Late to the party, but, to my shame I just recently discovered this group . Beside their amazing musical talents, let's take our hats off for their theatrical characterisations - there are some serious acting chops there. They are one extraordinary, breathtaking package .

You should definitely check out more Voiceplay. "Hoist the Colors", "If I Were A Rich Man/Girl", "Moana Medley", to name just a few. Oh! I almost forgot! "Just Sing", which is a HUGE collaboration with MANY other a capella artists. If/when you do that one, be sure to turn on the captions. They included information about who everyone is, as well as a few snarky remarks.

Guess what the BEST part of this is? This is an 'older' song and there has been enough time between then and now that they have all improved. Geoff's voice has reached lower lows. He's an actual quakemaster. :)

Being a 5 octave singer makes those 'belt for Jesus' bits really special. His final note here is not as low as he can go. Geoff has been working on his chest voice and can now do many first octave notes as chest notes not subharmonics. Listen to Geoff's single Shenandoah. It really is like different people singing.
@artv4nd3l4y Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think I learned the most from Geoff and that is saying a lot. Like she said in the other video of Sixteen Tons, his control is so spot on it's just so rare for a bass. Thurl is the only other bass singer I can think of that was so musical with their voice, of course that is one of Geoff's biggest inspirations.

Geoff’s lowest (so far) recorded chest note is F1; from E1 down to B0 is all subs.

Geoff’s lowest recorded note is a B0 in Halo Theme. I agree with the previous suggestions: Hoist the Colours, If I Were a Rich Man/Girl, and the latest, The Dragonborn Comes-you’re going to love them. Be aware, too, that Geoff and Layne (the beatboxer) trade off doing the arrangements-both of them are fabulous. Eli (ELee), the group’s tenor, does most of their lighting and effects, and he’s also really skilled at that. You can’t go wrong with Voiceplay. Great reaction! Once you hear a song where they’re not doing character voices, I think you might also be pretty impressed by Eli and their newest member, Cesar as well as Geoff. (Past members of the group also had some pretty awesome voices.). We don’t get to hear Layne sing much, but when he does, that’s also a treat.

@eolsunder Жыл бұрын
yep and even if you aren't a singer its still great to watch his videos he gives a lot of knowledge on his techniques and you learn a lot about singing. He talks about training his low growl from Tim from Home Free who he first heard doing it and wanted to learn to do it to make his low notes better. How it takes years of practice to even start to fine tune your voice to hit the notes you want, and that after years he still doesn't have it all the way yet.

Disney medleys of Moana and Little Mermaid Geoff solo stuff of Blackbird, Bear Necessities, You already did 16 tons and Misty Mountain. @andrewmcfarlane70152 жыл бұрын
Seconded (and thirded too!!) Tim is incredible
@friedemannkemm632 жыл бұрын
He hits that low note by subharmonic singing, a technique that creates the octave below the actually sung note or even lower notes in the same intervals as the overtone series, but downwards. It is somehow like dividing songs into measures: besides the quarter notes, you hear something with a lower "frequency". For other techniques in low notes, you might go to Tim Foust of Home Free (growl) or Elliott Robinson (full chest). Elliott's work can be found on his own channel (Elliott Michael) or at Axiom Vocal. There are also some collabs with Chris Rupp, founder of Home Free.

Kudos on choosing Voiceplay, this is an especially fun one. Should you wish to vault to the very top of performers in terms of dynamics I’d like to recommend a singer named Floor Jansen. She has plenty of solo work and currently fronts for the band Nightwish. A typical intro to the band is the song “Ghost Love Score” official live version. Floor has done many covers during the lockdown, I am a fan of her Adagio as well as Oblivion though she has many others like the popular Lady Gaga song “Shallow” if you prefer more familiar tracks. You will be properly astonished I think as she is the penultimate storyteller as singers go with a three octave range and training from classical to theater while she is predominantly a metal performer historically. She uses every discipline often within the same song and her versatility as a soprano is unparalleled and very emotion provoking. Such a presence as well! I hope you will embrace this possibility as her gifts are hard earned and well worth your time.

Nice, another vocal coach getting blown away by Voiceplay :-) In addition to the suggestions already made, you *must* check out Geoff's covers of "16 Tons", "The Headless Horseman" and "Far Away". Also, two minor observations: if you listen to this song using headphones, there's a mean panorama effect on the "I'm drowning in my tears" line not quite carried across by speakers. And, like many, you seem to have missed the otherworldly riff Geoff does after "to add a little spice". IMO that alone is worth listening to the song. Anyway, nice vid, do keep 'em coming.

Anything Home Free does is well worth listening to. Off topic, I said in a comment on another of your videos that I was going to do it. Omar Cardona has been joining them frequently and may become the next permanent group member

HIGHLY recommend Voiceplay doing "Carry on my wayward son". You'll get the whole group and it's now my favorite version of that song. Also, some Home Free (the two groups a good friends). Good place to start with Home Free is "Man of constant sorrow" or "Ring of fire" (either one, the one from the sing off or the one they did with Avi).
