For anyone who is upset of her pointing out the "tha" sound, I think it is her giving us a free vocal lesson. I am pretty sure if Kat hears this herself she will be happy for the pointers.

@ozzfer62575 жыл бұрын
The problem with Tara's critique is that she thinks the word "the" is pronounced "tha", and she's just plain wrong. If you google it, its correct pronunciation is "thuh". So, aside from calling out a word that's actually being pronounced correctly, she's actually teaching her listeners to give the word an incorrect pronunciation. She should have done her homework first.
@saint86975 жыл бұрын
Agree!!! @Ozz Fern - you're missing the point of difference between singing "the" in pop vs classical music. You searched how to pronounce english but not how to sing it in a classical genre! You think Tara don't know that? It's their language.
@ozzfer62575 жыл бұрын
@@saint8697 .... 2 things... you go listen to how Michael Bolton sings the song (oh by the way, he's the original).... and then, listen to Julie Andrews, she's classically trained and she just happens to be the quintessential English singer..... oh, and I think English is her native tongue too, in fact I'm pretty sure of that. Why not start with the song "The Sound Of Music"?... then go listen to so many of her other songs.... you'll get what I mean.
I frickin love how you can listen to something fantastic like this, and appreciate it, and yet pick out the things that can be better with precision and clarity!

Katrina is basically an untrained singer but she can sing difficult songs live for 3 hours non-stop and without a hint of tiredness in her voice in the last song. And most of the time she’s sitting down while singing them. She has a phenomenal technique.

Of course the breath control on those long belt notes are tough enough, but extra props for the fact that she's sitting too! I also give extra props since she normally has a strong accent when she speaks English and many times I'll hear people from non English speaking countries have trouble with pronunciation. Liked how you explained the enunciation differences in the different singing styles too. All constructive comments. Shows how even an awesome vocalist like Katrina can still learn a trick or too! Still my personal favorite cover of this song! Thank you thank you for this video! Xoxo

@XDXDXDXDXDXDXD6 жыл бұрын
People thinking that Tara is picking on Katrina's accent with her pronunciation of "the": YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT. You're right that it's nit picking , but you're missing the point of the critique. It's not an unfair criticism, it's basic vocal pedagogy. It's not an accent or pronunciation problem, it's a phonation, vocal resonance, and breath efficiency problem. When you're singing certain words, there's a huge difference between singing open and closed vowel sounds, especially in a language like English that has very hard, often closed, consonant sounds ("th" is a good one) that might start or end the word in a closed place. ESPECIALLY with words that have an "ee" sound, 99% of the time, you opt for the more "open" way to sing a word because you're singing and not talking; the open pronunciation is better because it results in a larger, brighter sound AND uses less air (because the singer is less closed). Unlearning how to say "theEEE" and instead singing "thAH" is one of the first, most important things you learn as a vocalist. EE is not only closed, but also super nasal. Pretty much every song has the word, and for this song, "the" is even one of the higher notes ("I can go THE distance"); you need to be efficient in delivering it. Is it nit picking? Kind of, Katrina definitely got through through her note in that half second just fine. That's something that just really sticks out and is so easily fixable, though; why sing the hard way when you can do it the easy way? Singing is all about being relaxed and easy. When your breathe isn't being efficiently allocated, you start getting sharp or flat. Tara points out "thousAHnd dreams" being better than "thousEHHnd dreams" at 2:29 for the same reason. "AH" is far more open phonation than "EH." To the untrained ear, there's no perceived difference, one would probably hear "thousand" either way. To a vocalist getting through a 3-4 minute banger like this one, though, it's so, so important to make sure you're never putting your breath up against more resistance or using more air than you absolutely need; you've got to get through the song without tiring your voice. This is an amazing performance, don't get me wrong. It's 99.99%, but Tara is definitely correct that those details matter. You might notice that a lot of non native English speakers have surprisingly good pronunciation when they sing English songs. Do you know why? It's because for most songs, there is generally an optimal, best way to pronounce and phonate their lyrics. Go listen to your favorite power vocalist singing in English on this channel, Bey, So Hyang, Ailee, Jessie J, whoever. I promise you won't hear a single "thEE". And if you do hear a "thEE", you'll notice they get off the word as quickly as possible. In other words with the "EE" sound, you might even notice a change in vocal register.
@accidentblackspot64 жыл бұрын
lol it literally makes no difference whatsoever - over the top critique.
@ojnab854 жыл бұрын
And if one listened further, we learn that her note about the vowels isn't to do with thinking it's because of Katrina's accent but potentially more Pop styles creeping into the otherwise more Disney/Broadway style performance. That it can be an intentional affectation in pop to sound cool or easy going, but that it can become unintentional. So, it does literally make a lot of difference and is not over the top critique like some people say.
@yvesordonio4 жыл бұрын
Yep. At this point, we can't fault Katrina because she hasn't the same professional training as Morisette, Sarah, Regine and the rest of professional singers we have are getting, so these little details that Tara noticed may not have even been pointed out to Katrina.
@ojnab854 жыл бұрын
@@yvesordonio And this is valuable to Katrina. It's also how we know the rest of the reaction which is mostly praise is worth anything. If Katrina has any vocal coaches working with her and they're not telling her the same things Tara mentioned here and more, they're not doing their jobs. Katrina probably wants to keep honing her craft and Tara probably understands that even if some comments do not. I'm mostly glad that most of us do know how to take criticism and aren't taking it like a personal attack like we were personally the ones singing. The so-called "peenoise" crowd is not representative of the Filipino audience. She's not reacting to these to bump up her viewership numbers by pandering to us, she's doing these because this is what she does and it is a genuine treat.
@MusicLover-sr5wr4 жыл бұрын
Kevin Huang Tara was just saying that Katrina have been trying to sound or emulating like a Disney musical and could’ve used the word “THE” as “DAHH” so it’s more open vowel cos that’s how more disney music sound like.not like broadway musical way “DUHH” miss Tara wasn’t pointing out about the accent but absolutely just saying if Katrina would’ve used specific pronunciation then it would’ve been suitable for what she started to sound like. And this also IMO Katrina wasn’t aware maybe 🤔 cos all she was doing is serving that beautiful voice on her own way ❤️ I didn’t even know that the word “THE” should sound different in Disney and broadway. Thanks for letting us know miss Tara! 😘

Guys, please take no offense. Ms. Simon is very generous giving us free vocal coaching. In the choir that I sing, we will first read the piece, we also count the notes. Vowel's and breathing at the right spot is very important. The shape of your mouth and how you open is important. I don't know much about pop music though, because we are trained in classical. Keep it up coach!

Thank you finally you reacted to it.. Love you. U are super master when it comes to vocal and really knows what ur are talking about. Some of other youtuber claims here and there but their opinions are out of fact.
