FUN FACT: It's actually the oposite, the slow emotional part at the beginning tells how he always lived a happy life "Until I met you" (which is the song title), then when the mariachi starts playing he sings: "[until I met you] I saw the pain in life,..I won't lie, I was very happy, but with very little love". Then when the song gets upbeat he sings how late he understood he shouldn't have fell for her and how bad/mean she was to him. *Fucking Masterpiece!*

Anecdote: this was recorded in a concert that was a huuge milestone for JuanGa... he performed that night at the Belle Arts Museum that before JuanGa was only reserved for more "sophisticated" / classical artists (ballet, opera, philarmonic, etc.). He asked for decades to perform there, and he was denied: the reason is that his music wasn't considered to be 'at the level' of the hall, it was too popular, not 'belle arts' enough. I remember the Mexican fans of him got angry every time he was refused to perform there. And then one day, there was a new head in the Department of Culture (that controls the Museum) and he granted JuanGa permission to perform there to celebrate his 25 years of musical career. I remember how the news and the event itself was a massive accomplishment for both him and the public: the event finally gave him and the public the acknowledgement of JuanGa's music being an art worthy of playing in that hall. So we all celebrated that hystorical day as if it was a triumph, for us the public and for him. When he passed away that same hall held a memorial for him (actually the public started gathering there to say goodbye to him even before the family or the authorities said anything about holding a memorial there - once more, the public decided that that hall was the rightful place to say goodbye to him). JuanGa and his fans made all the art snobs opened their doors to him, to his music, to us and to our music taste.

I just remembered that there was a talk at the time wondering whether or not JuanGa's fans 'would behave properly' at that venue (in that Hall, you are not supposed to stand up and dance, but to stay in your seat and clap at appropriate times haha). Actually in the video you can see that the fans are eager to stand up and they are dancing on their seats but they did not stand up because they knew that if the did, that would have triggered negative comments to them and to Juanga. His fans loved him, so they would not stand up as to not affect him and his chances to play there again. That is also the reason why Juanga at one point in the song when he is about to dance says to the audience: no me provoquen, making reference to "we need to behave in here".

Here I translated the song for you. Enjoy it. Until I met you I didn’t know about sadness, nor tears or nothing that would make me cry. I only knew tender caresses because when I was little, thats what mother taught me. That’s what mother taught me, that and many other things. I never suffered, I never cried. I was very happy. I lived very well. I lived distinctly, something beautiful, something divine, full of life. I knew about happiness, life’s beauty, but not about loneliness, not about loneliness. Of that and many things. I never suffered, I never cried. I was very happy. I lived very well. Until I met you. I saw life with pain. I can’t lie I was happy. Regardless of little love. And too late I understood, that I never should’ve loved you. Because now I think of you, so much more than yesterday, so much more. Until I met you I started to live life in pain, I can’t lie I was happy. Even though there was little love. And too late I understood, that I shouldn’t have loved you. Because now I think of you, so much more than yesterday, so much more. I never suffered, but unfortunately in a night like this when I found you. Now tell me was it worth it, that I met you because I don’t want to see you. You were bad to me, yes very bad, that’s why I don’t want to see you never again. (It repeats) I don’t want to see you (the chorus repeats)

Creo que puede mejorarse esa traducción. Lo comento no como crítica cangreja, sino para que en futuros comentarios y reacciones de otras personas se vaya puliendo la traducción =) And too late I understood, that I never should’ve loved you. And too late I understood... that I shouldn't love you. Y aquí aunque tampoco estás mal, creo que queda un poco mejor así: I can’t lie I was happy. Regardless of little love. EDIT: I'm not lying, I was happy, althought with very little love Saludos!

To Beth and everyone else who doesn't speak spanish, I translated the lyrics of the song. Lyrics: I didn't know about sorrow or tears, Nor anything else that would made me cry, I only knew about affection and tenderness, Because since I was a little kid, That's what my mother thaught me about, About that and so much more I never suffered , I never cried, I was content, I used to live an amazing life, I used to live something so unique, so beautiful Something sublime, full of hapiness, I only knew about joys, abouth the beauty of life, But I didn't know about solitude, About that and so much more, I never suffered , I never cried, I was content, I used to live an amazing life... Untill I met you I saw life through pain, I don't lie by saying I was happy, Even with very little love from you, And too late I realized How I shouldn't have loved you, Because now I think about you More than I did yestarday, a lot more, I never suffered, I never cried, I was happy But then I found you, I don't want you to tell me If it was worth it or not To have met you, Because I don't believe you anymore, And you were evil, Yes so evil towards me, That's why I don't want to see you, I don't wan to see you ever again.

I just want to clarify that Juan Gabriel wrote this song to his mother. She never really understood him nor supported him while he was growing up, hence why he felt really alone and quite sad deep inside. He was always looking for her approval and always look up to her, but she used to reject him a lot, and that pretty much summs up their dinamic. His older sister was the one who took care of him the most and really cared about him, to the point that he thought for a long time she was his mother, and he called her that way.

His mom also did not visit him at the orphanage. Almost all the kids got Sunday visit, he did not. That’s where he learned how to play guitar and to write. When he was older and released from the orphanage, he went back home where his mother order all his brothers to give him a beating that left him bed bound for a few days. They had to hold his sister from defending him. All because he did not want work the land and wanted to be a musician. Great job with the translation.

She definitely got the core of the emotions that were playing out in the song. She is very intuitive. She may not have known what, where, when, or why but she definitely understood how he was feeling. Of course it helps when the story teller is a natural born performer. I wish she could understand the lyrics as HER native tongue. She would be totally blown away by their meaning and feeling and story being conveyed. The lyric is just as impressive (if not more) than his singing and performance. She would then understand why the emotions where such a roller coaster. If I'm not mistaken, this song was about his birth mother... which makes the song even MORE emotional.
