I am a HK songwriter who writes more in the western pop style and I would like to reply and assure some of things Rozette mentioned. Yes I totally see how the repetition of the main hook reminisce western pop writing style. It is fairly uncommon for canto pop songs to have such repetition on the same note as cantonese has 9 tones (some said 6), making it especially hard to write lyrics for a melody with same note repeating. And this song solves it with using the same word "愛" (love). Also when Rozette sings the melody with made up english lyrics in the video demonstrating her point, it reminds me of 2000s RnB riffs, further supporting the point. On the "macho" thing, I think it is true that we glorify male singers with deeper, thicker voices. And i believe part of it is a cultural preference as pointed out in the video. As for the past 20+ years, a majority of the canto pop songs for male singers have themes surrounding unrequited love and love-hurts, the deeper voice seems to be favoured under this narrative. As a person from HK, it is also very joyful and inspiring to see people from other culture be excited and interested in our culture, while providing new perspective onto ourselves as well. Thank you for the video!

First time listen to this song. I really like the original arrangement and the "love" part sounds better in the original. edit: after listening to the CD version, I realized how MC did the "love" parts is like in the CD. In this case I like the Hins' concert version. I like how he didn't fully repeat all of the "love" words in the same way.
Hins has a new version of this song in last week's concert in Las Vegas

The original of this song has a lot more rifts. Because he sang it for hundreds of times, he changed it completely for this concert version 😅

Okay, I understand what she meant by the staccato way of singing. So yes MC makes it flow more and Hins makes it more staccato probably to a western ears. However, we like the way ppl sing in that "staccato" way bc we can understand the words better in Cantonese. It's usually call "lazy tone" if we hear a person not pronouncing the words properly in Cantonese. I think it would be interesting to show the vocal coach older cantonese songs from the 80s/90s to see if she still thinks it's staccato. Bc I think in recent years, many lyricist tend to put a lot of words in a song. For example, in Kay Tse's song "鍾無艷" each note is a word and I'll probably be out of breathe singing it. And I think the amount of words also contribute to that 'staccato' feeling.

The thick tone date back to origin of canto pop, it starts around 70s and very interesting fact in Hong Kong (where canto pop mostly originated) the singers background mostly comes from cover songs in both English (Beatles etc) and Cantonese opera Tv shows pre 70s are mostly musical And 70 economic boom in hk drives entertainment industry and popular tv show will hire composer for the show/soaps And the composers are mostly classical trained (one big gun Joseph Koo from Berklee), thus the preference towards theatrical tones Hins is mostly 2nd/3rd generation of canto pop artists and MC is modern in trend, and the song they performed is written 20 years ago
