First of all, it's important for people to know that Hooverphonic is making incredible music for more than 2 decades. Geike Arnaert became an official member of the band in 1997 for their 2nd album, when she was only 17. She left the band in 2008, after 6 successful albuns and several acclaimed tours to pursue solo career (equally successful btw). And last year they recorded a new version of Mad About You to celebrate her return and also the 20th anniversary of the song. The band has been choosen to represent Belgium because of their importance and not because they are new. All the singers before Geike and after her departure have their own relevance and contribution to the band. Alex Callier and Raymond Geerts are trully hitmakers, but she's definitely the soul of it all. She's amazing, the comments you made about her performance is pretty much what she trully is as an artist, singer, composer and performer. She's incredible. What you hear in this song is just a piece of their classic and distinct sound. Club Montepulciano, Mad About You, Eden, Vinegar And Salt, Out Of Sight, Jackie Cane, Sometimes, You Love Me To Death, Expedition Impossible, among others... Classics!

The singer Geike Arnaerts is the original singer of Hooverphonic. She left after being with them after a couple of years (decades?) and they had several different singers. But none of them realy managed to get to Geike's level in terms of the atmosphere of Hooverphonic's music. You might recall her from hits like "Mad About You". You should check out their early music with Geike.

Corection. She was their fourth singer
@EmiIy76623 жыл бұрын
I think Hooverphonic themselves wanted to keep Liesje, since she was "made" for the group, but it's true that Geike managed to deal with them the longest. I'm pretty sure that if they could choose, they would go back to Liesje though. She fit their early trip hop aesthetic the best (check 2 Wicky and Inhaler). I absolutely love Geike though for their darker songs.
@andriottijunior3 жыл бұрын
@@EmiIy7662 I don't think that. Fans made of Liesje kind of a goddess myth because of the huge success 2Wicky was and what a classic tune it became. But being fair, Geike is by far the greatest performer they ever had. If you pay attention, both Noemie and Luka were choosen because their tone have a resemblance to Geike's voice that fits to the band's identity Geike build over the years. Geike was there for 11 yrs, she became the image and voice of the band, the same as Skye is to Morcheeba.
@andriottijunior3 жыл бұрын
@@andreasg.9997 yes, not the "original" front singer, but the official one for 11 yrs and 6 albuns. That's a great story to tell among any other one.

I love when former members of a band return or get back together after a hiatus to continue a journey, like Geike to Hooverphonic, Skye to Morcheeba, All Saints, Sugababes... That means so much about maturity and understanding. For us, listeners, also feels so nostalgic and familiar, like coming home.

As a Belgian, I think my opinion can be interesting :) First of all, Hooverphonic is a Flemish band, but nevertheless known throughout Belgium. It is a rather old group, since it was created in 1995! But, It's one of the most famous groups in Belgique, by the way. That they represent Belgium at Eurovision was a huge surprise because we really did not expect that. It's a bit like Tones And I represent Australia at Eurovision Song Contest. Here in Belgium, it had the same impact. Regarding the composition of the group, it has changed a lot. In 2008, Geike joined the group. In 2018, Luka arrives and stays until Eurovision 2020. And for this year, Hooverphonic has decided to go "old-fashioned" with Geike. For this INCREDIBLE comeback, Hooverphonic did a remake of THE song that made them known, and it was with Geike: Mad About You. Luka was really cool, she did a really good job, and extremely famous songs, still today. But, I find that if I had to choose... Geike was the best choice for Eurovision. The song is, I think, excellent! The universe is very special ... but it is the Hooverphonic universe. When you listen to their songs, you are all the time "attracted" to them, to their voice, to their universe. Regarding the lyrics, they are special, I grant, but Hooverphonic had spoken about the fact that they had heard "Jonny Cash" on the radio ... and that's why they wanted to put it in their lyrics 😁 Admittedly, Belgium does not have a big track record at Eurovision, but ... there are a lot of stories that only true fans know, like with Hooverphonic. A huge thank you for reacting to this song, for paying a little attention to our little country of Belgium 😁 Thank you 😁

I loved this at the time. The word I'd use is authentic - there's no tricks, autotune or vocal gymnastics - just her effortless skill and experience producing this vocal performance. I believe the "don't you even wear my Johnny Cash T-shirt" was a wise crack from their producer that lead to this track. Their song the year before I also loved - a low key performance (different vocalist) with string section that sounded just like a Bond theme. I guess this is the end result of gurl power?! -- best JtF

This song is good. What I'm worried of, though, is the staging, a lot of great songs are forgotten in the past eurovision contests due to the lackluster staging. Plus I don't think eurovision voters are not keen into lyricism of songs, so although I love this so much, I'm not sure if this will even qualify... I hope I'm wrong though.
