Yeah, the pure tone that is heard is called shruthi in classical music. Every singer is made to practice with it, so that their pitch never wavers. After a point, that shruthi rings in your head whenever you start to sing. Every singer has a different pitch, so their trainers choose an appropriate shruthi for each person.

It was a yahoo interview so go the link for archived page for original yahoo page. It said she trained with Gautam Mukharji before she got work for the movie Mast on Sonu Nigam's recommendation. "“Meri Aawaz Suno” on the DD National in 1996, where I bagged the “Lata Mangeshkar Trophy” for the best female singer of India. However, it was only thereafter my real struggle began despite receiving a national recognition and even cutting a solo album with the HMV, “Aira Gaira Nathu Khaira” that didn’t click big as per expectations. Realizing my limitation I got a formal training in classical singing from Gautam Mukherjee. Hence after a brief lull despite giving forgettable playback for some movies, I got an overnight fame with the songs of movie “Mast” including its title track"

Every Indian singer practices (riyaz) everyday for hours accompanied by either harmonium or taanpura. This gives us that precision of notes that you are referring to. Raags are combinations of different notes, emitting emoting & evoking different emotions. Every raag also represents a certain hour of the day, which is represented by the notes (sargam) combination.

That instrument in the background you heard is called as tanpura, it helps us to stay in the scale you choose, so eventually we kind of tune our minds listening to to it. We adjust the scales to certain notes which is present in the Raag we practice, like some ragas have certain notes omitted, so our tanpura instrument could be adjusted accordingly.

hey Justin, I've been watching some of your videos for a few months now and I just wanted to tell you how amazing it is for me that you're also reacting to Indian singers and you are not only focused on western singers/melodies/songs. Hi Justin. Can I request, please please please make a reaction video of "PAUBAYA". Moira Dela Torre is the singer and producer with her husband Jason who also co-wrote the song. It is about a couple for a long time before they broke up. It took maybe one year to see each other and agreed to do the music video and it also became their closure song. It was really beautifully made. The lines between the actors are really their own that's why it is so personal and very meaningful. I hope you do the reaction with Ms. Lala Main as well. Thank you. There are 2 types of songs classical and folk. Sine wave is used in classical music so yea some of them do practice that. Classical songs are also 2 types one of North one of south they both have diff subsets in it and diff Ragas or pitches used in diff formats of songs originating in diff states. All Ragas or melodies have diff formulas for using them too.
