The great thing about "Buonasera, signore e signori" is that so many people who don't speak Italian know what it means. And by making the curtsy gesture, he presented himself as the king of the stage, welcoming the audience in *his* domain. My mouth literally fell open after this gesture. It strongly reminded me of Freddy Mercury, who also owned the stage.

ACCURATE TRANSLATION FOR THOSE WHO ASKED: They have no idea what I'm talking about My clothes are dirty with mud My fingers are yellow from cigarette stains The cigarette I'm holding while I walk Sorry, but I really do believe That I can make this final leap And even though the road is uphill That's what I've been preparing for Good evening, Ladies & Gents, out with the actors you better get ready for this you better shut up and behave cause people here are weird, like dealers Too many nights I've been shut out It's time for me to kick the doors down I'm looking up just like a climber Sorry mom if I'm always out, but I'm out of my mind - but I'm different from them And you're out of your mind - but you're different from them We're out of our minds - but we're different from them I've written pages upon pages, with sweat and tears, These men in their cars never try to climb up the waterfalls I've written it on a tombstone, there's no God in my home but if you can figure out the meaning of time you'll climb back up from obscurity And no wind can stop our natural power The wind inebriates you if you feel it from the right point of view With a pair of wax wings on my back I'll fly for that high If you want to stop me, try again - try and cut my head, because I'm out of my mind - but I'm different from them And you're out of your mind - but you're different from them We're out of our minds - but we're different from them They talk, unfortunately people talk They have no clue what they're talking about Just carry me to where I can float on my own Because here I'm out of air now chorus

Fun fact: lyrics to "Zitti e buoni" won the Eurostory Best Lyrics Award 2021, which was chosen not only by the public but also by an international expert jury made of writers, journalists, songwriters, and translators. So it's very much not nonsensical, it's poetic. But to fully appreciate it you need to either know Italian or read a good non-literal translation.

Great analysis, however a small note: the lyrics aren't that nonsensical. The problem is that translating literally line by line doesn't make any sense, especially considering some Italian figures of speech. And in general, they are not really direct, they need to be analyzed to understand the context and what he's talking about. TLDR it's about pursuing dreams and being yourself ignoring what people have to say. "You better shut up and be quiet" is basically "shut up and stop annoying me". note: "touching your nuts" is a superstitious gesture in Italy to "invoke" good luck, he's basically saying that they have to be prepared for their arrival.

Yeah it’s true. “You’d better start touching your nuts” is the translation of the verse. Touching the nuts is a superstitious gesture to bring good luck: men used to do it when a funeral procession would pass by or an ambulance. It can be seen as poor taste, but it’s not as used anymore as a gesture (touching a piece of iron or wood is now preferred hahaha) but the phrase “to touch one’s nuts” is still used as a way to say “prepare yourself/protect yourself for what is coming”. Especially in the Rome area where Maneskin is from!

*Edited: I changed the third line of the first verse after a mistake was pointed out to me :) thank you Gilberto Sartorel **Edited again: “Fuori gli attori” is a phraseolgic expression and means “let the actors enter the scene / let the show begin” A few corrections: Damiano's name is pronounced Dam-yano The Italian word for fiancee and girlfriend, is the same, he is not actually engaged Thirdly, the lyrics does make sense in Italian; what you saw was a line-by-line translation Rough translation (Note that Italian is my third language so may not be 100% accurate, but its definitely more accurate than what you read :) ) Verse 1: They don't know what I'm talking about you're dirty, bro (roman slang), from mud yellow from a cig (as in cigarette) between the fingers*, I'm walking with a cig I'm sorry, but I really believe that I can make this jump and even if the road is leading uphill in this moment I'm training for it (Basically he is saying he, and people like him are misunderstood. The jump and uphill road is a metaphor for them fighting stereotypes. You'll notice in his performance that he acts out these things, e.g., he is inviting the audience with him on the journey at the beginning and then he acts out with his hand when he says the fourth line) Verse 2: Good evening, ladies and gentle men (this is where he curtsies, again he is acting out the words), out with the actors (i.e. he doesn't want fake people around) You better touch/hold-onto your balls (a thing you do for luck in Italy) It's best for you to be quiet and good (Name of song translates to that; quiet and good, which is something they are not since they go against stereotypes) Here, people are weird, like drug dealers Too many nights I have been locked outside (think about this metaphorically) Now I'm kicking down these doors I look up at the climbers (role models perhaps? those that climb to the top) So I'm sorry mom that I'm always out, but Chorus: I'm out of my mind, but not like everyone else You're out of your mind, but not like everyone else We're out of our minds, but not like everyone else We're out of our minds, but not like everyone else Verse 3: I've written pages and pages, I've seen salt then tears These men in cars, and don't climb the rapids It's written on a tombstone, in my house there is no God But if you find the reason of time, you will rise from your oblivion And there is no wind that stops natural power And from the right point of view, you'll feel the thrill of the wind With wax wings on my spine, I will seek those heights If you want to stop me, try again, try to cut my head of, because (This is just about how he will reach for his goals, how he works hard and how no one can stop him) Chorus again Finally, the most important part of the song in my opinion: Talk, unfortunately people talk, They don't know what ('the fuck' is added in the uncensored version) they're saying You bring me to where I float, Because here I can't breath Essentially, he is discussing stereotypes and how they are here to break them. People will always assume things about them (e.g. when everyone thought he did drugs is a perfect example of his line 'unfortunately people talk, they don't know what they're saying') He is here to climb to the top, he is bringing us with him, and he isn't letting anyone hold him back, and the 'touch your balls' again, is for luck in Italy, and basically we need luck for this difficult journey to change the world. I want to tell you also that they are already extremely successful in Italy, and are born in 1999 and 2000. I recommend Moriro da Re by them as well as Torna a Casa. I also like a cover they did of an Italian song called Vengo dalla Luna. I hope you see this!

In the second verse, when he cursties, Damiano sings "E buonasera signore e signori", something like "And good evening ladies and gentlemen" ... He sings about the many people who fake (attori) and just shut up and be good/quiet (Zitti e buoni) and they hate that. They want to be who they are, they are different, we're all different, but they don't want to be anyone else.

Uhm, finally?? 🤣 As if we never listened to foreign songs before... Soldi from last year was awesome, furthermore, i listen to shit tonnes of music that isn't English or Dutch... So yeah, nah. It's the same with movies, and music in foreign language is just as fun as long as its done right, think of French, Ukrainian (god loved their entry this year!). But also Korean, Spanish, mandarin, Japanese, basically any language can create good songs, as long as the beat, vocals, and their way of storytelling is good. You'll get listeners. 🥰

First of all, that translation is inaccurate, thats why its nonsensical. Yes, the main ideas are kind of jumping around, but the lyrics do have a meaning. The song is about how others can throw mud at you, try to discredit you, but if you are being yourself, getting good at what you want to be doing - you will prevail. The chorus is mainly about the fact that people are out of their minds, they are crazy. But being sort of different and ina way crazy yourself doesnt have to be a bad thing. And then the "parla, la gente purtroppo parla" part towards the end is mainly about the pressure you can be under, when others are talking too much about the things they dont know nothing about (like the whole drugs thing, when people decided that he was guily, even without evidence and most of the surrounding facts hinting about him not even being able to do drugs at that moment), and the pressure is described in the song as...well, not being able to breath, lacking air...so he is asking the recipient of the song to help him get to a place where he can breath, not be under constant pressure of people talking nonsense. Im pretty sure that the place where Maneskin can breath is the stage. Its about being young, different and being judged by society for it. Its pretty fitting for the band, I think they are living their songs.

As vocal coach my exptations was an analisys about the performance. The breath control (amazing), the rap part where he speak so fast (very difficult), the switch in the rytm (angry, fast, sweet, high, slow, all in one song). About the show this is out of a vocal coach contest, I mean, the show is a great strategy, very smart: The back door open with him invite the people in he's world, the bow with the "good evening, ladies and gentleman" with class and charme, interact with all the group's members as they are all in one and not in the shadow of the frontman. Mark clear that they are a group, very united, great and funny moment where all of them are in togheter. About lyric, in italian the expression "you better touch your nuts" is nothing to do with sex thing, is a say way to give "good luck", is a scaramantic move not a sexual one. All the lyric mean the people are very bad, people judge many times without knowledgment of what they are talking about, they talk becouse they are just bad people. Judgmenents about the dress, about style, about sexuality, about if you do something or if you not, if you do wrong or right (and the prove is in the final, with the false accuse of using cocaine, absurd that coincidence). That why "the way go in up (la strada in salita)", mean the way is hard don't mind if people complain at you, that don't mind theyr are right and you are not. "the people talk, don't know what still talking about, they just talk", is clear he mean believe in yourself, and if people talk let them talking about it, you just go ahead and keep your dream, that maybe only you can understand and them not at all. This group start playing in the streets, lost a contest in X Factor, ready know what mean lost a dream, them don't pretend to be rich and famous, and that is exactly why they have that pure charisma so contagious. I close this post with this last thing: After the lockdown, after all the shit about coronavirus, this is exactly what we need, someone with joy, energy, rock and the right sexappeal for remember to all of us things dies when them dies inside you.

Also, as far as the lyrics, I think it's normal that it doesn't make sense in English, just as an English song doesn't really make sense when translated in Italian. Obviously you get the general idea, but the little nuances are lost in the translation. If you want to listen more to them I'd suggest a song in English "Chosen". It was their first big hit. Another song in English is from their last album "I wanna be your slave". There is also a beautiful song sung in Italian which was a big hit here a few years back: "Torna a casa". Maybe I've found a better translation. The problem with translating this song is that it relays heavily on images to transmit feelings, and I can see this being a problem when transposed into another language. This version should be slightly better: Shut Up and Behave They don't know what I'm talking about Bruh, cloths dirty with mud Yellow on your fingers from cigs Walking about with a cig I'm sorry, but I'm so sure I can afford to take the leap Even if it's an uphill climb That's why I'm training And good evening, ladies and gentlemen Let the actors on the scene You better touch wood You better be quiet and behave People here are odd, like pushers I spent too many nights outdoors Now I'm going around kicking on these doors Looking upwards, like a climber So, I'm sorry mom if I'm always out, but I'm out of my mind, just not like them And you're out of your mind, just not like them We're out of our mind, just not like them We're out of our mind, just not like them No I have written pages over pages I've seen salt and then tears These men on their cars Unable to climb against the rapids Carved on a gravestone "There's no god in my home" But if you understand the meaning of time You'll rise back up from your oblivion And no wind can stop Natural power From the right point of view You can feel the euphoria brought by the wind With wings of wax on my back I'll seek out that height If you're trying to stop me, try again Try and cut my head off Because I'm out of my mind, just not like them And you're out of your mind, just not like them We're out of our mind, just not like them We're out of our mind, just not like them People talk, unfortunately They talk, and they don't know what they're talking about Just take me where I can stay afloat 'Cause here I can't breathe People talk, unfortunately They talk, and they don't know what they're talking about Just take me where I can stay afloat 'Cause here I can't breathe People talk, unfortunately They talk, and they don't know what the fuck they're talking about Just take me where I can stay afloat 'Cause here I can't breathe But I'm out of my mind, just not like them And you're out of your mind, just not like them We're out of our mind, just not like them We're out of our mind, just not like them We're not like them

It's not non sensical ,it has a deep sense . He basically says that there are tons of people ready to gossip and to judge ,but he doesn't care , ( talk , people unfortunately talk , they don't know what they are talking about , you take me on the floating cause here I can't breath ) , and also the "I am out of my mind but different from them ) shows the pride on not wanting to conform . Unfortunately translation not always give the vibe of the real meaning of a song . For us Italians it's pretty easy to get the meaning of it . And its meaning is so real if you think what someone insinuated ( people unfortunately talk , they don't know what the fuck are taking about ...) About him . So it was nearly predicted .

More than 'proverbial' it's metaphorical? Like the uphill thing is quite a common metaphor, like "the road to success is uphill", which I think is a common metaphor in english as well though... Hey, I'm Italian :) really enjoyed your reaction! If you're going to react to more of their music I would suggest you these songs: "Torna a casa", "Morirò da re", "20 anni". Well, the whole "Teatro d'Ira Vol.1" album is pretty great. Definetly check out "Coraline" because it's such a wondeful emotional song! One of my favorites! The album mainly deals with mental health issues, expecially for the young generation, freedom of expression, dealing with angst and frustration about the current situation and the way the young generation is percieved and ignored, and proving the haters wrong. Also, I've noticed that the English translation of "Zitti e buoni" doesn't compare at all with the Italian lyrics, and that is because it's a very literal translation. That's why it doesn't make sense. Most of their lyrics have a very strong Roman accent and they also use terms from Roman dialect, so you would get why it won't have the same meaning or musicality even if the lyrics were in generic Italian. Accent and diction sound so strong and sharp mainly because of that, because Damiano has a very strong Roman accent, and I really like that they decided to keep their Roman cultural roots in their songs because they sound way more intresting artistically!

There is so much more talent out there in the world and its great to watch. Love Damiano and Victoria

The message of the lyrics is so clear in Italian, the English translation just doesn’t work the same, but the original is SO powerful :)

I think the lyrics got a little lost in translation, in Italian they make much more sense. The message is really nice because it is an anthem for not caring what haters and other people say

Trust me, the lyrics make perfect sense in Italian! :) But it's very informal Italian bordering on slang. For example, the sentence "you better touch your nuts" is an Italian idiom that basically means: you better touch wood/hope for good luck.

As someone fluent in both languages I can definitely say that the meanings were lost in translation But take it from me the lyrics were really good

It's a song about having your own ideas and way of life and not letting other's opinions to get in the way. (Sort of) The quality of the music is so amazing. Really powerful and clean rock with a 21st century touch. "Rock-'n'-roll never dies" he said while receiving the award. It's just reborn.

The song didn't win because of sexappeal, it won because it is such a good song and their performance was just amazing

Personally I feel the reason Italy won is partly because it's great music but also because it wasn't simply a performance for Eurovision but a genuine gig. It was as though we were taken back in time to enjoy pre-Covid live music. They write the music, they're passionate about it, they're genuine, they seem kind people, & all that makes it work. This is why it's enjoyed by people who aren't traditional rock fans as well as those of us who love rock & metal. Edit to add: I forgot to say before that the lyrics make sense in Italian. The translations are not brilliant but they are difficult to translate into English, as they're full of imagery & idioms. I suspect that even a professional translator would struggle without using lots of footnotes. (I have worked as a translator & interpreter, although Italian isn't my strongest foreign language.)

Lmao the literal translation (meaning wise) of "vi conviene toccarvi i coglioni" is "it's better if you touch wood", so the paragraph is something like " Now it's our turn, make way and watch out, 'cause everyone is weird here and so are we". For Eurovision it was changed in "Vi conviene non fare più errori" (" it's better if you don't make any mistake")

I'm glad that you are going to listen to other things by them because they are really interesting. Considering that they are only 20/22 years old it seems like they were born to do that. A perfect mixture of charisma, talent, energy, stage skill s and presence. We needed something like that in Italy. I look forward to your next reaction, maybe some live performance by them not only the music videos...they are even better! Bye from Italy!

I think that the stage presence and the charisma of these 4 guys (the lead singer in particular) is incredible, and what brought them to their victory. Also, even more incredible is that they range from 20 to 22 . They are so young, so there is a lot of potential for even more growth. On a side note, they do have few songs in English. If you wanna have a listen, I really love "I wanna be your slave"
