People have been asking me to do reaction videos for a really long time. This was requested by people in the comments of the Nightwish - Yours Is An Empty Hope video that I reacted to. It was really cool to revisit Nightwish, thanks for the suggestion! How insanely talented is Floor Jansen and the rest of Nightwish - WOW! In my last couple videos people have been asking for more analysis, so I tried to more analysis throughout and a bit at the end. #VoiceTeacherReacts #VocalCoachReacts

Enjoyed your reaction. Even more impressive is the fact that 1) this was the 13th song in a 15 song setlist. 2) Floor was not even a full member of the band at the time. She had joined the band 10 months earlier, when their previous singer parted ways with the band midway through the American leg of a World Tour. Floor was asked to take over and had to learn the songs in 48 hrs before appearing in her first show with Nightwish in Seattle. Then she had to perfect everything while still touring. So how she managed to be so perfect in this show in just 10 months is staggering! Needless to say she was asked to become a full member of Nightwish shortly after this show!

@@BillyGollnerMusic Oh wow....everything? Their catalogue is beyond amazing, and Floor is their third singer. Personally, i think it's worth checking out Tarja (pronounced Tarya), and Annette, to get an idea of their evolution. For Tarja, Wishmaster (live). For Annette, Amaranth. Then dive into the rest of the live with Floor. You'll see how she's the best of both previous singers. Storytime (live), Romanticide (live) which gives you more of Marco (bass player), Song of Myself (live). When you've gotten a bit used to their history and styles, then you can do the second of the big 3, The Poet and the Pendulum (live at Wembley). It deals with the departure of Tarja from the band and the pain that Tuomas (keyboarder and main composer) felt in the aftermath. Finally, the climax is the third of the big 3, The Greatest Show on Earth (live at Tampere), which celebrates the evolution of the universe and is based on Richard Dawkins' book of the same name.

Floor says that she's a vocal technique nerd. I recently found out that she's Sensitive to Emotion and sometimes with that she get really down. That's why she brings people to tears I think 1 of the reasons she had her burnout. That's why she needs the country to relax. If the person watching doesn't like kids or animals interrupting they don't have to watch.This is Floor's favorite song There is a video called Learn the Setlist in 48 hrs. That is how long Floor had to learn the set list before her first time singing with Nightwish .

I think part of the reason for her burn-out was not really having much of a career in spite of her talents and hard work. I've been a fan of Floor since 2002, but hardly anyone seemed to know who she was for years as her previous bands never got super famous. Thankfully, Nightwish boosted her career and put her on the throne she deserves. ❤️

Here are some suggestions for the next stops of you Nightwish journey: -> There are a couple of great songs from Wacken: „Story Time“ and "Ever Dream" are catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones. -> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-) -> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional) -> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, … One of my personal absolute favorites of this band! -> Elvenjig / Elvenpath (Buenos Aires): Awesome intro and it continues on that level -> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is one of the two most epic songs. The title is not about the gig, but about the topic of the song: The evolution of mankind. -> "The Poet and the Pendulum“ (Wembley) is my personal absolute masterpiece of Nightwish. Be sure to know the background of this song ahead: Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time. As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears.

This was fun reaction. If you want to be even more amazed, Floor has further developed her ability to switch between vocal productions in the years since this performance and she can now modify her vocal production at will from note to note, such that instead of doing entire lines or sections in one vocal production and switch to a fully distinct one, she now can just float and weave between vocal productions at will. If you ever do a reaction to Nightwish - Dead Boy's Poem - Live from Buenos Aires you'll get to see her tone quality slowly and subtly shift throughout the course of the song with no clear breaks between tone qualities. It's really unique.

Good reaction, thank youI guess you can see now, why we wanted you to see this. Ghost Love Score was not originally written for Floor, but when she started performing it, she did it in her own unique way and re-wrote the ending to match her vocal capabilities. It is the most approachable song of the Nightwish Big-3. The two other ones are even longer and require a bit of research into the background story. When you feel like another Nightwish mini-symphony, check out The Greatest Show on Earth for a 20-minute story of life and evolution on Earth. Shorter songs to check out would include Storytime, Romanticide, Ever Dream and Song of Myself. Official Live versions are the best ones.

And I like the point you made about their connection with the audience. That 10-minute piece seemed like only 2 or 3 minutes, because I could’ve watched them play for hours! Anyway, thanks BG. Very clear analyzis of Floor's tecniques, amazing versatility, it looks and sounds so easy for her. Tuomas' compositions give her the possibility to shine. Her first concerts with Nightwish were not perfect of course given the circumstances someone already told you about, but after 3 months with Nightwish in Buenos Aires December 2012 she was already amazingly good. Tuomas' smile during Ghost Love Score (GLS) told everything. He was not going to let her go. He has said Floor is (the 3rd and) the last Nightwish female lead vocalist. The audiences loved her from the start. Her 80% is better than most singers 100%. In her 1st concert in Seattle she right away admitted to the audience she was not exactly sure what she was doing. 3,5 years later when they returned to Seattle she told the audience the last time she almost shit her pants, her actual words! And thanked the crowd for support 3,5 years ago. She also thanked the Nightwish guys for the best 3,5 years of her life. Hi from Helsinki Finland!

@Idefixu
@Idefixu 4 жыл бұрын
@@dariauniverse9166 The basic idea of Tuomas is that Nightwish is a symphonic metal band with a FEMALE lead vocalist. So I think Nightwish always needs to have a female singer. Marko can not sing Ghost Love Score for example. But I don't even want to think about the possibility that Floor or Marko would leave Nightwish for whatever reason. They sound so good together. They can have soloprojects and still be members of Nightwish.

Thanks for the reaction! If you want to listen more from Nightwish, always choose the live versions. Wacken open air, Argentina, WembleyThey are a live band and so much better than studio versions. The keyboard player Tuomas, is the composer of the songs and he is a genius, Some songs are longer, they have songs who are 25 minutes. Nightwish was originally a compleet Finnish band, but they now have also Troy (Ireland) who plays the backpipes, flutes, guitar and sings and of course singer Floor JAnsen (short a) from the Netherlands. Tuomas, the composer, has written music for the London symphonic orchestra, recorded it and they use that often in the background. They are great. Ever saw a duel between a backpipe and electric guitar? It is magical. The lyrics are extremely important with Nightwish. I would recommend reading the lyrics before listening, because it is poetry and has always a deep meaning. Glad you liked it. Everybody who hears Nightwish for the first time is flabbergasted and when they hear Floor sing from head-chest-belt-rocky-growl voice and how fast and seamless she can sing that....she is one of a kind. She went to the conservatorium to study classical vocals and she finished the Rock Academy. She sings opera, rock, Latin, but most of all METAL! :)

WELCOME TO THE PHENOMENON THAT IS THE GENRE OF SYMPHONIC METAL. This was the Wacken Open Air Festival Concert back in 2013, and there were over 82,000 people at this concert. Nightwish is a Symphonic Metal Band, and a majority of the band members are from Finland. The current Lead Singer is from the Netherlands, and the woodwinds player is from England. THE BAND IS NOT NEW. They released their first album in 1996. SO WHAT STYLE OF MUSIC ACTUALLY IS NIGHTWISH???? Nightwish is actually one of the groups credited with the CREATION of the Metal Sub-genre of Symphonic Metal (according to Wikipedia!). Symphonic Metal in general only borrows the hard driving double kick drums, and the hard grungy style guitars and bass from Metal. However, in SYMPHONIC METAL the guitar is not the primary focal point, it is in fact the keyboards and their movie-scorish sounding orchestral sound. The keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen (first name pronounced as Too-oh-mas) is the composer of all of the music arrangements and is the leader of the group. He is a personal huge lover of movie scores, which is where a lot of the movie-scorish style sound of the keyboards comes from (which is the primary focal point of ALL of Nightwish’s music instrumentally). In Symphonic Metal 90-95% of all Symphonic Metal bands are all female fronted. Currently only Kamelot, Serenity, and a hand full of other Symphonic Metal bands even have male singers, and they are normally referred to as Symphonic Power Metal. The female fronted bands are the ones usually referred to over in Europe as ‘Symphonic Metal’. The most popular being Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, and Delain. When Symphonic Metal first started the female singers ALL used an operatic style of singing, but as the Genre has evolved over the last 20+ years in the UK since Nightwish came long when they released their FIRST album back in 1996, they have adopted more of a contemporary style of singing like Floor uses currently. Floor Jansen is the current Lead Singer (and Nightwish third singer since 1996) who you see in this Concert and she is from the Netherlands. Keep in mind when Floor did this concert (Wacken Open Air in 2013), she had not been with Nightwish for very long, she was actually a FILL-IN for this particular tour. Nightwish was in the middle of the Imaginearum World Tour when they parted ways with their SECOND Lead Singer Anette Olzen (from Sweden), and Tuomas (pronounced as Too-oh-mas) called Floor and asked her if she could learn their entire set list in 48 hours and then fill-in for them for the rest of the tour. Within the NEXT THIRTY DAYS, the band posted their first Official Live Performance video since they fired their first lead singer Tarja Turunen at the end of November 2005. During Anette's entire tenure with the band, Nightwish did not post ONE single solitary live performance video on their official KZbin channel. Hmmm? Curious? At the end of this Imaginearum World Tour (just a few months later!), around Christmas time (As Floor tells the story in an interview) the Band pulled both Floor Jansen and Troy Donokley aside and asked them to be official members of the band. Floor said both her and Troy both had tears in their eyes. Troy had been a guest musician with the band on such official videos like The Islander, but never an official member of the band. The rest as they say ... is history. CURRENT BAND MEMBERS • Tuomas Holopainen - keyboards, piano, is the primary musical composer for all arrangements Is also who formed the band, and is the leader of the group. • Emppu Vuorinen - All guitars (been with the band since its inception) • Marco Hietala - bass, male vocals, acoustic guitar (is Nightwish Second Bass player, and has been with them since 2001.) • Troy Donockley - uilleann pipes, tin whistle, low whistle, guitars, bouzouki, bodhrán, backing vocals • Floor Jansen - lead vocals (Floor is Nightwish current and THIRD Lead Singer) • Kai Hahto - drums (NOT APART OF THE BAND YET WHEN THIS CONCERT WAS FILMED - Kai was hand picked by the groups original drummer Jukka Nevalainen to replace him when he had to stepped down for medical reasons listed below. Kai is a personal friend of Jukka’s) FORMER BAND MEMBERS SEEN IN THIS CONCERT AT THE WACKEN OPEN AIR FESTIVAL FROM THE YEAR 2013: • Jukka Nevalainen - drums ( original drummer from 1997-2014 and is who you see playing drums in this concert at the Wacken Open Air Festioval Show from 2013. He had to step down for severe medial reasons, and handpicked his replacement. Jukka nearly died from a period of 2 straight years of severe insomnia, and had to be hospitalized because of it. Even though he stepped down as drummer, according to Toumas, he is the Bands MANAGER now. That is awesome I think. So he is still very much a part of Nightwish.) Other Former Band Members NOT seen in this video: • Sami Vänskä - bass (1998-2001) • Tarja Turunen - vocals (Nightwish FIRST Singer for the first 10 years of Nightwish existence from 1996-2005) • Anette Olzon - vocals (Nightwish SECOND singer, from Sweden, from 2007-2012) The songs that I recommend you listen to from this list are ALL from the Wembley Arena LIVE Show which is from the Vehicle of Spirit DVD/Blu-ray in 2016: 1. Poet And The Pendulum - This is one of the corner stone songs for this band. I would RESEARCH THIS SONG BEFORE REACTING TO IT. As stated above Floor Jansen is their THIRD Singer. Their first singer sang entirely in the operatic syle and was named Tarja Turunen. She was Nightwish Singer for TEN YEARS. Her last concert was THE END OF AN ERA concert filmed the end of November of 2005. She received a letter called "The Open Letter" from the band at the end of that concert telling her they were parting ways with her. Poet And the Pendulum is about the emotional heart wrenching experience of events that lead up to that decision, and the backlash from fans after ward. SO this song is INTENSELY emotional. I would build up to this one a bit. 2. GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH - This song is about the creation of the universe, and evolution. BUT BE PREPARED because this is a 20 minute rollarcoaster ride that ONLY feels like its 3 or 4 minutes long!! I would choose the one from Tampere Finland Show, and look for a video with both Lyrics and FIREWORKS. I would build up to this one. 3. Ever Dream - This is the best song to be introduced to Nightwish with, and I would absolutely do it from the Wacken Open Air Festival in 2013 or from Wembley Arena in 2015. 4. Nemo - (Nemo is from a Latin word which means no one or nobody. It is about a time in Toumas life when he felt his direction in life was aimless, and without real direction. It’s an awesome song and a HUGE favorite of long time fans. This song was originally written during the Tarja Era). 5. Alpenglow - (this is JUST a feel good song. And again, this was such a fun song in the Wembley Arena Show). 6. Shudder before the beautiful - (Also from the Wembley Arena Show which is from the Vehicle of Spirit Live DVD. Be prepared because this the first song of that show, and it is a really high energy song.) 7. Stargazers - (this one is an old Tarja Era song, and is sung almost entirely in an Operatic style, so if you wanna hear Floor sing Opera in a Metal song, this is the one to listen to. Be sure to note there is a lot of Floor talking to the crowd in the beginning of this video, so the song usually starts about 2:20 into the video, unless you get someone who has a version with the talking cut out in the beginning). 8. Weak Fantasy - Another great one from the Wembley Arena show. 9. Romanticide - This is one kick ass song, and I would do it from this Wacken Open Air Festival in 2013. 10. I Want My Tears Back - (This song has a few versions I recommend from either Wacken Open Air in 2013 or Wembley Arena because it is by far the best performance. This is just one hell of a fun party dancing song and watching Floor on stage dancing during the song is awesome. This also gets to show off a bit of Troy Donokley the woodwinds player member of the band and just how MANY different instruiments he can play during a show). 11. One other song from the Tarja era I would really like to see someone react to is CREEK MARY"S BLOOD. The song is from the END OF AN ERA Concert and features the guest appearance of Native American John Two-Hawks in which he sings with Tarja, and plays a Native American Flute. It is absolutely one of THE most unique songs I have ever heard. I can honestly say I have never heard a Native American incorporated into Metal, but of course its going to be with Nighwish, who does it, and does spectacularly well. Be ready, because you WILL be shocked, amazed, and floored to say the least. This is an EXTREMELY Powerful Balad. Here is a link : kzbin.info/www/bejne/pae9qZRtgL6Fq5I 12. If you want a song which features Marcos voice (the viking looking bass player) who is the bass player of Nightwish then I recommend THE ISLANDER. I would personally rather see you react to BOTH the official studio video first AND then the live version from Tampere Findland off of the Vehicled of Spirit DVD/Bluray.

Hi Billy, "Yours is an empty hope" was your introduction! You got the unusual groove at the beginning, love the changes in tempo. I was swaying with you. The special blend of Nightwish, not stuck in one genre. "Technician!" Absolutely, with twenty years of experience, always exploring. So many different voices, each matching the mood of the song part, awesome. I think you are captivated? There is a nice story about this particular concert, it certainly is special. Each band member was on top form, and look so happy. The connection with the crowd. "Ordering a side of fries"! Hahaha! What happened to the audio in the last few seconds? Wondered what the banging and shuffling was, I thought it was a domestic cleaner, unaware that you were recording! "Hello Headbanging Tortoise!".

great reaction. this hits us the same way, lol. I'd highly recommend both Ever Dream and Storytime be put on your short list, both from this same show. Both are great Nightwish classics that Floor knocks out of the park, both are rockers... but with a listener-friendly pop sensibility. Storytime shows more of her range and control, Ever Dream more of her power and vocal strength. After those, if you wish to keep going deeper down this rabbit hole, Song of Myself (also from this show), and Romanticide. Two more Nightwish classics. Once those are under your belt... it might be time to go after the epics... Poet and the Pendulum live from Wembley, and then The Greatest Show On Earth live from Tampere. Ghost Love Score is a good first step into what Nightwish is capable of creating, but Poet and Greatest are even more epic. I would suggest, as many before me have mentioned to other reactors, you might want to investigate Poet and Greatest before listening. They both tell a story, both are multi-act, and a lot easier to follow/ understand with some pre-listening homework. thank you for sharing your Nightwish journey with us all!

I would love it if you reacted to JP Leppäluoto. He's a singer from Finland (and is good friends with Marco and Floor from Nightwish as well). He's a baritone, and his tone is really unique. He can also go from singing at the low end of his range to the high end, as well as from singing lower distorted notes to higher clean notes, in the space of a second. It's amazing. The best quality professional live video I think I've seen is him performing a cover of a popular Finnish song called "Mombasa" (The video is under the name Raskasta Iskelmää, but it's easy to find). As for his own music, the song "Colder" by his first band Charon or his first solo song "Kuoppa" would be good choices.

@@BillyGollnerMusic 😊 "Mombasa" might seem like a bit of a slow or "boring" one to some, since he kind of holds his voice back until the very end, but I still really enjoy it. Oh, another good one is a song called "I Once Had Wings", which he sings with a band called Dark Sarah. But no full video of that song being performed live exists on KZbin, so if you go with that one then either the audio track or a fan-made lyric video would be your best bet.
