, "Wow!!!" And then--THEN--he often jumps or slides an entire octave and that's when people go, "WHOA!!!!!" David checks off all the boxes--tone, technical expertise, breath control, range, performance, etc., but my favorite is that beautiful tone, especially in the upper registers. He's best well known as a Christian artist, but he does quite a lot of secular work as well. BTW--he lives just south of you in Culleoka! Here's hoping with this example (perfect for this time of year!) that we can make you a phan as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e52tYZmfeZWfocU

@@JacobBurtonStudios Thank you, so much, Jacob, for your reply! We phans usually use the performance above ("'O Holy Night") from about 20 years ago as a "gateway" performance into discovering David (in case others will read this as well). May I suggest a second favorite performance by him for (hopefully) another review? When I mention why I SO love that tone of his in the upper registers, it's because I played trumpet all the way through college--I absolutely adore the shininess, the brilliance of brass. See if you agree at the top of his slide below. This is from about 15 years ago at the taping of his first solo DVD. A lot of people went home with cold feet that night...because he knocked their socks off. I know, because I was there!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZSulox5mt-tpZI

Great reaction to a classic performance. That slow inexorable build up of intensity to a fever pitch, is what makes this so much better than all of the other covers that try to use this arrangement. Another wonderful and unexpected performance, that is a reaction mainstay, if you haven't seen it, is Marcelito Pomoy's cover of, The Prayer, on Wish. Another one in a billion talent. I also really like Swedish Idol/AGT alum. Chris Klafford's beautifully produced, acoustic Kitchen Sessions. The guy is an incredible singer and player. John Lennon's: Imagine, Billie Eilish's: Ocean Eyes, Cyndi Lauper's: Girls Just Want To Have Fun (Duet) and JP Cooper's: In The Silence are all highlights.

@@JacobBurtonStudios I'm kidding with you buddy alot of people would say I look like Peter Griffin after losing his hair Enjoyed your reaction glad u messaged me cause I forgot to sub. If your really into song lyrics and songs that mean 2 things at once check out Eminem's Darkness try to figure it out. Don't read the advisory warning in the begining but watch the video. It's deep samples Sound Of Silence and The 3rd verse gives it away so try to guess before the end. Don't worry he goes slow in this one.

This has become a standard for the band, always expected at their live gigs! David and his brother were classically trained singers. He turned to metal and his brother is an opera singer. Paul Simon said he wrote this after a dream and the meaning is still argued about. The video I feel talks of the rediscovery of lost music. One island find the sheet music, the other find the instruments and travel to them... Paul Simon saw THIS very performance on Conan and loved it. Poor David was really poorly with a bad cold when he sung it on Conan, so I urge you to watch the official video to hear David in top form and the visuals really add to the music. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJyag4mtaK5rm8k Check these interviews with David... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKWxl6qlgKljjqM kzbin.info/www/bejne/baauiXuui550i8U The official video... kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2qnmGCdbNllopY The original Simon and Garfunkel version... kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHKooaN8irx_nMU Pentatonix did an amazing version of Disturbed’s version of this song... kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZW5m4mqpddoa68 One of Disturbed’s classic tunes!!!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmqvhYdmrdyXnNk

I really like your review, enjoy the points you make, especially about being patient. Your video having that music after the song plays is really awful. I spent a good half a minute trying to figure out where that awful music was coming from that was interfering with your comments. Sounds like a bad vid game.

You may have had some really interesting things to say about this. Unfortunately, you chose to override your comments with another soundtrack. And, didn't provide any way to compensate for that via CC. I loved listening to the performance again but gained nothing from your "analysis", whatever it may have been.
