Mitch (the fourth soloist) is what is called a countertenor in the classical music world. That is, he’s a man with a female soprano range. It’s truly beautiful and completely insane how high this beautiful man can go

@yaimavol He was in the Sing-Off. The producers were uncomfortable with his gayness and his high voice. He had also been teased throughout school about his high voice, so he was very shy when the Sing-Off started. He had just graduated high school. In fact, he missed his graduation to be on the Sing-Off. But by the end of the show, he had really come into his own, although not anywhere near where he has reached today. I think it was in the twelfth performance where he really had a chance to shine. kzbin.info/www/bejne/inK7Y3dra7GahZI

Mitch has the angelic voice. Your reaction to Mitch's voice is called the "Mitch Slap"--you've been inducted. In their cover of "The Prayer" he sings Celine Dion's part and his voice is even more angelic. Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Daft Punk, all of the evolution of series, especially evolution of Michael Jackson, Shallow, Say something, their original "Sing" and many more. You can't go wrong with any original or cover. Pentaholics (PTX fans) call them upgrades vs covers. Kevin is the beat boxer. He does all of the percussion (drums, symbols, etc...) with his mouth. He also plays the cello in some of the videos. You ask if that's legal, we say yes. This group is so amazing, they can probably make the sounds better with their mouths. Check out their original "Coffee in Bed." Kevin is amazing. Later down the road, check out Super Fruit. Mitch and Scott (first singer in Hallelujah) formed an off-shoot from Pentatonix. Check out their cover of "Rise" and "The Promise." That should keep you busy. Enjoyed your reaction. Liked and sub'd.

On the question "is that allowed in acapella"? Pentatonix is a musical group, their goal is to produce the greatest performances that they achieve. "Acapella" is the type of music that they are most known for, but that is not all that they are. Kevin Olusola is the "beatboxer", but he also plays cello in many of their performances. That is another type of music which they produce and is not in violation of any "acapella" rule or regulation.

Kevin can do a powerful bass kick with his mouth. In cases where more complex percussion is needed, he will beatbox and have a stomp pad for the bass kick. More often than not it is his mouth. Also, sometime Kevin’s bass kick is backed up by Avi’s (the bass singer in this video) to make a more resonant sound hard to distinguish as 2 voices.

Great reaction. Also, classic reaction to Mitch’s amazing gift. We call your surprise to his voice the “Mitch-slap”. 😀 Anything you choose next will be great, esp Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Sound of Silence, Daft Punk. But my fave which not too many talk about is Dog Days are Over from their Sing-off competition. Listen for Avi’s “throat-singing” in the beginning, Mitch’s breath-taking solo, Kevin’s relentless percussion/beatboxing, Kirsty’s lyrical support throughout and above all Scott’s tireless energy singing lead. He really takes you on a ride and leave you spent at the end. Unbelievable performance. Wish they would do it again!

They are all amazing singers, including Kevin Olusola, the beat boxer. He just doesn’t sing often. Avi, the guy in the beanie, left the group in 2017 for personal reasons, and Matt Salee, the current bass joined the group. He is also amazing. They have over 200 songs in their catalogue. You must go down the ptx rabbit hole. Their fans, Pentaholics, will follow. Loved the reaction. Keep them coming. Bohemian Rhapsody is great, Imagine, by John Lennon. Kevin, the beatboxer is not a bass, his vocal skills are tenor. The bass is as I said, the Great Basso Profundo, Avi Kaplan. Kevin Olusola, the beatboxer, is a Yale graduate. He was headed to Medical School. His plan was to be a Medical Dr. in China. He is fluent in Mandarin and a few other languages. Like Avi, his plans changed when Scott Hoying found him on youtube and managed to get his phone number at Yale. It was just a sing off and I think he thought he would continue with his plans when the group was eliminated, but that did not happen and now all of them a multi-millionaires. Avi was the only one who left the group and he is the one who suggested that PTX bring in Matt to take his place.

Hey Pam, sorta surprised to see you here, since we're both Dears, but Pentatonix is so great, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. After discovering Dimash, he pretty much ruined me for most other singers, but PTX is an exception to that. They are just excellent and one-of-a-kind. I love their performances. If you had a similar experience to mine after hearing Dimash, who else do you still listen to? For me, Diana and Angela were interesting at first because they were both also unique, but at least for me, they now tend to sound repetitive. Do you have any other singers or groups you'd recommend?

The amazing bass you're hearing is the group bass singer, whom is Avi Kaplan in the video (he left the group for a family emergency). He really sings that crazy low. He's the bearded guy with the beanie. The blonde guy (Scott) picks up the bass when Avi had his solo. Scott has an amazing range so he can pick up but the severe highs that a tenor can reach.

Others have made excellent recommendations. I want to make a different one: Pentatonix singing 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy', which as you know is a Christmas song. What is unique is that it is an instrumental song, there are no words in the song. None. Yet Pentatonix does an amazing version of it. And they won a Grammy award for it. Let that sink in for a minute:. An a cappella group won a Grammy award for singing a instrumental song that has no words.

Research “beat boxer” Kevin was at the top of their list of results. That is how he joined the group. They got their start on the Sing Off, but found the rules required they have five members. That is how Avi and Kevin became part of the group. The deep bass you hear is Avi. He’s a basso profundo, considered a rare bass singer. He’s the second soloist in this song. Kirstin is a mezzo soprano, but Mitch frequently takes those parts. Your really should react to their version of The Prayer.

I'm sure this has already been said but: Verse 1 - Scott Hoying, Baritone and covers baseline when Avi has a solo. Verse 2 - Avi Kaplan, Bass and beloved member of PTX. He left the group amicably in 2017 and was replaced with Matt Sallee. Verse 3 - Kirstie Maldonado, Mezzo-Soprano Verse 4 - Mitch Grassi, Countertenor, has been called a once in a generation talent. Whole song - Kevin Olusola, beatboxer and percussion. Also sings, speaks a myriad of different languages and plays the cello. Dude is a beast. PTX is 100% acapella. They never create anything in studio that they can't recreate in a live performance. For recommendations, check out the following: Daft Punk Medley Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy Any of their Medley videos Gold The Prayer Run to You Aha - live in Singapore at the Star Vista Really, anything. Keep in mind, they aren't the only awesome a capella group out there - there are a few, every one of them incredible in their own rights, and interpretations You will find fans for each of the groups will insist their favourite is best - my favourite is the the beautiful music. I say this in contrast to some of the reactors that just bounce around, blithering things and just have basically nothing to say except "WOW!" and "COOL!" and such. Plus, you don't interrupt a whole bunch of times, which I REALLY appreciate! I hate reactors that pause every 30 seconds just to repeat the same things they already said. You have a good amount to say when you DO pause, but your comments are well thought out and add to the video. It's much preferred over breaking the song up into little sound bites. As far as using "body Percussions", what most people don't realize is that the beatboxer actually makes the percussion sounds with his mouth and voice but adds the movements as a visual key to those watching. Consider the fact that in this video Kevin is patting his chest with leather gloves on and a leather trench coat as well as stomping his foot on the ground in the desert. It would be impossible to mic him for all those different sound dynamics. But further, you hear exactly the same sounds produced by him in the video where they perform this song live in their Christmas Concert but he is patting his bare hands on a fabric coat and stomping his foot on a stage floor. If you watch his mouth in the live recording you can see he is creating the different "body percussion" sounds with his mouth. Once I realized this I was even more impressed by his beatboxing skills. Everything they do is phenominal. BTW, keep up the fantastic reactions guys. You are Great.

not only that, but tapping their chest can make the vocal sound they are making with their mouth interrupt, it Is hard to explain bur I follow professional beatboxers that have tutorials on their KZbin on how the rythym can be altered by hitting their chest or tapping their throat.

I was blessed to see them live a few years ago. Simply amazing. It was an outdoor concert and a storm came up and they were told to get off the stage because of lightning. They were so apologetic and left the stage. As everyone started making their way to the exits they came back out and said they could not leave without at least singing Hallelujah for us. I read somewhere that Kevin, who does the beatboxing, uses his hands and feet to keep time, or 'play' each percussion instrument he is doing at that time. Each hand, each foot, is a different snare, cymbal, bass, woodblock, etc. In most of these groups practically everyone has picked up some beatboxing skills, in particular the bassists. The 'floor' that a good bassist and a good beatboxing percussionist can lay down to support the rest of the group can be amazing.

Kevin is probably one of the world’s best beatboxer. He also “celloboxes”, where he plays the cello while beatboxes. That’s actually how Scott (the blonde), Kirstie (rhymes with “thirsty”), and Mitch (guy in the hat) found Kevin- he was posting videos on KZbin. They met Avi (said like Ah- vee) through a friend, right before they competed on The Sing off. Avi (now Matt, the bass who took over Avi’s role), sings the bass notes or rhythms, Kevin does the percussion/drum sounds. Kirstie, Mitch, and Scott do solely vocals, but Scott takes over bass when the bassist is singing lead. Hope all of that made sense. Check out Amazing Grace or The Prayer. Both will give you goosebumps!

Yes, each member has a role, but they will often change up who takes on which role. Avi is the outstanding basso profundo voice you hear, but when he is singing lead, Scott, who is a baritone with a phenomenal range, will fill in the bass line. Likewise, Kevin is the primary beatboxer, but Avi will often work with him, jumping from bass line to percussion as needed. In fact, every member of the group has done some effects, as you can see in their Daft Punk medley... the only way for five voices to recreate an EDM sound! Please do more Pentatonix. I love your approach to reactions. Liked and subbed.

"If there were one thing we wish we could do, it would be to sing." Guys -- everyone can sing. Just not everyone can sing well -- yet. The fact is that anyone can sing well -- it just takes some effort. From listening to your speaking voices -- I honestly believe that you will be able to sing well -- if you try hard enough. The most difficult part will be in finding your natural range. Many times people will desire to sing well beyond that, and attempting to do so will actually end up shackling their true potential. once you do manage to find that range, learn how to embrace it, stay within it, and you will shine as a singer. Here's cheering you on.
