Excellent breakdown! Yes, they have re-defined what a capella music is capable of earning 3 Grammys along the way! Kevin, the beatboxer, is actually a tenor, so 3 of them can sing high.(Mary Did You Know) Scott took over the baseline when Avi was singing. His range is wide (Sound of Silence) Mitch & Kirstin have beautiful, full sounding lower registers (Rather Be, Amazing Grace, Mad World). They did a stunning job with a few Broadway numbers on their last Christmas Album. (We Need a Little Christmas Now, My Favorite Things, Once Upon a December,) Also their arranging skills are on display with their Evolution of …. Music, Michael Jackson, 90s Dance…..Medleys!! Looking forward to more!

Andreas, I congratulate you for your superb reaction to Pentatonix and other musicians. I have watched many reactions to this group and this song, but I much prefer your insightful, concise, and appropriately timed comments. I like that you allowed them to finish each passage before adding your comments. You don't interrupt, you merely pause the music. Then you reveal the essential features of each singer and show how their unique sounds add variety and texture while still blending into one cohesive unit. I had watched a few of your reactions to Marcelito and Dimash earlier but neglected to subscribe. I closed that loop moments ago. I look forward to improving my education through your efforts. I enjoyed hearing your review of the four music parts, as well as the vocal placements, breath controls, and styles of the individuals. I totally agree that the percussions from Kevin such as his beat, vocal sounds, stomps,were what carried the musical sounds in the soft non-voice humming parts. Then one could hear Kevin's artistry which became.... the music. They are all so talented yet Kevin has the ear, and ability to be the 'musical instrument'.He does this with his vocal sounds, beats, stomps, breath, percussions, and sounds of strings, winds echoes, etc. He has a rich voice also.That takes a special artistry of internal music and beats. There are no empty spots in the song. He and his body are the instruments. I had a vision of a 150 year old Grandfather clock with the Westminster Chime. It was finely tuned, in rhythm, perfect sound, beats were balanced and running in synch together, yet apart in their individual roadways. Even still they are fine tuned and pitch perfect. I don't know if I'm truly making my point. Your review and teaching was so helpful. I was introduced to them years ago when they were first together. I've sung since 5 years of age. My Mom's large family were all singers and played instruments. I also have been involved in theater arts with my late husband, and Acapella chorus and quartets. PTX were wonderful, right out of the gate. There has been such an enormous growth as a group and individuaI singers. I will look for your next reviews, and other genres as well. You were a pleasure. I'm a fan.

I agree with everyone here who has said that the way you did your reaction to this song in breaking it down and using the clips to explain and show exactly what you were talking about during certain parts was great, I really enjoyed that as well! I wonder if you could tell me, should you see the comment I know this video is a week or so old now, but if you do see it, who was that in the clip that you showed singing when you were talking about Mitch and how he is sometimes classified as a counter tenor and you were talking more about how his voice is less breathy and more strong and all that and you showed that clip of what I believed to be an opera singer maybe singing in that counter tenor range and I wondered who that was, he is incredible and I'd like to look up something else by him. Just subscribed! I liked how you stopped the video at the end of each stanza and discussed each singer’s voice and performance as well as the way the group’s background vocals were supporting the soloist. In terms of Acapella groups, please consider Home Free - I think they are equal to Pentatonix. Avi Kaplan was featured in their Ring of Fire video and many people start with that but I favor Man of Constant Sorrow which was my gateway drug. They have some very fun Quarantine videos (“Quarantine,” “Meet in the Middle” “Honkey Tonk something” I forget). And a wonderful collaboration with Peter Hollen “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” They’ve done some adorable collaborations with older groups (Oak Ridge Boys, Don McLean). Just don’t watch the MayDay video until you are more familiar with the band and the members. I don’t want to spoil the surprise.

I am now subscribed. I learned stuff: Music I know - I played bass and contrabass clarinet in our symphonic band, but the difference in the range of human voices and how to listen is fascinating. Thank you so much. You can do as much Pentatonix as you like, I won't mind. They are so good. My other acapella group that I can't live without is VoicePlay. Try Hoist the Colors, My Mother Told Me, Oogie Boogie's Song, The Man in the Mirror, Halo and their newest song is Dragonborn. Their bass Geoff Castelucci was singing Monster Mash in October which is what introduced my eventually onto VoicePlay and Pentatonix. He also has done Blackbird, Far Over the Misty Mountains, Sixteen Tons, Shenandoah. None of these will disappoint.

@@andreasgrussl When Avi left PTX in 2017 he was struggling with depression. His mother was ill with cancer and he really was/is a gentle soul & yearned for his forests where he grew up. He began to write about this in many of his new songs. The first one he did solo was 'Quarter Past Four' but his biggest solo work was "Change on The Rise' it was his battle song. Avi did it A Capella with his voice layered He said he did use an organ in one part but apart from the clapping it's all him. Brilliant cinematography too. 'Chains' was another song showing his struggle but he always gives one hope. I found them very cathartic. Here is a link to 'Change on the Rise' kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWmVc4eugbOlpdk also here is another link to a 'live stream' concert he did when Covid hit the world. As a counter tenor, I love that you showed an example of the color difference of a high tenor and a counter tenor. Whether you meant to or not, you demonstrated why altos hate singing next to a counter tenor. Altos have a full, rich tone, while we have a thinner, tinnier tone. Every alto and soprano I’ve sang next to tells me to darken the tone and I do, so they are happy. Then my vocal coach is yelling, “What are you doing!?” Can’t win for loosing, I guess. 😊
@andreasgrussl2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! As a counter tenor you are using a very different sound strategy than most altos would or in fact should. That starts at the vocal fold level and then continues in the vocal tract. As long as you push the right overtones you will be heard well and sound great, even if some altos don't like it 😂

Thank you for your insightful reaction- I loved the cover. I would be interested in your reaction to Sissel singing Dido’s Lament. She has such beautiful tone and the aria is one of my favorites.

Am I right, that in the last two major chorus sections (high-intensity, they go two times), in the first part Scott kinda goes out of the group with his singing, adding something interesting with his "lujaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh" - and then in the second part they immediately close up and it sounds like it's one voice together? Those two parts definitely have a different feeling, the second one they "snap" together like magnets, it's incredible how they can do it just like that. *snip*

Just came from the sound of silence video and wow you are amazing on every video!! If you really want to see a demonstration of a "full" voice another great example would be Johny Cash "Hurt" an emotional piece with a stunning arrangement- sure to leave goosebumps!

You need to know that Mitch is an authentic countertenor and Avi is a basso profundo ( he is capable of a 3rd ledger-line bass clef F#!) That’s contra bass territory! I love the last chord anchored with that 3rd ledger-space Bb! The overtones just rain down! I actually prefer the 2016 live version on their Christmas special in 2016! It’s worth hearing.

Agree about Kirstin and Mitch. A couple of years ago I heard a classical vocal coach say something like "There are just a handful of true contra tenors in the world and Mitch Grassi is as good as any of them." I'd like to find that again. Kirstin can go low.
@andreasgrussl3 жыл бұрын
That sounds interesting. I definitely have to check out more of her low range.
