DokiZoki possible of course, just unlikely because it would defeat the purpose of the show. This series is for participating contestants to seek the ‘teachers’ to demo a cover...and in a different style and genre from its original, by random selection....the teachers have a couple of hours to rearrange the song in a different style and demo it live. Since it’s not their song and it’s a demo cover, no reason to try and perfect/auto tune it.

The two highest, strongest lines ”输了你” (shu le ni) and “失去你” (shi qu ni) both mean “losing you”. That’s why they are aptly the most emotional lines in the song. You analyzed JJ’s vowel manipulation exactly right. It’s actually very difficult for many mandarin speakers since the language is inherently flat in vowels. Some of the best mandarin singers came from English as first language, JJ being one of them. I didn’t know he came from Seth’s speech level method but makes perfect sense.
@kori2285 жыл бұрын
what do you mean by flat in vowels?
@danielx405 жыл бұрын
kori228 “NEEEEE~”
@kori2285 жыл бұрын
@@danielx40 so a single vowel with no consonant at the end? and how does that make it difficult for vowel manipulation?
@danielx405 жыл бұрын
kori228 so, this singer JJ studied under a guy named Seth, who invented a method called speech-level singing. One of the technique is to make “Need” sound slightly like “Nerd”, or “Neeuud” in high registries. “ee” sounds makes a person’s mouth open too wide -it somehow causes a strain on the vocal cord. Opera singers and classic singers open their mouths more vertically, with jaws lowered. Regular people tend to squeeze out high notes. Usually sounds like “nay” and “nu” are easier to sing high without strain, while “ni” is more difficult. So when professionals sing “ni”, they make it sound a bit like “neeuu”. In Chinese the sound “ni” (neee) is more distinct than in English, so it is more difficult to change the vowel while saying the right words.

“What good would it be for me to win the whole world but lose you instead” -would be my literal (and lengthy...kudos to the grammar of Chinese haha) translation of the song’s title. “How did you lose the world” kind of has it backwards... (it’s very natural English that has just happens to have not much to do with the title of this particular song...) Every time I see the title of this song it reminds me of this verse from the Bible: “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” (the Chinese translation matches the song title more closely in terms of sentence structure) Incidentally, JJ is a devout Christian and I think (but am not sure) that Terry Lin (Lin ZhiXuan) who probably wrote this song is too. JM reporting here he has the autotune ability within himself (the Walking CD after all) which is evident in his other live performances. Also this is also a show that lets the singers to edit a song within 2 hours and perform them.

Hey Ramsey, that was an interesting reaction to JJ's rendition of the song. He is an amazing singer n he gets better every time! Just went to his concert on 22 Dec in Singapore. He was so so so good. I'm started formal singing class not too long ago. N I think u give good tips in the reaction. I will note them down n use them w gratitude.

I don't think there would be any autotuning needed as JJ Lin has a very high expectation in hitting every single key in his performances

The song name translation to English should be "What is the point of Winning the World if I lose you."

It's my first time watching you and i was amazed at how you perfectly analysed even the emotion JJ Lin was trying to bring across at the end despite language barrier. Im impressed! Shows how good you are at analysing, and how good JJ Lin is as a singer too of course. Ps. Im not a fan of his but I'm Singaporean, and prolly a fan of his and yours from now on 😂

I don't think he uses autotune for that part, Chinese singers tend to make that wobbly sound in a lot of their songs especially at the end of the sentence of the lyrics because, from a lot of Chinese singer/instructors, this sounds nicer. You can check up some Chinese instructors:)

From the perspective of an audio engineer who has worked on these types of shows before, what you're watching is probably the rebroadcast version of the performance. What this means is tuning and editing was done prior to the rebroadcast and what you're hearing is at least a bit (if not quite a bit) different from what was sung on that day. That's why every note sounds perfectly in tune. This is not a stab at JJ's singing though. He's a phenomenal performer with amazing vocal abilities.

Not to mention that with today's computing power, autotune can be done real-time, and let's not forget the quintessential compression, EQing etc. However, I do believe that JJ has raw talent and could keep his pitch well.
