Carole wrote this song for James after hearing his song "Fire and Rain," in which he sings, "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend." I place those two songs among the essential songs of the '70s.

I think Beth is the best in her musical appreciation and graciousness as a teacher. I find most of the reaction coaches get stuck in showing off their technical knowledge yet lack a complete understanding of the rock pop genre. There’s one who stops after every note and completely misses the “ vibe” and “ groove” .

Interesting that Carole King "simply" accompanied James Taylor on piano without singing one note of her timeless tune. Curious what you thought of the electric bass player's scooping those low notes at just the right time. This was so well done. Bravo all!

There's another recording where Carole King and James Taylor sing the song as a duet. It's perhaps my favorite version. The two of them have been lifelong (platonic) friends and have occasionally sung the song together for decades. My family and I once sang the song in church accompanied by a slide show with paintings of Jesus. Picture the song as gospel verses with a message from God, it's works quite well.

In one of his concert videos, James thanked Carole for her generosity in letting him release it first, joking, "Of course, I didn't realize then that I would be singing it every night for the rest of my life." Then he called it "maybe the best pop song ever written." Carole, meanwhile, didn't write the lyrics for most of her songs, but she did for this. And she has said that the words just came through her from some other place. "I'll be the first one to say it's a great song because I don't feel like I wrote it."

I was lucky enough to hear her perform this in Hyde Park in 2015 when she played the Tapestry album end to end and she closed out the set with this song, getting the crowd to join in. Magnificent. The crowd were leaving the park afterwards and some small group would start singing this song and whole larger groups would join in, almost like a football crowd. I'll never ever forget it, it was real hairs on the back of the neck stuff. One of the greatest writers of her generation.

I was lucky enough to see him perform this live a few months ago. James Taylor is probably one of the humblest people I've ever heard of. And it was a very pleasant surprise to see that his son appears to be following in his father's footsteps as a performer.

Dad says this song was on the radio in the charts for both Calol King and James Taylor in the same year. He was the first artist to sing to Paul at the Apple Records Label by the Beatles. I took mom may 2 or 3 years ago--to see him. He still brings in a sizable crowd. After his small band performance he sat on the edge of the stage to chat with just anyone who was interested. What a Gentle Man. This is on Carol Kind's Tapestry album. Huge hit album that she never achieved after that. But has made her fortune writing for others. And now i know how how he creates his distinct sound.

Such a beautiful song. There is so many people that I miss that come to mind listening to it. Love both James and Carole. If I had an ounce of musical ability, I'd want to be like him. It was a shame that after they were together for so long only to have split, but they were still able to collaborate and perform together shows how strong the connection they had.

I don't physically see colours with sound but I instinctively associate musical keys with different colours. A is scarlet, A minor is crimson, D is royal blue, D minor is cobalt or prussian blue, E is golden/green, E minor a deeper leaf-green, C is white, Bb is pale blue etc. It doesn't get in the way of other imaginative associations that come from melodies, chord progressions or rhythms, it's just another layer to the mental landscape of how I experience music.Tone also plays a part; James Taylor's voice evokes some nice pastel shades of the colour palette.

I have Dyslexia and so anything visual is pretty much a no go. I don't have a very good visual imagination and I can't process visual information very quickly or accurately. However I pick up on aural information very fast (thankfully) - I can't sight read to save my life or imagine images clearly but play me a song a couple of times and it's locked in forever. The same with rhythm and words. It's amazing how diverse we all are but lovely how it means we can contribute to art in different ways.aa
