Nash has such a beautiful, bell-like voice - so difficult for a male singer to sing this way. It is absolutely perfect for this tune. And this is definitely a live recording to a backing track. Put it side by side with the studio version and the differences are obvious.

Always enjoyed this song Beth! Liked your comments and reaction also. Had the pleasure of meeting Johnny Nash back in the late 80's or early 90's. I took my family to eat at Benihana and we were seated with Johnny Nash and his family. He and his family were very nice and we had a very enjoyable evening. Take care Beth!

I’ve heard & loved this song most of my life but never really connected it to Johnny Nash, in fact I think I had it by someone else entirely. But I also never noticed the reggae beat under it until you mentioned it just now, lol. Once heard, it’s so obvious that I don’t know where my head was at! He was a cutie, just look at those dimples. 😄

The vocals were definitely live. Toward the end you can hear variations that weren't on the recording played on the radio. Real live music was standard on the Midnight Special TV show. But anyway, good job, Beth.

One of the very few Jamaican artists to hit the US charts in the '60s. The others were Desmond Dekker with "The Israelites" and Millie Small with "My Boy Lollipop." Both of those had more of a ska/reggae feel , as opposed to the somewhat slicker pop feel of "I Can See Clearly Now." Then, of course, in the '70s Jamaican music swept the US and the world, with Jimmy Cliff and the soundtrack of the film "The Harder They Come" and the ascendance of Bob Marley, among others.

One thing I find great in this song is it doesn't sound like the tempo is really fast but it is. Reggae music has the big accent on the third note of the 4/4 bar and if you count to the backing track you'll see the tempo is actually high bpm. Generally reggae has very little on the first beat, something on the second, big on the third and same as second on the 4th. If you count to four and say one softly, then two bit louder, three lot louder and four same as two you get the feel :)

Yes, he SEEMS to be singing live to the recorded track. However, this vocal is different from the recorded 'hit' version. I suppose he could have pre-recorded his vocal just for this performance. But, I don't think so. In order to be a featured performer on the Midnight Special at that time, it was a stipulation that you had to perform live. And, if you listen to the very end, he keeps singing for a bit even after the music track fades. I don't know...I'm about 80/20 that it was live. BTW, R.I.P. Johnny Nash, just 2 years ago at age 80.

I was interested to hear you remark that you hadn't noticed that this song was reggae before, but since you now knew you could hear the clear 'one-drop' rhythm. (You didn't say on-drop, but that is the reggae rhythm that is the name for the rhythm that 'drops' (ie doesn't play) the one beat from from a four beat bar). My experience is similar. I remember listening to since I was a child; I think I had it on one of those KTel compilation albums. But I don't think I realised that it was reggae until I got betrothed to a Jamaican lady. (To give some context to the timeline, I am 62 and I met my wife about quarter of a century ago).

He's definitely singing live here as some of his vocal nuances aren't on the single. It was also policy on The Midnight Special that acts perform live. I think the backing track is from the single, though. He wasn't always a Reggae artist. Johnny had been knocking around the bottom of the Top 100 pop charts for about ten years before this became a hit. From what I understand, it was a trip to Jamaica and Antigua where he first heard Bob Marley and the Wailers and felt the music inside himself. Nash was one of the main proponents of bringing Marley and Reggae to a wider audience, though it already had a growing fanbase in the UK beginning about 1968.

Hey, how are you? Sorry to intrude like this on a video that has nothing to do with Brazil, but I saw that you chose beautiful songs from here before, but maybe you didn't realize that you were missing what is probably one of the most beautiful voices we have. Maria Bethania. I would like to suggest, if I may, these two songs: "Não Dá Mais Pra Segurar (Explode Coração)" (a cappella) and/or "Sonho meu" (accompanied by the band) /watch?v=fTNekwoISyI /watch?v=c9OfCE7Hf5A Again, sorry for the intrusion.

most of Nash's music falls under rocksteady not reggae. i don't know the genre this is but it's not reggae. the guitars and bass rhythm is not emphasized during the offbeat. so triplets are not needed to divide each of two beats into three since the drums do not need to 'one drop' (only 3 snare hits per measure) so that the music is played in unison for the last downbeat. this resolution feels similar to playing during the first downbeat: this has more in common with New Orleans rhythm and blues of the 1950's than Orange Street music.
