Marcelito's story is nearly as amazing as his voice. His mother rejected him at birth and custody was given to his father (they had separated), unfortunately his father was serving a lengthy prison sentence, so little baby Marcelito spent the first 2 years of his life in prison with his father. He was then adopted by a prison guard, but it was not a happy childhood and at 9 years old he discovered they were not his real parents and he ran away. He survived by selling food snacks on the city streets. He says he learnt to sing with two voices (not uncommon in the Philippines) as a way to combat the loneliness. He earned extra by singing in bars and cafe's. He met a girl, fell in love and they married. They now have a child of their own, and he has been reconciled to his birth father. He entered Philippines Got Talent last year 2016, and of course won it hands down. He has turned his life around and I am so happy for him.

@@cliveang1577 Great catch and admonishing comment! Quite a lot of fictional embellishment compared to the life story Marcelito and his wife told at his first performance on AGT. His mother abandoned him at age 7 (while his father was in prison) and he grew up alone on the streets. No mention of being adopted or running away from an adoptive home. He was reunited with his father and family at PGT.

You are a great vocal coach! I have heard other vocal coaches reacting to Marcelito's performance and none of them could point out his imperfections with so much accuracy the way you did. I am not a vocal coach by any stretch, but I think I have a good ear, and for some reason I had noticed pretty much the same things you did, though I would not have been able to verbalize them the way you did . On the other hand, considering that Marcelito has never had any vocal training, he is pretty amazing. Would be nice if you could be his vocal coach!

Take those headphones off of him and put him in a nice echoy room and he will sing it on a perfect pitch from the beginning till the end. My guess is that he just needed some time to get used to the headphones, that he cannot hear himself live, but only trough the headphones - I have the same issue. It takes some time for the brain to get used to it. If he learned how to sing on his own, then most likely he wasn't using headphones and microphones. later he has no pitch issues till the very end (just few notes then). Watch his face - he can hear very well himself when he is off of the key, because you can see when he is on the note, his face is calm, but when he is pitchy, his eyes go from side to side.

Forgive me for being a grinch #Tara but the guy never had formal voice training. He was living on the street till he joined and became Philippines Got Talent Grand Winner. One thing to consider is his ethnicity (the province where he originated from) creates the tone that in the ears of natives would sound sharp/flat. I suggest watching ELLEN where he guested and you would know how he rose from humble abode. Lastly, for someone who doesn't speak a fluent english he is ABLE to nail the song that even DIVAS couldn't do and perform (they just lip-synced) Especially singing 2 voices at a time.. Kudos to Marcelito Pomoy!
@eddivinagracia1430

Thanks for this enlightenment, Bill. And perhaps, even if Marcelito was formally trained, no school could ever train him to sing both as male and female, alternately with such finesse. English is our second language in the Philippines, that has an impact on how some of the Filipino singers place and modify vowels to sound more refined. I still appreciate #Tara for her insights. How I wish Tara could collaborate with Marcelito one day.

@@ecjjce7315 magic johnson isnt saying anything about tara's ability, he is saying whether or not a singer comes from humble origins is irrelevant to how a vocal coach should judge a performance. Whilst knowing they come from more humble origins does make this more impressive compared to someone like Dimash who has been trained the entirety of his life, it doesn't make it better in finesse/quality, and as a vocal coach Taras job is to make people proficient in singing, judging people technically has nothing to do with their backstory.

Always looking beautiful and always on point Tara! He guested on Ellen Show about a week ago and talked about his real life struggles in the Philippines and sang this song. Now let's talk about the degree of difficulty of what just happened here shall we? lol First off, he's singing LIVE, with just one take...ONE. Then he's sitting down the entire time! Then he switches voices back and forth effortlessly with no time to breathe. While all these are happening he's singing in Italian (which he doesn't speak) and English but his native language is Filipino. To top it all off, HE IS SELF-TAUGHT while being HOMELESS!!! He already won pgt 2011 and right now its already 2020. You still think he haven't heard of vocal coaching before? He had one for sure. Please don't make it a big deal though. Once your voice is your asset, I know for a fact that you'll need voice training etch... So saying he haven't had a vocal coaching before is a lame excuse. That excuse only works when he's still fresh, raw during pgt days but nope, he's already ripe from the experiences and he had been part of asap before. So I disagree.

As a polyglot I can assure you that just changing from one language to another, you change a lot more. The thought process is different, the breathing is different and yes, even the voice changes. This guy here not only changes from one language to another, which he does great without a noticeable accent, he changes his voice completely. This is something that I think he would not be able to do if he had a vocal coach from a young age. Bravo

Of all the reactions from vocal coaches, I was waiting for somebody who would comment about when he is not supposed to cut words because he breathed somewhere when he shouldn't have. Finally, you called it out and yes I agree with you Tara. I do choral directing and that would be one of the things I would have done if I were to give a reaction on this performance.

Really great singer, really great observations. One thing Tara didn't mention, but I know she was thinking, was about the space he creates in his mouth. Especially in classical music, creating space in there for your ah's and ee's creates adds so much to the sound. But this is like dust on the Mona Lisa. Love this guy's voice.

Fun fact - the vaste majority of people who had trainings with 'Vocal Coaches' normally not make it very far in TalentShows like THEVoice, Idol, Superstar etc. allover the world. Why? Probably cause our hearts and souls are not interested in (often boring) perfection and theoretical explanations but more in the genuine expression of passion, feelings and emotions. Thats where the magic comes in and enthusiasm rise... Amazing and touching performance of Marcelito. Jeremy :)
@estera4176

If you think that it's enough to be passionate and feel every song to communicate with the audience, you're mistaken. You need to learn how to convey those feelings. And that's done through technique. How open the sound, how light or dark or breathy, vocal fry, build-up and so on, all these are tools to make people feel certain emotions. As a singer you can't afford to put your heart on a plate for the public every time. And being too emotional will ruin your control of your voice too. Singing is not just talent. It's sport and science and art combined. Talent needs to be developed to pass a certain level. And among other reasons, my guess is that all these talent shows being so fake, there aren't that many professionals participating, or if they are, they are not that appreciated because they don't have some sad backstories or some magical out of nowhere skills, but they have normal lives and hard work instead, so they are less entertaining and dramatic. That's what these shows care about, drama and views, not so much about talent.

I think at the end of the day they just want her to understand he's had little to no training, and keep that in mind while she's critiquing him. They want her to acknowledge that where he's at is incredible despite his lack of training. Cut him a little bit of slack in the things that he isn't doing well.
