DokiZoki possible of course, just unlikely because it would defeat the purpose of the show. This series is for participating contestants to seek the ‘teachers’ to demo a cover...and in a different style and genre from its original, by random selection....the teachers have a couple of hours to rearrange the song in a different style and demo it live. Since it’s not their song and it’s a demo cover, no reason to try and perfect/auto tune it.

Hahaha China has always been very pro post production ever since shows like 我是歌手. It’s not that the Singers can’t sing, but making a good vocal track sound even better after post production has always been their aim for viewers to enjoy the show better. You should react to JJ Lin's 《领悟》which is also sung on the same show. This song is more on his vocal prowess but 《领悟》is one that pushes both his emotional and vocal skills to the maximum. Singers don't really have both skills to such an astonishing degree but JJ sure has it

In《凤凰于飞》JJ pushes his vocal range closer to his limits, could be a good song to react to since there is a lot more falsetto and also a lower range (possibly baritone/bass). Also in 《我们的爱》he goes for a more rock-based style and there's a lot more glissandos.

The last phrase in the song is “除了你” (chu le ni) meaning “except you”. The entire sentence means “who can keep me lucid, except for you” = importance of his love to his life. Very great lyrics 😭💕

You analyzed JJ’s vowel manipulation exactly right. It’s actually very difficult for many mandarin speakers since the language is inherently flat in vowels. Some of the best mandarin singers came from English as first language, JJ being one of them. I didn’t know he came from Seth’s speech level method but makes perfect sense.
@kori228

@@danielx40 so a single vowel with no consonant at the end? and how does that make it difficult for vowel manipulation?
@danielx40
@danielx40 4 жыл бұрын
kori228 so, this singer JJ studied under a guy named Seth, who invented a method called speech-level singing. One of the technique is to make “Need” sound slightly like “Nerd”, or “Neeuud” in high registries. “ee” sounds makes a person’s mouth open too wide -it somehow causes a strain on the vocal cord. Opera singers and classic singers open their mouths more vertically, with jaws lowered. Regular people tend to squeeze out high notes. Usually sounds like “nay” and “nu” are easier to sing high without strain, while “ni” is more difficult. So when professionals sing “ni”, they make it sound a bit like “neeuu”. In Chinese the sound “ni” (neee) is more distinct than in English, so it is more difficult to change the vowel while saying the right words.

Thanks for your expert and professional reaction. It was great! It’s a pity that you couldn’t understand what he was singing about, otherwise, you would understand why there are high tunes, auto tunes and low tunes in his singing to effect the emotions and his interpretation of the song. You’re right that this song is not his own. This song was selected during this variety show where he was selected by a contestant to re-interpret, re-arrange and re-package the whole within 3 hours, including the rehearsal. Hi Matt, many thanks for reacting to this song. I have heard many who said how excellent JJ sings but you gave a really great analysis and I have certainly learnt a lot from this reaction video! Hope you will react to more songs by JJ so that we can learn to appreciate his techniques more. I will be going to his concert tour in Singapore this weekend and will definitely look out for some of the techniques you mentioned here. Happy holidays to you and your family! 💜

In Singapore generally everyone completes their studies before pursuing their career but JJ Lin decided to drop out of college and went to pursue music professionally and made it in Taiwan and China. He really made it!!

Jason Chow I’ve just watched his latest one in KL. His vocals are as strong as ever. In fact more powerful then his Singapore show in 2018 (but then again he did 4 shows in a row and I went to the 4th show). Which concert you watched that made you think he deteriorated? Or did you mix up JJ Lin with Jay Chou lol

Jason Chow with this statement I can only conclude you’re a troll lol. “He’s bad at singing” HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! You know if you wanna hate on JJ Lin, you shouldn’t use his vocals as a weakness. No one would agree with you. That’s HOW GOOD he is. Why would you hate on someone that’s at a higher level in life then you ever will be? lol!

Hey Ramsey, that was an interesting reaction to JJ's rendition of the song. He is an amazing singer n he gets better every time! Just went to his concert on 22 Dec in Singapore. He was so so so good. I'm started formal singing class not too long ago. N I think u give good tips in the reaction. I will note them down n use them w gratitude.

I just came across this video and I want to thank you for explaining the singing techniques that JJ uses in his song.. It has help me to appreciate his performance on a more profound level. I like this reaction video over the videos that makes superficial comments on how good or amazing or beautiful a performance is... yours is very informative! I really enjoyed it and i look forward to more!

“What good would it be for me to win the whole world but lose you instead” -would be my literal (and lengthy...kudos to the grammar of Chinese haha) translation of the song’s title. “How did you lose the world” kind of has it backwards... (it’s very natural English that has just happens to have not much to do with the title of this particular song...) Every time I see the title of this song it reminds me of this verse from the Bible: “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (the Chinese translation matches the song title more closely in terms of sentence structure) Incidentally, JJ is a devout Christian and I think (but am not sure) that Terry Lin (Lin ZhiXuan) who probably wrote this song is too. Btw: JJ Lin is from Singapore and based in Taiwan. And very popular across the Chinese-speaking world :D

This song means something like so what if I win the world, when I lost you. Hope it helps :) I am a huge JJ Lin fan too and have been collecting all his albums. This TV show is interesting how popular singers give a different take on a song.

It's my first time watching you and i was amazed at how you perfectly analysed even the emotion JJ Lin was trying to bring across at the end despite language barrier. Im impressed! Shows how good you are at analysing, and how good JJ Lin is as a singer too of course. Ps. Im not a fan of his but I'm Singaporean, and prolly a fan of his and yours from now on 😂

An informative review of JJ's performance. Pretty sure he didn't use auto-tune because that was actually his unique vibrato. Check out his other live performances. He doesn't need auto-tune, auto-tune needs him.

JM reporting here he has the autotune ability within himself (the Walking CD after all) which is evident in his other live performances. Also this is also a show that lets the singers to edit a song within 2 hours and perform them.
